I have an '08 Acura MDX that is due for its first oil change. Wondering if its worth the extra dough.

What Cyrus said.

They sell a bunch of ultra long life oils, last I saw.
12$ for a quart AMSOIL???
You got taken my man or they raised their prices.
If you want the name of a Amsoil Rep, I can throw you a few and they could get you a case for around 85$, at least that is what I paid last year.
so what is a good price per quart for Mobil 1? I think thats what they stock.
$5

In a retail establishment or at a shop?
We run Mobil 1 synthetic in our cars. Synthetic oil makes me more comfortable with our cars' long recommended oil change intervals. (Oil changes occur at ~8-10k intervals.)
Our cars specifically recommend Mobil 1 synthetic in the owner's manuals. What does your Acura manual say?

Any brand mentioned in a owner's manual is purely there because the maker paid for it to be.....
Ducati used to have that Shell Advance sticker on the engine cover.
Do they even import that stuff?
How many miles are on it? Is it completely broken-in?
I'm 100% in favor of using synthetic, but only once an engine's got a few thou on it. Rings seat better with dino oil, and I've heard of plenty of folks pregnant doging about oil consumption if they switch to synthetic too soon.
Of course, breaking it in like you own it (not abusing it) goes a long way on any engine. ;)
All of my VW's in recent years have come with synthetic from the factory...

All VW's and Audi's take synthetic.
With the longer service intervals now days you really are better off spending the extra for synthetic. Mobile 1 would be just fine.
I was referring to speedbag's post about proper break in with dino oil...

I dont doubt it. It's taking me every fiber of my being to not badmouth the Ducati dealer that sold me the stuff. Not to mention those $31.50 sparkplugs. Thats each plug BTW.
Actually it took me great strength to not go balistic while at the shop. However, I needed the stuff as my scooter was not running. I did draw the line at 152 dollars for a battery. That I did find elsewhere for 80 dollars.
FWIW, I dont think I will ever by another thing from that dealership.
yes worth it
my jeep has 225,000 miles on it only synthetic ...also walmart's own brand is good a rebadge of mobil 1
So those saying yes to synthetic.....why?
What's the non-anecdotal proof that it's better?

You never read the oil thread on TOB?
George was one of them engineer types.
He said it was.
Uh-huh.

missed that one.
My understanding from George was that synthetics had much better lubricating properties that mineral oils.
Of course that is a very simple summary of what George said, but a good synopsis.

He also pointed out why dino oil addtization packages were less than ideal in extended mileage applications.
I think MrI is playing coy.

Georges info convinced me. Synthetics are purpose built from the ground up to do a specific job so it seems logical you'd have a better product. While I don't have a dino oil test to compare it to, I had a sample of Amsoil analyzed after 3000 miles in the Duc. It was basically still new with the exception of silica which George felt is the result of my K+N air filter.
I can send you the analysis if you want. ;D

It's slickerer.
I had it done at a Valvoline Oil Change- where i have been going for the last year since I moved up here. It was $69 for the full synthetic. Seems a bit steep- but I guess its the same as 2 - $35 dino oil changes. I am guessing the Acura dealer would have charged me between $80-$100 (plus the wait time).
I have just about 6k on the car right now. I'd say I broke it in pretty well. Its got a great sound when you push the pedal down- although not as nice as the sound of the Cayenne. (I had perma grin for about 30 minutes after test driving the V8 model). Not that I would ever have the ability to drive it like the pros- but they say it out-performed the Cayenne V6 and Audi Q7 on the track.
Yea, I'd be finding another dealership.
I use Rotella 15W-40 in the Monster
Quaker State liquid dinosaur goes in the '08 Impala & the '02 Dakota and gets changed out around 3,000 miles regardless of what that stupid dash computer says in the Impala.
Castrol GTX High-mileage goes in the Taurus w/ 176,000 miles
Oil related problems? ZERO

Not sure what you paid for it, but you shoulda gave the V8 Touareg some thought. The thing is a beast. I love it (although it's the wife's car)...

stickered at $41,900 got it for $34,200 at 2.9% We got the "basic" model. no Nav or power liftgate. Still loaded otherwise.
They are dealing on 08 Touaregs, but not that low...
FYI, Toureg & Porsche Cayenne are based on the same platform. Suspension on the Cayenne is specific to the Porsche due to it's ability to lean into corners, etc.

I install aftermarket gauges in all of our work vehicles, on the idea that you need to know what the engine/trans is doing BEFORE it blows up. Engine temp, trans temp, and engine oil pressure.
I was offered a deal on Amsoil products by a rep about 5 years ago, and put their synthetic fluids in all of our vehicles.
In our 2000 Dodge van, the engine temps went down 10 degrees, and oil pressure went up by @5 lbs. I was told that this was due to reduced friction.
In our 1997 Dodge Diesel, the transmission temps went from 175-180 to 155-160 in summer, under load.
Made me a believer.
