So...
we upgraded to a virtual dedicated server...
to make things better.
It hasn't gone particularly well.
Due to constraints beyond our control the smf software seems to have gotten corrupted in the migration.
That's why we don't have the tp navigation or embed videos.
The board slowness is due to the fact the plan I was sold is inadequate for the number of users here...
don't hate me...
I'm a painter and just am willing to write the checks.
So...
it's time to ditch the virtual dedicated server and migrate to a dedicated server with a fresh install of the software.
It will cost more, but Daryl and I are confident it will fix the short term issues and allow for growth in the future.
So bear with us...
we hope this will all be a bad dream in a couple of days.
Thanks,
dp
Whatever you guys think is necessary to do is fine by me.
No hate here. ;)

I'm sure I will not be the only one to hit the DONATE button. I would offer my technical expertise, but it would only make things worse :P

+1. And make sure that we get 10x the capacity you think we need. People will pitch in for the cost. Otherwise, y'all will be doing this again in the next 6 months. If there's anything Jeff learned with the DML (other than not to have anything to do with VS), it was that in no time whatsoever the board would leapfrog years beyond everyone's expectations.
Thanks for all the work, daryl n' Nate n' sqweak (?) n' whoever else. I'll buy ya many beers. [beer]

With the dedicated server (unlike our current one for reason known only to our hosting provider) we can increase our resources with no more than 10 mins downtime.
This is all in motion right now and with any luck should be complete by the end of the week.
Thanks for your patience peeps.
Now I'm really worried :-\ :-\
Will you have funds left for beer?

we upgraded to a virtual dedicated server...
as i was telling daryl offline the other day, the words "dedicated" and "virtual" do NOT belong together. "virtual" implies shared hardware which, by definition, isn't dedicated. ;D

It really has nothing to do with the fact that it's a virtual server, Derby just doesn't like the terminology. The main problem is the way that our particular host handles virtual servers and more than that the amount of resources available to said server and the host's inability to modify that.
Anywho, for an update...
Nate has secured the new, better server and the process is already in motion. It's likely the board will be down for a few hours late tonight. I'll put an announcement up before it does go down, but just thought y'all would like to know.

I also appreciate all the hard work you and others have done for this site. Beers are owed.... [thumbsup] "Waytogo" its a new word
We're now on the new server, but we're not out of the woods yet. We shouldn't see the same kind of resource shortages that resulted in the unavailability of the site and the slow responses, but we have a couple major bugs we're still trying to iron out. Please be patient, we're working our hardest to get things running smoothly for everyone.
Thanks for all the hard work! [thumbsup]
Yeah thanx to all involved [thumbsup]
I have to log in each time, now. Yesterday and today. >:(
I can tell that the server is MUCH faster now today! Every page loads much more responsively. Of course, it's not having to load all the sidebar stuff, but that's just text anyway so it shouldn't make much difference.
You guys are doing a great job!

That will be remedied tonight we hope.
For some reason a test install on Daryls' personal shared server worked perfectly for everything...
The install on our dedicated server doesn't.
We're not certain why, but Daryl has a plan and even if it doesn't work we'll know where to look for the problem.
It will all work out.
Thanks for being patient.
anyway you can send an email to everyone letting them know you are back up and running at full speed?
I have seen significant drop in activity and am concerned people departed to other fields thinking you guys were gonna die.

There is a sessions file that Daryl feels needs to go...
that will reset everything to unread..
and the next time you log in the correct cookie will be written in your browser.
That, we hope, will fix all the log in issues.
Have you tried logging out and clearing the DMF cookies?
Upon Statlers advice, yes I tried deleting cookies (all of them actually [bang])
Didn't help :P
If tech work is still being done I will wait and see what happens.
Thank you for trying [thumbsup]

Well...... :-[
Actually I noticed the new address, but it doesn't say anywhere that it was a requirement that I change anything, and it wasn't required until recently. So, if I'm not off the hook with said argument I'll blame technology/server company or VS. If STILL not off the hook - I play my ignorant foreigner card and excuse myself ;D
Carry on [thumbsup]

You all may notice....
We were down for a short time today.
We were able to correct the tiny portal issues. It turned out a language file was missing. We don't know why.
You will notice the l/h navigation has been updated a bit.
There is an arrow on the right hand side of the screen that allows you to collapse/expand the l/h side bar if you choose. If you have IE and it's not working let us know.
We are now able to add articles. We should have a new BoMB as soon as Daryl gets a little time.
Keep in mind when I say 'we'...I'm talking about Daryl. We as a group are lucky he's willing to help us.
Thanks Daryl.... [bow_down] [bow_down] [bow_down] [clap] [clap] [clap] [clap]

Hehe, it might as well be.
The problem here (if anyone cares) is that we use two pieces of software, SMF - the main forum core and Tiny Portal, the sidebar, Bomb, front page stuff. Tiny Portal, while great in functionality has had some compatibility issues with the newer version of SMF and after looking at the codebase, I'm not impressed.
What this means is that I have to go in and make manual edits to the files to get everything back to normal. I plan on doing it tonight, but it may have to wait til later on in the week.
I care. The problem is I have no idea what you are saying, but soldier on, and thank you.
I care too... thank you for putting in your time into fixing our dmf :)
Me toooo [thumbsup] [thumbsup] I care. I don't know what I would do without this forum. THANK YOU [bow_down]
I had session errors this afternoon...couldn't post, couldn't log out (although the error message told me to try logging out and back in again [bang]).
I was able to solve it by clearing my cookies, then logging back in.
I just mention it in case someone else has a similar problem.
Thanks Daryl and Nate for all your hard work! [thumbsup]
Thank God we haven't updated the CDC. I guess I'll just wait for the Tiny Portal update that's compatible with the newer version of SMF. It sucks that I had to learn this by watching you guys work through the issues. Let me know if I can help in any way.
I could give a shit. Just get it fixed... [cheeky] Kidding! Imagine if I was that guy? Can't thank you guys enough for all the behind the scenes work so I'll keep doing it more. So there.
Ok, so I got Tiny POrtal back. Now, just gotta work the front page/BoMB out and we'll be in business.

Ok....
We did a fresh install of SMF to rid ourselves of the evil tiny portal. It will require you to log in again.
We also installed simple portal which is SMFs version of the portal software. It totally integrates with the board software. It looks a little different is all.
The good news is the BoMB is back... [clap]... and we have navigation on the home page.
The bad news in the very short term is we can't put the side nav on every page of the forum. They have a new version in testing that will accomplish that for us. It should be available soon.
Daryl and I feel that the wait is going to be worth it in the long term so I'll ask you to be patient.

Not sure if we are tied to SMF or not but these sites I think use something other than SMF?

They already have it in a beta version and are using it on their own site.
These people are just not going to release a version that doesn't work...unlike the tp folks that release stuff like MS that are problematic and try to fix it on the back end with patches.
