as many of you who have met me know
I like to drink
but
it appears that I may be on the wagon against my will
the last 3 times I have partaken in the beverage from the gods (edit* without being under the heavy influence of denial so more like the last 15 times)
on the first drink
Instant horrible headache
and nausea on as little as 2 beers
Drinking really expensive vodka means no nausea but still get the brutal headache
as little as 2-4 drinks over the course of a night will result in a week long hangover
and
what can only be described as moderate depression
Also regular pop makes me feel like shit
and I cannot stand the taste of aspartame
this is going to force me to become healthy and that can only suck
who wants to live until you are shitting in diapers again?

I agree with this. ETOH always used to make my head hurt (cluster headaches, AKA migraines) until some doc put me on a prophylactic BP med. Food for thought at least...

thought about that
something similar happened about 5 years ago
couldn't even choke down a beer
switched to vodka and everything was fine
after a few months I could drink beer again and no issues
but this seems to be pretty wholistic and very sudden
but there doesn't seem to be any other physiological symptoms

last night after a beer I was a mess and poked and prodded myself
BP: 130/84
HR: 95 (a little elevated for a resting rate)
RR: 16

I kinda have the same problem. I used to be quite the drinker and have thoroughly abused my body. Now if I have more than a few beers I can get severe headaches. I can have a glass or two of tequila and don't get the headaches but the nausea follows really soon. I was never a light weight.
+1 on seeing a doctor, or bending one's ear.
IIRC, sqweak (member here in SoCal) has some kind of issues crop up with drink, he's on the wagon.
Can't for the life of me remember what symptoms he had.
Good luck with it.
You have it all wrong...
you need to drink more...
it will stop all the headache and hangover issues.
You need to be drunk at all times. ;)

You know, at the risk of a lot of brick bats and derision hurled my way, I will go ahead and say it anyway.
Have you ever tried drinking wine? (ducks behind couch).
You mention beer & vodka, but PBR and potatoe rotgut and similar hard stuff wasn't ever exactly supposed to be good for you. You never mentioned wine.
Decent wine actually has good stuff in it. Drinking wine in moderation has been accepted as a good health habit. Those goldang Frenchies god bless them start drinking that stuff as children (under supervision at the dinner table). They grow up to be chain-smoking, fois-gras lard-sucking, butter-slatherin', ennui'ed sons-of-pregnant doges that live to be 97. OK, I'm joking a little (and no offense intended to the french or french-descended). But there's some element of truth there.
I don't advocate wine snobbery and I don't cotton to those that adhere to wine snobbery, but it is a lot of fun to just explore that stuff through drinking at your own pace and desire.
There is a whole universe of wines out there begging to be tried. The wine-making process is fascinating. The untold myriads of vintages, years, tannin content, aromas, flavors, history, origin blah blah blah is actually kind of fun to learn about.
So, I'm just saying. Try it. You might like it. And it might not actually make you feel bad if you drink it with your meals. You ever have an awesome burgundy with your bacon-wrapped grilled sirloin? It'll knock yer socks off.
That's all I got. Good luck, Mother.
...or
you could go to the doctor and make sure you don't have diabetes.

I'm a doc, Mom, but I've been doing retina surg for a while so I'm almost useless for anything else. [laugh] Sounds to me like maybe blood chemistries are in order (BMP, LFT's). If that's all nl, maybe see an allergist?
Coincidentally, I've got a friend who's an allergist and has had to essentially stop the drink due to getting eczema every time he does [bang]. If anything comes of his workup, I'll let you know.
You need to eat something light while you drink. I worked in Russia a few years back and there'd always be a plate of sliced cucumbers and tomatoes to eat along the vodka (downed in huge shots.) I was able to drink way more their way than I ever thought I could and no bad hangovers. Stay away from bread and cheese. You could include some raw pork fat but that's advanced stuff. Russians know a thing or two about drinking.
mom,
good luck with whatever you decide to do
Hope you work things out Mother.
I don't drink much either, I'm a lightweight now and get drunk on half a bottle of beer. I'm usually the designated driver.

