Please don't let me be the only one with a make the beast with two backstard for a boss. I dunno how some people stand it.
Not only is he a horrible scheduler but he keeps giving us new guys projects that we shouldn't be working on alone and then doesn't help us when we ask for it. >:( On top of that he doesn't give us nearly enough time (1 week to design and create all drawings and details for 2 small masonry buildings + 1 masonry gym). Then when you don't make enough progress on a job he yells at you (no offices, just cubies so everyone knows you're gettin' it) and says things like "I'm gonna kill you if don't have this done by tomorrow" or "I'm gonna rip your head off if you forget this again."
To top it all off he's got these big bug eyes and shitty english and when he gets pissed his english deteriorates very quickly and he starts slobbering a little and when he widens his already big bug eyes it makes me just wanna punch him in the face. Oh, did I forget to mention that he talks down to EVERYONE? Contractors, architects, engineers, doesn't matter. He's always got this tone in his voice that says "I know everything and you know shit, so do what I say." I hear him on the phone all thet ime w/ contractors telling them how to do their job. Like once with a soils engineer he didn't like the allowable bearing pressure we were given so he told the soils engineer to raise it. Plain out. He just says to the guy, "Shouldn't the bearing pressure be 3000psi here? I think it should be 3000psi, 2000psi is just too low."
Oh god, I don't know how much longer I can put up with this jerk off. I keep telling myself that a different boss would be better. I've only been here 3 months and I've already seen 1 guy leave because he couldn't stand it anymore after about 1.5 years. I'm already counting the days until 1 year so that I can scoot once the economy is better.
I know deadlines will always be closer than you want them. I know it's not your bosses job to baby you and be your friend but he doesn't have to be a total jackass about it. I should stop carrying my knife lest I lose it one of these days. :-[
my boss is a make the beast with two backstard too.
i have 3 bosses.
all of them are varying levels of make the beast with two backstard.
the most make the beast with two backstarded one just got promoted to senior manager over the one that has been a mgr longest and has actually done the job of the employees he oversees.
and our director has quite the ego on him. he has spread that to the mgrs to cover their incompetence.
the mgr are so well protected here it's scary. gotta love big business! [thumbsup]

Does he really say things like "I'm going to kill you" or "I'm going to rip your head off" in a serious way? Can you take him in a fight? It would be funny if one day while he was yelling at you that he was going to rip your head off, you just stood up and said "BRING IT pregnant dog!" I bet it would shock the shit out of him, and just to be safe, let him hit you first ;D (obviously I'm joking... a little)
I have had dick bosses, but none have really threatend with the whole physical violence thing. Are you in the armed services? I just didn't think people in offices did that shit.

I do structural engineering. [roll] When he says things like I'm going to kill you he has a very serious and threatening tone in his voice. I know he just means that he's gonna yell at me but it's still not right to say that kinda shit. I was thinking along the same lines as you though. The next time he says that I'm gonna tell him better be serious about actually killing me or ripping my head off or I'm gonna kill him first. I know it's a quick route to unemployment but I'll get a kick out of it.

next time he starts yelling at you like that, calmly pull your concealed weapon out of wherever you keep it on your body and set it on the table next to your computer. THEN tell him you really dont like hearing his shit all the time and ask if he wants to come through with his "threat" to kill you or rip your head off.
if you dont have a concealed weapon and license to do so, now would be the perfect time/excuse to get one.
Couldn't HR put a stop to his threats of physical violence? He's making your office a "hostile environment". If your company is big enough to have an HR person, I'd probably give them a call.

+1
There is no excuse for that kind of behavior and unless you do something to stop him legally (the HR route) he'll keep doing it to other people. You might not snap, but someone else might. Get HR to fire him or at least put a muzzle on him. If he does anything to you in reprisal that's an offense for which he can be fired.
Work is hard. That's why it's called "work" and not "fun." Dealing with people is difficult too. BUT there is no reason to put up with that kind of crap.
all bosses/supervisors are numbnut make the beast with two backstards in the eyes of at least some of their employees. its a fact of life.
they feel the same way about you.
that said, i think you have an extreme situation on your hands.
Although the violence vs. violence scenarios would be cool, you would get in a lot of trouble.
Record the verbal abuse. Tell him in a very low voice that's there's no need to be abusive, and when he is willing to discuss the issues in a calm manner you'd be happy to talk to him. If the abuse continues, say excuse me while I take this to the HR Department.
It's not your fight. His communication skills are terrible, and that reflects on his management. The company is blind to not realize that his ineffectiveness translates to their high cost of business (whether that translates into structural failure, re-doing plans, and if other professionals don't want to deal with him - how can the pertinent information pass from them to your company??? He's a liability to the comapny.
Good luck.
I don't deal well with people raising their voices to me.
You can correct me. Don't yell at me. I will walk-right then and there.
I heard SGH in SF is hiring, if you really want out.
+1 on documenting the abuse before that trip to HR. Written log for times and frequency. Audio is real nice for concrete proof of the abuse and the exact tone of it. Not as satisfying as violence but more effective from your end. (or you could take a sharpened #2 pencil, jab it in his side and snap off the remainder [evil] [evil])
Please tell me this retard isn't a P.E. ? You'd have grounds for having his license revoked.
Tape recorders were invented for a reason.

Go this route^^^. What he is doing is a huge liability to his company. He's a pussy, with a massive self-esteem problem; he likes abusing power. He will back down. Besides, what is he going to do? Have you fired? He is the one who threatened you, first.

