I currently own a 2009 Speed Triple 1050. The bike is great. Anyone on the forum own a S3 and a Monster S4R? Kindly give the comparison between this two awesome bikes. I always like the the Monster S4R, I just have not ridden one for a long period of time to get a good feel. It be interesting to see the input of owners on how this bikes measure up. Thank you
regards,
707 is on his way
I would imagine handling is similar, but the S3 is probably a bit quicker. Never compared them though ~
JM
I have maybe an hour of riding time on an '07 Speed Triple. Superb machine whose power and power delivery to me felt like an even match to a stock S4RS. The ride quality, ergos and overall feel of the Monster is suited perfectly to me and felt very noticably superior to the Triple.
I felt the ergos on the triple were more natural (better) than my S4Rs.
The triple also felt less "raw" and more Japanese somehow. The brakes on the triple were worse than my S4Rs.
Speed wise, difficult, my S4Rs was slightly faster? or maybe it just felt that way ;D
I thought the S4Rs suspension was better (of course cause it got that fancy ohlins)

apples and oranges......
im still breaking in the s4rs, so i cant completely comment on the powerbands....
ergonomics, the duc is longer and lower, yet much more comfortable on the wrists,
and over long distances....
ohlins suspension is a HUGE difference, incredibly plush, while the speed triple is a little soft and underdamped/ undersprung...
torque on the triple is amazing, pulls like a freight train from 4k to redline, VERY linear and useable power....
handles very well too, but you DO have to bull it around a bit, its weight is noticable....
response on the s4rs is very strong with those 2 huge pistons giving immediate reaction around city riding...
triple is DEFinitely a hooligan/ wheelie machine....:)
different flavors, depending on your mood....
get one of each....;)
Man U go through alot of bikes ! What happened to the Daytona 675 ?
I drove a 1050 2 yrs ago. Just B4 I bought my S4RS. There is nothing wrong with that bike. U get what U pay for. They are sexy, sound great with aftermarket exhaust. But, they dont have some of the quailty of the Ducati.

Ive sat on both and the Triple is much more comfortable. But its WAYYY to tall for me. Its like dual sport tall. gotta have one foot hanging of just to hold it of at the light.
The street triple though..... [evil]
Your Triumph S3 is beautiful. I think it might be the best looking one I have seen.... and If i had seen it....
I was comparing the S3 and the S4R, and I decided on the S4R. As a couple of previous posters said, Apples and Oranges. The S3 is a little too heavy, little too tall, you have to fight it a bit, but you get a pay off in other areas. I decided on the S4R because of styling, and quality. I just love the way Ducati's look, and they are made out of the best parts.
Not to talk trash on your bike, but I visited a forum of S3 riders, and that's what made my mind up. In general (with out telling them I was looking at another bike) they seemed irritated by some of the cheaper parts on the S3, and the related failures they had experienced. The final nail was, apparently they suffer from oil system and engine problems. If you experience this, Triumph will replace your engine... but I just didn't want to kick out the cash for anything I'm not confident in.
true....
BUT.....
i frequent the triumph boards heavily as well,
and though there ARE quality issues (bad stators seem to be a current problem)
i have not heard of ANY oil related issues with the speed triple motor.
675 has been a topic of conversation, but i dont know of any firsthand.
my 2006 1050 speed triple has just broken 10,000 WELL used miles with ZERO complaints from me.
no oil usage, no clutch problems, no electrical gremlins, NOTHING.
yes, the brakes are certainly not up to par w the brembos,
so of course triumph fitted brembos in 2008.
i changed to ABM rotors and racing pads and have been quite happy with the setup...
the motor is a MONSTER, like riding an electric motor, VERY linear, just dial in the amount of wheelie youd like...;)
its a hell of a lot of bike for the $$$ and im very happy with mine....
but yes, its a pig, its big and tall and heavy and you do have to bull it around quite a bit,
but thats kindof part of its charm....
its not a cookie cutter japanese appliance....
you cant go wrong either way....:)
^ all brands of motorcycle have their own problems.
To be honest it really came down to who have the least bugs,
the most reliable overall and the fewest issues.
Through research and frequent visits to various moto boards.
And combination of different factors the Triumph Speed Triple is my choice, for now.
Of course Ducati is on the short list.

