How do hospice workers do it?

I guess the patients aren't their friends, but seeing all the make the beast with two backsing death...has to take a toll.

I just need to figure out how to stop the tears.

I don't know. I'm sure there's a certain level of detachment.

When Cindy's dad died I spent some time talking with the hospice worker asking questions about how it all works, how long she thought he would stay alive etc.

I don't remember all the answers but it was clear to me she knew all the ins and outs because she'd done it a lot.

We got a card from them all after Sam had passed. It was then that I realized it wasn't all death for them. They also focus really hard on being there for the family. Helping, comforting etc.

It's not a job I could do.

It's no secret that I'm struggling with this.

I was taught that you needed to fix everything.

As I've grown older, I've learned that there's very little I can control. I'm not excited about this realization.

I can't fix Cory...I can't fix Zeke.

I'm a bastard with death.  I think I always have been.  It's a serious character flaw.  Or an asset.  I've never quite known which.  Please, when you go see Cory take him beer and call him a twat for terrorising the Cray fish (or whatever the make the beast with two backs the crustaceans were)  ;D

No beer for Cory. He just had a surgery, of some sort, and he's on morphine. Jeannie would kill me if I brought him a beer.

Sending my love to you and Cory, DP.  We fight death our entire life and then it comes rushing in. 

I saw my fair share in the ambulance and was able to hold a few hands as they took in their last breath. 

I often say "I can't wait" when the subject of death comes up. I'll wait, but it is truly our last great adventure.

I'm sorry, Nate. My thoughts to Cory, and hugs to Jeannie. I imagine it's rough on her.
If the state had not cut funding for the mental institutions, this project could never have happened.

It was kinda strange today...'specially when the social worker came by to drop off the court signed DNR paperwork. :'(

There were other visitors, but Jeannie got me a chair, and I sat across from Cory and we talked. I was a good boy, and held back my tears, until Cory started talking about Jeannie and he broke into tears about how lucky he was to have her. Yeah Dave...it has to be hard for her.

I feel bad for Cory's 90 something year old mom that will likely outlive her son.

I'm horrible at finding the best words in situations like this.  Just know that your grief is felt Nate and also to the others who know Cory.


And keeping in the theme of this thread - without DIMBY (& this forum), these friendship bonds never would have happened, thus we get the pain of loss when friendships end for whatever reason.

Very true. Honestly, I have developed a multitude of great friendships all because back in the early 2000's I bought a Ducati Monster 900 on eBay.

All roads lead to now.