Sulfites are added to wine (and other foods) as a preservative, so yes they are in box wines. Certified Organic wines don't have sulfites as far as I know...but most others do.
i ain't no doctor but id lean towards thinking of some sort of allergy potatoes, barley and hops aren't really all that far apart could be a coincidence maybe not try the corn liquor
I am with the painter on this one, try to stay drunk or have some other form of brain damaging substance keep you in a trance, like paint solvents. :o
First, condolences. It is tough when something you love turns on you :(
Second, a home experiment. Someone mentioned diabetes - if this is a blood-sugar related thing, try drinking some rum. As you may know, pretty much all booze has unfermented sugars, except for rum - it is distilled into pure alcohol that they add water to make it drinkable. At that, it is still arguable. Blech.
Dunno your eating habits, but if you usually avoid them, try eating a bunch of sweets to see if you start feeling the same way. I mention this because you said regular soda makes you feel crappy. May be something to the insulin thing...
the diabetes thing is always a concern, but the only CBG abnormalities I have seen is hypoglycemia and it is always after being awake for extremely extended periods time (24+) and not eating and only when pop was part of the diet, I cut pop out for 18 months and never had an issue. oh and johnny, wine always gives me headaches, tanins or some such thing...sulfides?

Not really.
It really could depend on what he ate prior to taking the reading, etc.
Consistent reading of the Systolic of 130 is high normal, but not too alarming.
When you reach 140, you are considered to have high blood pressure and should probably see a Cardiologist and work on your diet along with some medication.
His Diastolic is only two clicks above high normal, so not alarming at all.
But even a bigger factor of blood pressure, regardless of age........
genetics. Huge factor.

So are you gonna get tested hon for the allergy and the diabetes?
And yes, you're going to become a health freak. I need to keep you around to amuse me for a good long time. :-*
Some people are more sensitive to the effects of alcohol than are others. However, this doesn't mean you have an alcohol allergy.
A true food allergy involves your immune system. In such cases, your immune system mistakenly identifies a specific food or a component of that food as a harmful substance. Your immune system triggers certain cells to produce immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies to fight the "enemy" food or food component. Signs and symptoms of food allergy include tingling in the mouth, hives, breathing difficulties, and swelling of your lips, tongue or throat.
An alcohol allergy would be very uncommon. However, you could be allergic to other ingredients in an alcoholic beverage, such as wheat or sulfur dioxide, a preservative. There are also substances in some alcohol beverages such as wine that can cause flushing or even rashes.
Still, it's more likely that you have an alcohol intolerance â€" which means you are more sensitive to the normal effects of alcohol. Alcohol can cause a variety of immediate adverse effects on the body, including headache, rapid heartbeat, nausea or vomiting, heartburn, abdominal pain, nasal congestion, or warm, red, itchy skin.
Many people of Asian descent experience an unusual flushing reaction after drinking alcohol â€" even in very small amounts. This is caused by a genetic disorder in which the body is unable to break down alcohol completely. Some research suggests that people who experience alcohol flush reaction may be at increased risk of alcohol-related conditions, such as cancer of the esophagus and liver disease.
The only solution to all of these problems is to avoid alcohol.

+1, many doctors seem to downplay diabetes. If you are at risk it may be worth it to get a referral to an endocrinologist.
I had the same thing happen to me a while back (oh, 5 years?) after a night of binge drinking soju and nigiri sake (i.e. Shiboritate)..
... the next morning, i felt a jillion tiny nipponese pounding on my brain stem and whacking me in the eyes with golf balls. i thought it was just a hangover from hell until a few weeks later, i had a business meeting (err ahem) with one of our european pals who liked to drink (oh, the Finns) anyhow, i got home stinking drunk and around 2 am i awoke with the worst headache of the 21st century -- went to the bathroom to self-decapitate and when i switched on teh lights, it was as if someone punched me in the face.
--migraine!!--
after a few rounds of MRIs and stuff, i was given a few drugs and sent home -- those drugs have kept me alive.
i still drink, if i didn't, i'd be on one of those COPS shows being arrested after something "horrible"... drinking keeps me sane, God help the world if alcohol is banned.

Some red wines are loaded with sulfiites, like that gallon jug of red that you drink all week after opening, some are just in a bottle that was rinsed in a mild sulphite solution, then there are all levels between. You may also be reacting to tannic acid. If you react to an expensive Bordeau aged in oak, but not an inexpensive light red it is probably the tannins.

I experimented
Purely organic beer has zero negative effect
I am going to explore the possibility that this is some kind of reaction to a preservative
Most microbreweries use premium ingredients and little to no preservatives so I would try that route.
