My business partner owns a speed triple, when we ride we occasionally switch bikes. The thing I like least about the bike (to me it is a pretty big thing) is the drive line lash. As you start to accelerate out of a turn there is a definite dead spot as you start to roll on the throttle then if you're not careful a bit of a jump when all the slop gets taken up

My neighbor would have to agree with you. He complains that his '08 S3 does not have the Jewels to get him out of the turn and down the straight-away once he is out of the turn. We switched bikes and personally, I thought the engine was smooth except for the sensitive gear box. The bars have you sitting in a strange spot and you do feel like your towering over the tank...  My neighbor took my S4RS out and he feels he should not had done that. After that ride he's been complaining that his S3 should have more power everywhere. He definitely feels the S4RS has more torque and a better riding position.

I would even prefer my S2R1000 over the S3 any day. Don't get me wrong, I did want an '05 S3 real bad at one point. But they kept jerking me around on the black ones and I ended up with an R1.

My wingman rides an '05 S3. Has approx 18000mi on it. Has several issues with it. Dead spots, throttle response, coolant line burst, loses the gauges from time to time, mushy brakes, harsh suspension etc. I have ridden it a couple of times. Once when I had my Z1000 and just a few weeks ago. I now have the RS. Other than the sound of his bike (has LEO Vince pipes and I finally got him to remove the damn baffles) and the relatively quick wind-up of the engine, I like nothing else about it.

To each their own... but definitely apples/oranges to me.

I'm not totally useless, I can be used as a bad example!

Had the bike for a week now and it did not dissapoint.  [thumbsup]
Totally happy with my choice, torque galore throughout the poweband.
Solid handling performer on the streets and the twisty roads.
It's a beast, most of you are right, the S3 and the S4R are apples and orange.
Most improved Speed Triple ever with the Brembo brakes and other updates for 09.
This bike is guaranteed to perform with brute force above and beyond anyones limit.
Triumph nailed it and they have the best naked bike with the Speed Triple. ;)
It's not a Ducati but its sure one hell of a Monster  ;D
Just my 2 cents.  [moto]

Not to be rude, but....do you really think it's appropriate to come on a board devoted to a particular naked bike and state that a different manufacturer does it better?

If the state had not cut funding for the mental institutions, this project could never have happened.

I mainly talking about my experience.
Why are you so defensive, maybe you can check the forum rules if I violated anything.
I'm also a Ducati enthusiast and I don't have to have a Ducati to be one  ;)

If I thought you had violated forum rules, I would've brought it up to a moderator.

I'm not being defensive, but look at what you basically did. You've come onto a forum with a love of a *particular* brand and model bike, and told all of the owners on that forum, that you think their bike is inferior. Some would consider that rude.

everyone grab a beer and come back in five.

the speed triple/monster fight is a good-natured one as all bikes are cool (ones with the correct number of pistons are just a little more cool of course).

If people want to compensate with more cylinders that's ok.     ;D

mods and admins are all drunk on Sat night so nobody would listen anyway.

I do find it interesting that you went from a 696 to a Daytona to a speed Triple all like with in a month.
You are not riding them long enough to figure out if you even like the bike or not.

I feel like your wondering if you made the right decision and perhaps your next bike is a S4R =)
I know someone who will have one for sale soon  :P

In anycase the Speed Triple was on my short list of bikes and well but since I am vertically challenged is was not as comfortable as my current bike.

I am pretty sure this board does not discriminate on what type of bike you ride. All are welcome  [thumbsup]

Actually the Street Triple was my first choice for a while.
It was the first two weeks after Milan and the new fugly 696 was on display.
But then it turned out the Street is totally sold out and that made me buy the last black/red 695 available here.
Had nothing but fun since...I don't think its underpowered at all but yes, I have no experience with a S4R.
But I have with a TNT sport...what a beast...Well...maybe in two years ;)
And don't worry about Soldier...he will have another bike within 2 weeks anyway  [beer]
