Heck, I may have one here I can give you-god knows it don't get used here.
If the state had not cut funding for the mental institutions, this project could never have happened.

I use the SW-Motech stuff.  You can get them at twistedthrottle.  It's basically a "horseshoe like" ring that mounts around your gas cap, and it couples with the bottom of the tank bag.  The bag never touches your tank, so the paint doesn't scratch, EVER!  You can leave it on without any worries.  Taking it off is just a matter of pulling the release lanyard.  They have different style bags that can go on it.  I'll never use a different tank bag ever again.

How noticeable is the ring when the bag is not installed?  Does it look clunky or obvious?

Painted exhaust cans, painted belt and sprocket covers, shortened rear fender, cf side panels, hugger and heel guards,
removed evap cannister, Napoleon barend mirrors, black DML crankshaft cover - it's wicked dark

errrghh....   kinda...  yes.  That is the only drawback.  But I usually have the bag on anyways.

Available tank bags and other accessories that can clip onto the ring:

I highly recommend the cortech sportech super 13 tank bag with straps.

I love the look of my Bagster tank cover and bag... I say go for the Bagster setup.

+1 on the Cortech.  I've got one on my Tricolore and love it.  Looks good, mounts easily, fits great and isn't too gangly on the bike.  No scratches or other issues at all with this bag.  You'll find a great price on it at motorcyclesuperstore.com too.  Happy shopping!
If it's got two wheels and a motor, I like it!

If you want a tank bag that doesn't rub against the tank you might want to check the Marsee website
for bags that fit your bike.
Here are some pics of mine

Haven't seen anything more user friendly or practical than this.
It is expandable to twice the size on the picture and is rated at 11 liters.
