Title: Anyone own a H3?
Post by: cyrus buelton on November 29, 2008, 11:14:07 AM
Looking at a 2006 H3 with the wife.

Any thoughts?

From what I have read, seem to be reliable and decent fuel mileage, between 15-18, considering the size.

48k miles and an extended warranty to 100k for 19,800, list price.

What is your purpose in buying it?

General transportation?  Off Roading?

I think there are probably quite a few other choices out there that would be better.

That would depend on what you need.  Cargo space? Off road capability?  On road comfort?  Fuel economy? 4wd? Et cetera.

I have a consumer reports 2009 buyers guide sitting next to me:

2006 h3 - first year for it.
Scored below average on drive system repairs, engine major repairs, paint & trim, body integrity
Used car verdict - "much worse than average"

Consumer reports isn't  perfect, but it is an indicator.

IIRC reading about the 2006 models, they were severely underpowered because they pulled the I-5 from the Canyon/Colorado (still same basic chassis IIRC) and put a much heavier body & drivetrain.  If it's the article I think I was reading, it also didn't even make it to 60mph before it passed the brake point for the 60-0 brake test.  Maybe 0-60 in 11 seconds?

The H3 is an exercise in taking a mediocre truck and making it worse while increasing the price tag.

didn't seem underpowered to me, but then again, I guess we all have different driving habits and expectations in a vehicle.

Except as I recall the FJs don't have a low-range mode.  ;)

To me, it ain't an off-roady type vehicle unless you can drive over your neighbor's car at idle.

Someone locally has one that's totally tricked out, fully articulated suspension, beadlock wheels, and all. The entire exterior (and probably the interior) is sprayed with pickup bed liner, very nicely done. It looks awesome and talk about easy to maintain.

herm,

I completely agree with you.

However, finding one in that condition for a price less than what you can get an FJ Cruiser for (which has more space and better fuel economy) is virtually impossible.

Forget the H3 and the fj for that matter.

Get the Jeep Wrangker JK, 4 door.  Ive been itching for one but I love my Avalanche too much.  Whats better than going topless in the summertime?

Seriously?

They actually have the worst power to weight ratio of the three (four if you include xTerra).

And sit just above H3 for worst fuel economy of the four.

And have the least towing capacity.

I think I am going to go with a 2006 Jeep Liberty turbo diesel.

Only thing I would worry about is repair costs. Since they no longer make the diesel version, my friend in the parts dept at the largest Chrysler dealer in the area says the parts have sky rocketed.
I wanted one as well...also wanted a Toureg V10 Turbo Diesel. But then I worked on the shakers for a long time in the Army and am biased towrds black clouds of exhaust. Wel that and my friend's 1100 ft lbs of torque from his Cummins Dodge...

My sister has one.

It has been a mess:
-Won't idle in the winter (mind you, it doesn't get THAT cold in GA)
-Has had the idler pully replaced 3 times.
-Shuts off randomly while trying to start from a stop and turn at the same time.

I think we are kind of looking for something the same as you.

The wife says she HAS to have a suv, so I said if we get one it has to have 4wd/awd and be able to tow stuff

the short list:

jeep comander
VW toureg
Nissan Xterra
Honda Pilot (not very useful off-road, but the wifey likes it and it has AWD)
neighbor has a X5 he wants to get rid of, for a decent price

was on the list  but booted:

Jeep liberty (I liked them until my parents bought one...it is LITERALLY falling apart in the driveway)...isn't diesel though
diesel grand cherokee (found out that was a one year deal I guess?)
FJ (no back doors)
yota 4 runner

Xterras rock.  [thumbsup] I have an '04 with ~65,000 miles. No problems AT ALL. It also has real 4WD, not some push button electronic system with no low gear and no shift lever.

My only complaint is it gets bad mileage (~14-15 mpg city...~19-20 hwy). It's the older version with the smaller engine (170 hp 6 cyl). Could use more power on the freeway for passing, but I don't mind really...it's a truck not a sports car.

I have a 2006 xterra, and so far, so good.  A few little cosmetic and trim problems, but the engine and drive train are solid and nice.  I can get 20mpg in the summer, and 15mpg in the winter.

I also tow a 2500lb boat, and do some mild off roading with it, and it handles no problem.

Great resource when interchange parts can be had...hehe. A vast majority of the post-transmission drive train parts are the same as are body/interior components. It's the wire loom, engine and trans parts that start to become questionable. Had my brother's friend run a search for a few engine and transmission parts through his salvage yard network and he came up with 1 Liberty Diesel in the 1700+ salvage yards on the network. Just something to consider.

Chrysler ended up buying a shit ton of them back for various reasons.

Bottom line: they appear to be shit

I tried my uncle's Toyota Highlander Hybrid in September.. it's a bit small for a true 4x4 stature but, this thing is rapid up to 90mph and in gear acceleration is excellent..

