Outsiders -- You got me here...
Cocktail -- Did nothing for me
Risky Business -- Again nothing...
Young Guns -- Unless he had an uncredited cameo, I think you may be thinking of Charlie Sheen...My bad...he did indeed have an uncredited cameo...obviously it was that good since I have seen that movie 100 times and never noticed
Rain Man -- Hoffman carried that movie for me, otherwise Cruise was mediocre
A few Good Men -- Tolerabe performance
Interview With a Vampire -- Definitely could have picked a few other actors who would have been better in the role
Vanilla Sky -- Never saw it
Eyes Wide Shut -- Never saw it
Collateral -- Never saw it
Days of Thunder -- You are joking right?
Top Gun --  [puke]
Far and Away -- OK...have the hots for Nicole in this one so I will give it to you

you didn't enjoy any of these movies?

You forgot The Last Samurai (far and away the best Cruise movie in my opinion)
And the MI series (which all blew btw)

Is he a good actor? IMHO there are better out there but in the right role he is indeed good. I love Travolta because he is a great actor and isn't a public douchebag about his religious choice while Cruise makes it point to scream SCIENTOLOGY from the highest roof tops. He is no better or different than any otherof the countless religious zealots who try to shove their religion down the throats of the rest of the world.

Tom cruise wasn't in young guns... Charlie sheen(who played a jet jockey in Hot Shots a la Top gun knock off) was.

Its not that he's not a decent actor (just decent), its that his off-screen persona has taken on such enormous proportions that its impossible to seem him as anyone other than Tom Cruise.  Tom Cruise makes friends with samurai, Tom Cruise tries to Kill Hitler, Tom Cruise drives NASCAR, etc.  He has been in some great movies - Risky Business, Rain Man, Collateral, Eyes Wide Shut, Interview With The Vampire, Magnolia, and Vanilla Sky - but they were great despite of him, not because of him; they all had phenomenal direction and/or superb scripts.  Bryan Singer is not a phenomenal director (despite The Usual Suspects, which is a fantastic film, but only because it had such a great script and some great performances), and I already know the story.

Word is they had to spend $60 million on promotion because the public's perception of Cruise is so negative.  That will give this film a budget of around $140.  It will struggle to make half that domestically.  It will do well overseas, and with DVD sales, etc., it will turn a profit.  But when you tie up $140 million+ over 2+ years, you expect to do better than 10% or 20% on your money.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is supposedly getting incredible public reception.  Packed, applauding theaters and good word of mouth.

I went to go see it yesterday night and was pleasantly surprised, as were all my friends. It was well done and low on the cheese factor. I almost even forgot it was Tom Cruise.

In my opinion, Cruise might be a nut job but he's pretty good at what he does. He might never win an Oscar but he makes for a pretty great regular guy action/suspense hero.

We were going to see Benjamin Button and then found out it was 3 hours long so ended up seeing Valkyrie.  The s/o and I both liked it.

I took the advice previously posted and forgot about Cruise and paid attention to the other actors and the story.  It made it more enjoyable.  Plus, some old guy kept the experience entertaining.  He was fighting people to get a seat and when he finally got one..which was at my immediate right..he fell asleep in the first 10 minutes.  I kept having to bump and/or elbow him when the snoring got too loud.   [roll]

Cruise is a good actor, appreciate most of his flicks, more of his older ones verse new ones.....

but....

that guy is a douchebag.

I wish he would leave this little "religion" out of his shit.

Hell, that cost him a HUGE contract with his last production company.

That has nothing to do with what he does for a living.

if you watch his recent interviews, he realizes that he's been somewhat of a zealot and he's toned it down.

So does Brad Pitt. He's a better actor and less of a douchebag to boot.

You should remove Vanilla Sky from your list and replace it with Jerry McQuire. Vanilla Sky is easily the worst vanity project this side of Battlefield Earth. The only difference is that I can watch Battlefield Earth repeatedly for the unintentional comedy that it is. Vanilla Sky just sucks ass.

Wow! Right on with words I would have typed here as well.  [thumbsup]

As for my opinion on the movie, I thought it was a good. I went in thinking I'll need to forget about Tom and follow the rest of the show. It ended up being with such direction that there was no effort needed in overlooking Tom.

Yeah but the other ones are, afaik, way less sensitive about it to the point of wearing special shoes to make themselves look taller.

just saw it.

was able to suspend belief until I saw eddie izzard's first scene.

don't get me wrong, I think eddie is teh awseom! but that really just did it for me.

although, they did cast a couple of german actors from a far superior (and recent) WWII film for this one. so that was nice.

Back on topic:

I was impressed by the movie because they REALLY stuck to the facts very closely. Right down to the acid-detonators, the circumstances of the plot, even the details of the executions

(SPOILER ALERT, if you don't already know the history)

The aide did in fact jump in front of Stauffenberg during the execution, and the conspirators were in fact hung by piano wire from meathooks at Hitler's request. Even the turning point with Goebbels on the phone did in fact happen as depicted. All in all I think 5000 people died in the purge after the attempt, if memory serves me. I kept picking up on little details throughout that were very close to the real deal; this makes for a mediocre action thriller, but a good historical war movie. The only thing that bugged me was the general at the start of the film in North Africa; he is clearly modeled after Rommel, complete with British goggles, but Rommel wasn't killed in NA, he was forced to commit suicide after the plot failed (oddly no mention of this was made in the epilogue).
