Picked up the SF from SDD this morning and took the long way home via the Wilson Tunnel and North Shore...total for the 7.5k mile/1 year service was just over $800, which was picked up by the dealership... ;D

by then it will be out of warranty, so I'll probably do everything but check the valve clearances and change the cam belts...that'll save a couple of hundred at least...

i took the extended warranty. i figure if i am going to be making payments on it for 4 years, it might as well be covered for 4 years. so that gives me 3 1/2 years to learn how to do the valves and belts myself... if i can learn a 300ZX twin turbo inside and out, then an 848 should be a piece of cake hahahahaha... hahaha... haha...ha... or not

The valve shim kit for the superbikes & streetfighter is $400.00 for the basic set alone. Not counting installing any fancy collets or needed special tools. Do I see a show of hands?  [roll] Then there are separate kits for the old two valve engines and the new two valve engines. Or you could measure the clearances, take out the shims where adjustment is needed, measure them and order the individual replacement shims you think you need. Your engine could be apart for a month, or more, unless you put it back together and then took it back apart when the shims came in. And hope you ordered the proper needed shims. How's that?   Just sayin'.

Having Will do it doesn't seem so bad now, does it?

And that's just the valve adjustment.  Cam belts on a 4 valver are another story.

Not that any of this can't be done...... it can....... but how much is it worth?  We may all have our own answers.
No modification goes unpunished. Memento mori.  Good people drink good beer.  Things happen pretty fast at high speeds.

It's all up to your will level, your thrill level and your skill level.  Everything else is just fluff.

I think I'll just stick with changing the oil and spark plugs before I take it for the next valve clearance check... ;D

Hey, even changing spark plugs could be an adventure.  [thumbsup]

Now, out of that "$800.00" what was parts and what was labor? Did you even get a breakdown of costs & services/parts rendered on an invoice?  Did you pay separately for the tire swaps and how are those new tires? I've got one of these services coming soon and I don't think I have any freebies like that coming.  [cheeky]

Okay maybe I'll let Will do the plugs also, but I'll supply the parts... ;D

Here's the breakdown on the cost, which didn't include the m/b of the new tires ($105):

Parts  $177.45 (including $88 for 2 sparkplugs*, $20 for a filter & $65 for oil)

Labor $600 (8 hours)

Tax $36.63

New tires make the bike feel more nimble...much more eager on turn in, which will take some getting used as the bike feels like it wants to flop over on it's own...only 80 miles on them so far.

*Motorcycle SuperStore has these plugs for $16.25...each.

Ditching all that extra weight that your carrying around (think baffles) would help even that out.   ;D
