Hey,
Thanks for the Mac Tools Recommendation... was it a difficult install as a result... do you have to rewire things??? I was hoping to find the DP carbon one but the option you point out would be easy and cheap in the interim until I find what I want.

it was pretty easy. its just 4 wires, power, ground, tach signal, and illumination. I put both the power and illumination together. for 20$ you can't beat it, its even got an adjustable shift light

Hey,
The two screws that hold the plate in place came out and the unit is sealed so I can't get em back in... and the plate vibrates all over and the needle is not stable anymore... so I need to replace the tach...
The Koso guages and the ones from motogadget are both really nice... clean units... very cool.
I'll have to see what I can fit where and how the set up and connections would run..
These ideas are helpful... Thanks....
Still would love to find a stock unit if anyone knows where I can find one.....
Google up Speedometer repair or truck instrument repair. Many companies specialize in this work. It's been a while, but our local outfit had all the stuff to open up up, fix em and re-crimp the ring around the glass. Looked like a reverse can opener.

Its a bummer that I tried to fix this myself and nicked up n cracked the ring at the top screwing around with it... I might have to just get it repaired anyway... while I store up further funding for the front end reworking... lol these aftermarket guages, bars, top triples, and steering dampers are pricey... [moto]
I think if I could find the Carbon Fiber DP kit it would be the way to go though... just can't find em... it comes with a Tach and CF face plate...

the problem with the dp stuff is its just as expensive as the aftermarket gauges, if you can find it, its ussually more than retail because its so hard to find.

Yeah I have noticed that the DP stuff is definitely expensive and there is no sense that its going to be something I can get in the US for sure. I found a place in Germany where I can get it perhaps but I have to call and check it out.... and I don't speak German... lol
I'd definitely have to buy the tach and the face plate but I think I might need the bucket the whole cluster sits in cause the face plate looks to be shaped differently than the stocker...
but yeah DP is a pain in that regard... hard to find and $$$$$$

i went the cheap route on mine, i found a tach thats the same diameter to fit in the cluster on ebay,
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/RARE-MAC-Tools-Gator-Nationals-Tachometer-PROMO_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33679QQihZ025QQitemZ380058809063QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW
mac tools has a whole line, mine just says mac tools.
knightrider, when you installed a tach like this on your 900, where did you place it in regards to your 'idiot lights'? could you post a pic of your install? ive got a 97 900 and i'd like to add a tach, but don't know how/where i'd reconfigure the other lights, etc.

i accually bought the dp cluster for early bikes without the tach. it came with the wiring, but not the tachometer, and found a tach was the same diameter as the stocker so it fit perfectly.

A motogadget is really expensive, but you don't need to buy a new triple. Here's a motogadget with a stock triple with risers cut off, the holes filled and then powdercoated. Stick on some clip-ons (pictured are Tomasellis from monsterparts -- not too expensive and really adjustable) and lower the headlight (pretty much free), and you've cleaned up the front end a lot.

Duck-stew is responsible. The mounting bracket is a thin piece of black plastic. I don't have any close-up pics. Here is a gallery of bike pics. There are a couple in there of the gauge cluster and triple.

Some people had mentioned the Trail Tech Vapor Unit for a replacement speedo, tach, temp sensor on TOB, was wondering if anybody here had experience with that or pics? I'm interested in replacing the stock cluster for a few reasons...the trip odometer doesn't work, i have no tach, and it's damn ugly....