picking one up next week?
My business partner owns a speed triple, when we ride we occasionally switch bikes. The thing I like least about the bike (to me it is a pretty big thing) is the drive line lash. As you start to accelerate out of a turn there is a definite dead spot as you start to roll on the throttle then if you're not careful a bit of a jump when all the slop gets taken up

My neighbor would have to agree with you. He complains that his '08 S3 does not have the Jewels to get him out of the turn and down the straight-away once he is out of the turn. We switched bikes and personally, I thought the engine was smooth except for the sensitive gear box. The bars have you sitting in a strange spot and you do feel like your towering over the tank... My neighbor took my S4RS out and he feels he should not had done that. After that ride he's been complaining that his S3 should have more power everywhere. He definitely feels the S4RS has more torque and a better riding position.
I would even prefer my S2R1000 over the S3 any day. Don't get me wrong, I did want an '05 S3 real bad at one point. But they kept jerking me around on the black ones and I ended up with an R1.
My wingman rides an '05 S3. Has approx 18000mi on it. Has several issues with it. Dead spots, throttle response, coolant line burst, loses the gauges from time to time, mushy brakes, harsh suspension etc. I have ridden it a couple of times. Once when I had my Z1000 and just a few weeks ago. I now have the RS. Other than the sound of his bike (has LEO Vince pipes and I finally got him to remove the damn baffles) and the relatively quick wind-up of the engine, I like nothing else about it.
To each their own... but definitely apples/oranges to me.
Had the bike for a week now and it did not dissapoint. [thumbsup]
Totally happy with my choice, torque galore throughout the poweband.
Solid handling performer on the streets and the twisty roads.
It's a beast, most of you are right, the S3 and the S4R are apples and orange.
Most improved Speed Triple ever with the Brembo brakes and other updates for 09.
This bike is guaranteed to perform with brute force above and beyond anyones limit.
Triumph nailed it and they have the best naked bike with the Speed Triple. ;)
It's not a Ducati but its sure one hell of a Monster ;D
Just my 2 cents. [moto]

Not to be rude, but....do you really think it's appropriate to come on a board devoted to a
particular naked bike and state that a different manufacturer does it better?

I mainly talking about my experience.
Why are you so defensive, maybe you can check the forum rules if I violated anything.
I'm also a Ducati enthusiast and I don't have to have a Ducati to be one ;)

If I thought you had violated forum rules, I would've brought it up to a moderator.
I'm not being defensive, but look at what you basically did. You've come onto a forum with a love of a *particular*
brand and model bike, and told all of the owners on that forum, that you think their bike is inferior. Some would consider that rude.
everyone grab a beer and come back in five.
the speed triple/monster fight is a good-natured one as all bikes are cool (ones with the correct number of pistons are just a little more cool of course).
If people want to compensate with more cylinders that's ok. ;D
mods and admins are all drunk on Sat night so nobody would listen anyway.

I do find it interesting that you went from a 696 to a Daytona to a speed Triple all like with in a month.
You are not riding them long enough to figure out if you even like the bike or not.
I feel like your wondering if you made the right decision and perhaps your next bike is a S4R =)
I know someone who will have one for sale soon :P
In anycase the Speed Triple was on my short list of bikes and well but since I am vertically challenged is was not as comfortable as my current bike.
I am pretty sure this board does not discriminate on what type of bike you ride. All are welcome [thumbsup]
Actually the Street Triple was my first choice for a while.
It was the first two weeks after Milan and the new fugly 696 was on display.
But then it turned out the Street is totally sold out and that made me buy the last black/red 695 available here.
Had nothing but fun since...I don't think its underpowered at all but yes, I have no experience with a S4R.
But I have with a TNT sport...what a beast...Well...maybe in two years ;)
And don't worry about Soldier...he will have another bike within 2 weeks anyway [beer]
I think Soldier that you should have sticked with the ducati brand no matter how pissed you were at the Ron and the rest of the people bashing your 696. Do you even remember why you bought a Ducati in the first place? Swallow your pride (with all due respect), and get yourself an S4R ! The sooner the better for your piece of mind. You know this is the right choice after you keep coming back to post on this THE DUCATI MONSTER forum. You love the monster and your triumph is not a replacement, no other bike will be for that matter. We all forgive you man...we know it's the Ron's fault.. [evil] [thumbsup]
I have an '02 Speedy (955) and my wife has an '04 S4R. On the dyno my speedy with a Zard gets 113 peak and her Duc with stock pipes gets 107 . The speedy has a much flatter/smoother power delivery. Speedy's HP line is pretty much a constant slope all the way to the limiter, while the Duc seems to have 3 steps. (though I think my peak was limited by the OEM filter i was running. I've since added a K&N and will do another tuning to see the difference.)
Speedy has close to 20K on it, with no issues, the Duc is up to just over 12K. I just dropped $1300 on the 12K tune up, that's something for you S4R owners to look forward to, well that and the dry clutch is more obnoxious than the Sampson Ripsaws on my Harley.
They are both fun bikes, the Ducati is going to cost you more in maintenance. For the money, I paid 2/3 the price of the S4R for Speedy, at that rate I'll do it again and again.
I will say that Couple of months ago at the Penguin school I did enjoy driving by all of those air cooled Ducs in the straights. Now, I am seriously looking at 848 and the 1098 [beer]
As to those who know someone who had something go wrong or read it on the internet. How far do I have to go on any site dedicated to one particular bike to find someone pregnant doging about something.
Edit: Please note that this post has been modified from what I wrote. The words I used in the last line have been changed, I'll stick to thespeedtriple.com to talk about bikes. Overmoderated sites are not for me

