Congrats on the SPS. I'm on my second, a 2001. Great bikes and still turn heads 20 years later!
The 4th character in the VIN should be a 3.

Yes!
ZDM1........ means the bike was built on the assembly lines.
ZDM3......... means the race crew built it in the off season by hand.

Given that it’s a bike people research, look around. Could very well be that the year bike you have were all ZDM1. I know that I don’t know for sure about that year 996SPS.

nice find; yes cool bike;
What sort of performance difference is there between this and the s2r 1k's? just for fun; there both litre bikes …. with differences.
S2r 1k has just 95 hp with 99nm torque; 2 valves per-cylinder, beryllium valves and seats, with dual sparks per cylinder; an odd 992 cc's (where did the 4cc's go?); cylinder stud spacing is 996; with swing arm bearings in bearing in case' oil sumps not as deep; air cooled
; 395 lbs; Power-to-weight ratio: 0.35 HP/kg; (2.83 kg/HP) ; top speed 220 kmph … no ti conrods

If you’ve never ridden a Ducati superbike.
Go do that.
Then ride one that’s been slightly modified.
Then imagine even a more sublime riding experience coupled with GOBS more power... and then you’re close to the ballpark.
You know, Harley Sportsters used to be 1000cc’s, but I doubt anyone has compared them to a liter bike...

I'll spot him 76cc and say ride an S4 compared to S2R1k.
I'm not saying one is better than the other for the street (honestly both are bonkers) but they're definitely similar but not the same ride.
They've both got gobs of low end torque, the S2R has more or certainly feels like it's got more.
But the S4 engine just keeps going up and up and up after the S2R has run out of breath.
