Performance coil option for DS motors. A favour to ask.

I've been enquiring with Liam from FBG in NZ about a performance coil option for 1000/1100 DS motors.
In order to ascertain a suitable coil I have a favour to ask of anyone here who has a DS coil available to test.
1. Measure the resistance between the 2 plug connectors on one coil.
2. Measure the resistance between the two input connections on one coil.
Please post your results and I'll pass them on to find a range of suitable coils.
The oem coils aren't too bad but if one was to raise compression (like on the single spark Evo1100), then a stronger spark energy not split between plugs may be required to optimize the potential of such motors. This mod could also alleviate some bikes with hard starting issues and help those in places where the fuel is less volatile.

Yep. Thanks heaps. If soneone has a spare on the bench it will be even easier. There are YouTube videos as a guide too.
I forgot to do it when I had one in the workshop.
Appreciate it as it will inform us as to the appropriate performance coils on the market.

Measured battery, meter ok. Measured on my MTS.
1.Meter in 20k position, measured twice: 14,51 & 14,50.
2. No reading/numbers! Bit tricky behind steering but no result.

One on bench...
Primary = 0.8 ohm
Secondary = 15K ohm

Thanks fellas. Hope to identify a higher output coil.
Cheers

Hi,
I have a 2003 MTS1000DS with Pistal high comp etc, use Iridium DCR9EIX with 1mm gap and no additional earths. Do a lot of testing and mapping tweaks also refurb a few neglected a/c bike now and then especially over the lockdowns in UK, most of my tech posts are on Multistrada.net.
This is one of my motors for sale on here:

Is there some posts on here regarding the 1000DS you mention?

Do you mean this one?

Have a couple of customers with Multi 1100's and have another coming in soon for work. Noted that hard starting has been an issue (on various forums) and haven't seen a performance coil option. Followed the Multistrada site threads re hard starting and solutions. There is a good paper on ignition via Fastbikesgear, it's worth every cent.
Saw that motor for sale, looks very tidy.
If a high performance coil is available I'll post up its details.

Oh I see, various customer bikes. Yeah if most things aren't aligned....
Mentioning my bike just pointing out that they can be set-up to start ok but maybe this window is too narrow and would be interesting if a better coil widens the window!
I did some tests using separate power supplies for ecu and starter motor to see at what point the ecu stops driving the coils and that is at a definitive 8v whether plugs in or out, so the ecu shuts it off.
Here's some data from an 1100 back on one battery (showing 12.80v) using an oscilloscope as a meter isn't fast enough, where red is current clamp on the starter wire (scale wrong) just to show timing/work on compression and blue is the volts seen by the ecu. The bike starts but see how close it comes to the 8 volts cut off when working against compression.

That chart well explains the symptoms of an MTS1100 that had a faulty starter drawing too much from the battery. The poor old ECU couldn't think straight. New starter and the bike started in one or two cranks with minimal voltage drop.
Like many others I may run an extra earth cable to link each case "hemisphere" and through the lhs case into the starter body. The factory must have realised that a starter motor sealed with threebond and a paper gasket makes for good insulation! I note the revised gasket is now metal.
I'm hopeful a performance coil exists that doesn't halve the spark energy between plugs and actually fits. It would be great to have that option.

That 1100 ended up with new brushes and armature cleaned, mounted with dry bolts using star washers.
The current values are scaled wrong in the scope.
The 8v cut off is written into the hex on all 5AM, my own dips to just above 9v.
The Dwell correction table covers down to 7v.

What scope are you using Steve? I need a compact, portable device for on site use.

Sorry I don't get notifications...
The scope I used for that was a cheap as chips "Wave 2" comes in kit form if you like soldering practice, it's ok for catching battery volts, injector pules width, timing pulse the simple stuff.

Here catching pulse width on my injector tester:
Also have a Rigol a bit more trick...
