it'll do you no good to hold it in. share with us and let us help you
or at least give suggestions that have no basis in reality.
why don't you tell us how you really feel about it? :)
Waahappened????????????
Do you still have a job?
The guy I work for is slowly killing his "empire"
I run a small part of it. We are the only profitable part.
The parent company was once doing 7-9 million in sales a year. I did 2 mil a year at my best, we now average 70 grand a month with only 2.5 employees, they have 7.
The parent company now has one saleman and 6 support people, and he only does 20 grand a month.
That one salesman... is the company. He's the only source of income.
The owner got himself deeeeeeep into debt, by buy'n into a crazy housing market.
And now...... he's moving his shit, and his shitty way of running things, into my shop.
I have been left pretty much alone over the years, able to run the store as I saw fit. That's all about to change. The owner has no game plan, and is making things up as he goes along, and I'm left to pick up his pieces. The asshole actually god upset with me for have an electrician come out to give me a quote on beefing up the juice that comes into the building. I currently blow breakers running the power that me and my 1.5 employees use. (I have a part timer ;))
And then he's pissed off at me because I have not moved a shitload of stuff, I just got through moving, just so he can park all the trucks and trailers he now has to sell.
He'll spend 100 bucks just to make 10.
I made the business profitable, I got rid of the thieves, and when the economy turned, I kept us profitable, I treated it like it was mine..... I'm not sure I can stick around for a paycheck, just to watch him kill this part of the company too.

I dunno. I doubt that he would sell it now, see'n how it's the only real source of income he has.
I have about 70 grand in inventory (most of which is counted at a higher cost than what it actually cost, another of his accounting fudges), but I have no idea how much the property is worth.

~ 300k would be my guess.
250k would be a decent offer, for property, inventory, and name. Toss in a 5 year no compete.
or
wait till it fails and offer 100k

Start your own. No reason to go work for the other guy you know. You have the vendors, the know how, and the reputation. It's a slow market these days but if you cut your expenses to nearly nada you wouldn't have to sell many jobs to cover your old paycheck.
If you need a little bit of capital sell some shares here. I'm in for 1K.

I kinda see it as more of a if he ever sold the biz the people that kicked in own a share and get their money and hopefully a bit more back. I would expect it to go the route of Joel starts biz, biz does well, Joel buys back shares as he is able, Joel owns biz free and clear. You can call it a loan if you want.

I'm not jobless... I just feel like the end is getting closer.
Things.... always work out for me. I've always made due, even when I was broke and alone.
I'm just going to amp up the search for a new job..... and, work on sucking it up, and go with the boss mans flow, even though I dont agree with him.
I just got off the phone with the parent companys Tehachapi store, and they are pretty much in the same boat as I. The manager over there, has worked for the guy for many -o- years, and she has learned to just kind'a keep her mouth shut when the owner make the beast with two backss things up, then goes about fixing his mistakes when his back is turned.... and as she says.... it pays the bills.

That ain't me. What I need to do is figure out a way to show him just where he is making mistakes, and do it in such a way that it not only shines the light on them, but does not humiliate the guy.
On a personal level, the guy is a great father, and a good man..... he's just a dumbass in regards to simple business , reading people, and retail sales.

Home improvement business's aren't really worth anything. Window companies that manufacture their own product are. All a window or kitchen or roof company really is, is a sales team and either a link to installers or on staff installers. You (joel) are the sales team. You know well and good that anyone can buy from your vendors. All you need is some installers and some advertising. If you bought the company you would be paying to purchase...yourself.
The company I sold for was offered to me. I turned it down as my life was headed in a different direction. In retrospect I think the guy that bought it regret's it. He paid whatever he paid for the company name, phone number, client list, logo, etc. What he also owns is the responsibility to warranty and service all the past clients. I still sell for him. He still installs. In the end the only jobs we get are the ones we find...just like it always was. He could have just started a new company and been in the same postion he is now but without the privelage to warranty the old jobs and without spending the money to "buy" the company. We still have the same cell phone numbers which are where the clients call us anyway.
If you want to stay with the guy you are with why not give him the reality talk and explain to him what you have explained to us?

Do whats in your heart, but at the same time, you should be looking at this as an opportunity.
You know the business, the clients, the vendors.
You know the numbers side as well.
You have most of what you need right there, why not run with it?
I think hbliam has a good point. Open up down the block and the customers will run from him to you.
Hbliam is right.
You've made all of us understand the situation and some of us a really slow ;o) . So have a go at telling him.
Tell him like it is but in a tactful way.
Knowing his intentions might help.
I've got pretty good at steering bosses in my direction. Just let them think its their idea.
With the economy the way it is right now home improvements isn't realy the game to be in as a company owner or self employed conrtactor.
Sorry to hear about this shitty turn of events BP, I realy hope you can make things work whichever way it blows.

Hey BP- my old man is(was) in the glass biz and got laid off in March. He was in sales. He is up against 135 other applicants to fill a glass sales job at a local manufacturer here in MN now. Just wanted to throw that out there to put things in perspective before you say anything to the boss man. My dad has 20+ years in the biz and is having a helluva time getting back in. Granted he is 60, but there just are not that many glass jobs out there.

BP, i'm sorry your job is going in the shitter - i know the feeling
hey man, sorry to hear this....
If it all comes crashing down, have you thought of hitting up some of the vendors for a job....if you've run a clean ship, one of them would probably be willing to bring you on.
I'll go to lunch with him today, and it'll be interesting to hear what he has to say.
He is known for being forgetfull, he makes up things, wants them implemented, then forgets about them. It's made for a very thick employee hand book.
At lunch, he'll be reminded that there are now, more pages in the handbook than employees.
Late yesterday, he brought over one of the parent company's employees, Tammy ( one of their salesmans assistants), she stated with the company before I was transferred over here. I see her almost daily, we've all been in the same room together many-o-times. When she and he were here yesterday, he introduced me to her, as if he thought we've never met. ???
He's the type of guy who's overly friendly and nice. It comes across as being fake (in a used car salesman kinda way), but once you get to know him, you see that he's actually nice, and not fake.... but it all still seems robotic. I personally think it's his way of dealing with everybody, because he does not "read" people well. He'll be reminded of that at lunch today (tactfully)
If I get demoted today, depending on how my pay is effected, I may walk.
If I get fired today, I'll shake his hand and wish him luck, then quietly explain to him why he'll need it. Then go down the street and tell my former competitor, expect to see a lot of business coming his way. I'll also contact my main supplier, tell them of my departure, and talk business. They run small satellite stores in Nevada and California, and have stayed out of Bakersfield as a consideration to my store. I'll let him know how my boss has been killing the business, and let him know I'll be more than happy run one of his stores here in town.
It's gonna be a fun day.