Or a Land Cruiser!

I grew up on Land Rover S2 trucks in east africa, my father loved these cars - we had a V8 pickup that my dad bought from one of the catholic missions and that was mean.. but, personally I go for reliability and real off road ability without having to modify the car. I had a Land Cruiser 95 LWB for a few years and I really loved it, off road it was great and never ever let me down.

I told you that I have a longer list of projects than I could ever complete in one lifetime.
I was driving that when I first moved to PA. At least I had an opportunity to put 4 feet of air under the tires before I parked it.
The Chevelle has been sitting where it sits almost as long too and should be the priority project anyway.
I would like to make the Jeep run again though, it was fun.

I test drove a brand new '06 Jeep Liberty when looking for a new 4x4 suv, and had 2 problems on the test drive.  It would not go into reverse consistently, and fan setting #3 did not work - the fan just shut off.  Otherwise I liked it, but I crossed it off right away based on that experience.

+1 on the Liberty, I had a 2004 and in a year and a half of running around upstate NY I managed to put 85k on that thing and it was "almost" unstoppable. It was my fault for taking it down a seasonal/snowmoblie path and after five miles I decided to turn around (not so smart).

That thing never skipped a beat, never was in for any repair at all, was stoopid easy to drive and park, the 4wd was easy and flawless, mileage was around 20 (but I've got a VERY heavy foot, and don't have to pay for gas ;D). I'd recommend it , hell I'd even buy one if I needed a car.

+1 on the FJ, My friend has one and we convinced him to dune it one weekend, it never had an issue. [thumbsup]

have you had issues with your windows?

my parents bought a 06, and both of the rear windows have fallen down while it was parked in the driveway. they just fall....one of them busted when it hit the bottom of the inside of the door.

thats not the only problem, there have been many more, but that'd be a big issue with me...especially if they fell while I was at the mall and all my shit got stolen  [laugh]

What year and what motor Chevelle?  I had a 72 SS 454 convertible clone.  My favorite car ever!
'69 SS 396, every time I try to get started with doing something with it, another thing comes up to put it on hold again.  :'(
I keep debating selling it to someone who actually has the time and money but I don't really want to.

Ugh...a Defender 90? My old bss had 3 of them...not all at once but the first 2 had so many issues (brand new mind you) the dealer bought em back eventually. The third one is marginally better but he says his old FJs are better in most every way to his new Defender.

The same consumer reports I quoted on page 1, ranked almost all Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep vehicles at the bottom of their class for reliability.

that may be so

however

with my 2003 TJ

I can replace the entire drive train from motor to hubs for 2500 bucks

you could barely replace a single component in any of those more reliable vehicles for that

A little late to the discussion, but came across this:

http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2008/12/05/hummer/ (http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2008/12/05/hummer/)

For the record, I own a 2001 4-Runner (a great vehicle...maybe a little small for the family, but a good 4x4, decent on washboard and forest service roads, and carries a shit ton of stuff on the rack I added -- highly recommended).

Oh, any my favorite Hummer-bashing bumper sticker, which I'd think was funny even if I owned one: "Nice Hummer.  Sorry about your penis".   [laugh]

I've had an FJ for the past year.

Fantastic car.
Great engine/tranny.
Good MPG (for an SUV).
Great for carrying dogs around.
Easy as hell to clean.
Everyone tells me it's awesome off-road (I've never cared to).
Stone reliable.
Low maintenance costs.
Great dealer network.

It has one back door.  It hinges horizontally.  The glass also opens independently of the door if you like.

It has suicide doors for the rear passengers - that was my biggest reason for going with the xterra over the FJ.  The FJ rear passenger doors are a PIA to use in my opinion.

Oh, haha, yeah it has suicide doors.  In my experience, they haven't been a PITA, but I imagine if you were trying to stuff 6 foot men back there daily, it would get old.  I think the FJ is smaller overall than the Xterra as well.  It tends to look bigger than t really is.

The dimensions are about the same.  The xterra passenger doors suck too, and the seating is cramped, but for lifting kids in and out of car seats, it is doable.  I am not sure how lifting kids into a fj would be, but it seems like it would be hard if not impossible.

herm,

I completely agree with you.

However, finding one in that condition for a price less than what you can get an FJ Cruiser for (which has more space and better fuel economy) is virtually impossible.

yeah, but with the old (cheap, beat to crap) FJ40s, rust is a feature, not a bug. I could ford a stream up to my butt (I didn't have a snorkel, so couldn't sink the carb...) and didn't have to bail out the truck, since it already had drain holes!

Man, I miss my 1973 FJ40...

Don't really need all the room of a full sized sport utility, so a smaller vehicle is the way to go.