I have had to deal with schlongs such as this in the past ,and my best advice would be to see if the shit still pours out of his mouth while you are squeezing on his windpipe.
That will usually take care of the situation.

I'm in engineering as well, and if one of my bosses spoke to me like that I'd tell them to make the beast with two backs off. Without hesitation. That is completely uncalled for and unprofessional. I've had a contractor yell at me once...and he got it right back (we now get along well...I think it actually helped :P). Yelling is uncalled for...yelling and threatening is ridiculous.
We have a couple open positions for engineers with structural backgrounds. Offices in SF, Seattle, Pasadena, and a few other places. PM me if you're interested. If your not, at least tell you boss to stick it up his ass.

+1 on the HR route. esp. if everyone who's facing the harassment will go along w/it
my boss, micro-managing GF, and three-headed beast of a work leader can all be lumped into the make the beast with two backstard category.

Weird, huh? I think that people who like to yell at other people have more respect for someone who stands up to them, rather than just taking it...at least in the work environment.
Don't ever let someone shit on you. If you do, then everyone else you meet will smell it on you and assume it is OK. [laugh]

Chiming in from the other point of view...
I'm not a make the beast with two backstard boss, I'm more of an asshole boss. I expect employees to be able to keep up with me while also maintaining my quality standards. Apparently, that's somewhat make the beast with two backsing unrealistic.
So, I generally settle for someone that doesn't slow me down too much and doesn't usually make the beast with two backs up more than 40% of what they touch. [bang]

I left my previous job, because I were not qualified enough to put up with the bosses shit [bang]
My boss doesn't talk to me for weeks at a time, my section is right by the main Entrance and he has to pass me 3 to 4 times a day, he just ignores me like I wasn't there.
Frightening part is, the rest of the other Staff are jealous of the fact he won't talk to me ;D
Typical Chinese owner (I hate to enforce the Stereotype, but this Guy is a typical tightarse chinaman only interested in money) carries on like he has no money, always crying poor, mind you he just bought a 1.2 million dollar apartment and a $200K Mercedes, yet when he comes to work he drives this old piece of shit car to try to hide the fact he has money, he just set up another business (A chinese takeaway - I suggested he call it "The Golden Retriever") And he denies any connection to that as well.
He steals any spivs and bonuses that suppliers send to the staff, he has a room next to his office that is jammed packed with freebies and bonus stock from suppliers, he never uses it, or gives any of it away.
He won't get anything repaired or fixed, regardless of how unsafe it is, "I can't afford to mate, when business picks up I get it fixed" broken ladders, emergency lights that won't work, half the warehouse lights don't work, fire doors blocked.
We had 35 guys trying to use 1 bathroom stall because he wouldn't pay for a blown bulb to be replaced in one down stairs (room was pitch black), and a $2 washer in the other (used $1200 worth of water in 6 months, so he disconnected it!). He won't pay a cleaner to clean the bathroom(s) like the law states he should, If I need to use the bathroom I go home, I'm not putting on a Hazmat suit to use the one shitter still in working order (It needs fire bombing, not cleaning!)
The front/outside of the store is messy and filled with rubbish, we had complaints from other local business's and the local public asking him to tidy it up and have it re-landscaped, we even had a local councillor call in and plead with him to clean it up and have some pride in the town and his business, again nothing done.
Theres a full front plastic bumper assembly in the middle of the garden, number plate still on, it's been there for months!
I reckon he would take candy from a Baby if he thought a dollar or 2 was in it for him!
What's the good word, from erkishoarde? Do we need to get bail money together?
Luckily the bossman is out of town on vacation for 2 weeks. ;D Work is so much better w/o him here but I have a few projects due in the next couple days that are really kicking my butt. I did get a new "boss" so to say.
A new PE started on Friday and she's not a whole lot better. [roll] Anytime I have a question she acts like anyone would know the answer and talks to me like I'm a child. Either that or she goes on and on about how Penn. State's Architectural Engineering major is so much better than Cal Poly's and how they learned how to do what I'm asking about there and Cal Poly's program sucks since we didn't learn it. >:( She's always talking down to me and it's starting to piss me off too. I think my tolerance for people in general is gone. I mean, my luck w/ bosses can't be that bad, right? These people can't be that horrible so it must be me. [roll] Oh yeah, she's also pretty slow. She wanted to hang a header from a beam but I kept trying to explain to her that she couldn't because it would cause the header to stick out of the ceiling (sloped ceiling). I showed her elevations, sections, plans, the 3D model, just everything and she still couldn't get it. :'(
So how bad is it, really, to leave your job after less than half a year? :'(
Touch her in her dirty place...that'll make her leave you alone. That's my best advice. Good luck.

If you put it on your resume, you will get asked about it at interviews.
If you show a gap on your resume, you will get asked about it.
It's doable, but make sure you are prepared to answer those kinds of questions. A good cover letter will also try to explain why you are looking for a new position so soon.

It's not that bad...once. I left my 1st job after grad. school because it sucked. When asked (by my current employer) I was just honest and told them why I left.
Make a habit of it and it becomes bad.

A good cover story will go miles to explain this. Possibly something along the lines of how things got too hot after you knocked up the bosses secretary on his desk, your wife came storming in and explained to the boss why one of his keyboard keys was "sticking" that you felt you were forced to write "I quit" on your butt and xerox it and hang it about the office. It could happen to anyone.