What was the cost of the 12K tuneup/valve check/reshimming on the speed tripple?
The power-to-weight ratio of the S3? 113H.P./450+Lbs (wet and ready to go)=.25 H.P. per pound
The '04S4R is 425 wet and ready to go... and at 107H.P. that works out to be: .25 H.P. per pound

Let me make it clear. What I did was open options and look at other bikes the are available for me at the time.
I look at the MV Agusta Brutale 910R, Aprilla Shiver, Ducati S4R tricolor and Triumph Speed Triple.
Went to each dealer and look at bikes, did some research and frequent forum sites of each bike.
It was a tough decision. These bikes have different things to offer and are all topnotch in quality.
It went down to the best value, looks, power, ergo's and overall quality.
I finally decided to get the Speed Triple. At the end of the day it really does not matter what a person rides.
It's all about enjoying and having fun riding. I attend Ducati meets in my area very chance I get.
Most of my moto buddies are Ducati owners that love to drink, ride and bs about motorcycles. [beer]
Like I always say, "707 is on his way" [thumbsup]
triples are nice, but you know you'll end up with a Duc so just do it. s2r1000 would be a good bike too, and less expensive maint. than the 4V'ers. Whatever you ride dude, ride safe and come hang out. People usually say shi7 on boards they wouldn't do in person, so don't take anything personally, I ride with a bunch of people who ride duc's bmw's jap's, when you're out on the road it really doesn't matter as long as you enjoy the ride. We go ride alot and if you feel comofortable with small group rides come on out. Ducatisf.com
707 Soldier is really a teenage boy in his mothers basement with nothing better to do then bug a bunch of people on motorcycle forums. He's on the MV forum thespeedtriple.com, trat probably and I'm sure an aprilia site as well. We'd probably get rid of him if we could over at TS3, but our forum really doesn't have rules, if we banned him, we'd all be gone. Good luck with all the lame threads he's gonna start.
I have a funny suspicion he was hoping to get the "WOW" factor from us folks. Don't go to a nice Restaurant and walk in with some Carl's Jr. thinking everyone is gong to want one or embrace you...does not happen. Your going to get mixed results. Just suck it up and move on friend.

just came back from testing a 2008 Speed triple. It is such a smooth ride! I loved it! It is so easy to twist the throttle and so responsive to small inputs. It has plenty of torque and pulls hard. I rode it on the interstate and really opened it up. It wanted to go and go and go.. It feels very stable at high speeds. Around in city traffic it was so well mannered. Again it is just so easy to ride. The seat is really hard though. It sounds terrible.. well.. it is no ducati... and it had the stock exhaust.. still.. it will never satisfy my ears. Compared to my S4R..it is pretty close in the way it pulls.. but the S4R pulls harder and is stronger right away in all gear at all rpms... the triple had to be revved up to get the same muscle.. although it has it. The S4R is like a wild horse compared to the triple. Brakes were good too.. brembos on the front and Nisin on the back.. go figure. Like someone said.. it does feel more japanese.. and this is because of the way the engine makes the ride so smooth... characteristic of the inline type I guess.
Even though I loved how smooth and powerful the triple was . I would not choose it over the monster. I would love to have it as a second bike though ! Cool bike... just not a Ducati.
