Parents can value their children's lives more than their own (we see it in the movies all the time...so it must be true ).

value is a relative term - depending on relationship between whomever you are asking and the valued person.

I think anyone can determine their own and other's values.

There is no right value though, it's all perspective that changes from one person to another.  There are only 2 ways to determine your value objectively after death.  If your religious then by god and if your atheist then by how many worms you feed.
