On further though, I prefer the metric system for measuring distances and volumes.

I prefer our system for things like density and pressure...but only because that's what I'm used to and have a feel for.  I have a feel for 5,000 psi, or 150 lb/cf...not so much for 150 kPa.  :-\

I work with metric tools everyday.

Their names are Fidel, Francisco, and Will.

You can gladly have them.

I think Skom was talking about Imperial Tools.
But your guys may qualify as well.  [laugh]

I've got far more metric tools than inch.
I've done huge amounts of design, fabrication and machining work in both systems.

I'll give it to ya, though, the metric system of threads is a lot more sensible.
When I become the Colossal Ruler of Planet Earth, 6-32 threads will be outlawed.

And, yeah, you'll have to do better than just taking back Celine.
Take back Jim Carrey and Nickelback, and give us Diana Krall.
Then we'll talk. ;D

I'm all about metric, except when I'm measuring beer.

Hogsheads per fortnight, dammit!

I had a classmate in a college physics class pregnant dog about using the metric system. The instructor told him he could use English measurements.

He required that every velocity on his homework assignment be in furlongs/fortnight.

He did not complain about the metric system again.

we tried it in 74- 75

I want those two years back

as i recall, they did the same thing to me in the mid 70's.

"you are lucky to be learning this now. soon everyone will be using the metric system..."

20 years later, they told my little sister the same thing.

but my 1999 truck still has standard bolts all over it.

WTF??

I have to say that having 12" to foot makes much easier to design things using ratios. The point of having 12 units of measure instead of 10 is that 1/4, 1/3 and 1/2 of 12 are all whole numbers. So thats a good arguement to keep the foot around. (Mayans had a base 60 for the same reason if I recall correctly). But standard measurements like teasponn, tablespoon, cup, quart and gallon and just make the beast with two backs right off and die.

Being able to work with something like a+b/a = a/b in whole numbers is so much nicer than having to use an ugly decimal like 1.6803....

I use metric only in physics and chem. everything else is SAE.

Both makes sense, i just hate fractions. Is 5/8 bigger than 1/2? if you dont work with SAE often, you have to mentally do the math. 1/2 is also 4/8. so 5/8 is just a tad bigger. what about 3/16 an 1/4. looks big, but 1/4 is also 4/16 which is a hair larger than 3/16.  but when you look at 3mm you know its smaller than 4 automtically. Plus its all 10s! 10mm in 1cm. 100 cm in 1 meter...1000 meters in 1 kilo. In other countries, theres also a denomination for half kilo. and theres also a denomonation for half cm. but thats mostly phased out.

inches i mean ,wtf. 16parts in an inch, 12 inches in a foot. 3 feet in a yard. 100 yards in a what? 100yards does not equal 1 mile or any denomenation of a mile....does it?

1 reason i am happy we use SAE is becasue im going to go grab a quater pounder with cheese. Id be pissed if i had to say Quater kilo, that owuld be one nice burger though!

Sacduc is right on hte last sentence. Fractions are more accurate than decimals, and are much friendlier to use. If you cut a piece of metal thats 1/3 an inch, it would be much better than writing .33333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333 etc.
