So you guys and gals might remember last year I did some major research and with the help of the DML I decided on a s2000
Well that car didn't work out for me for a few different reasons. I can go into details but I rather not bore you to death.
Well I am doing research again and now I am looking for something a little more rational to buy. Something that I would be happy as a daily driver, Throw 4 people into and possibly put a Baby chair in some day etc.
I want to keep the price under $20k
Two cars come to mind so far
Mazdaspeed3
(http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2397/2370480992_fd8a9fc141.jpg?v=0)
Subaru WRX STI - Not most recent model

Let the opinions fly!!! Have at it.
Both very fine choices. [evil]
But for 20Gs your going to have to buy used, and both are most likely going to be flogged pretty good.
B had an STI when we started dating, and I had have never had so much fun driving before. Turned like it was on rails and generally went way too fast. The only downside I would say, would have to be storage space. The trunk is fairly large, but the rear seats didn't fold down (for body stiffness reasons). And depending on how hard you stepped on the right pedal; mpgs sucked and HAD to take premium gas. Also the clothes line (wing) on the back likes to catch [leo].
The Speed3 has less power but is no slouch. Cargo space is much more useable being a hatch/wagon. IIRC it doesn't need premium fuel, and gets better mpgs. It also will attract less [leo] attention. More of a sleeper.
You will get a newer car for 20gs in the Speed3 (new 25-7Gs) as opposed to the STI (35-40Gs)
Good luck with your search. [thumbsup]
I would look for a Speed3.
If I went with a WRX STI I would get a 4 or 5 year old model to get between the 15k and 20k price range I have.
I think I can find one of those with not to many miles on it.
What I read is the Mazdaspeed3 beats it in almost every category but I like the looks of the WRX so much better than the Mazda.
does the mazda3 have all wheel drive? or is that even a concern?
Get the Subie, sell the wing to someone who wants the 'look'.
Why not add an EVO to the list?
If your into modding.. look for a early MK5 GTI, should be around 18-20k.
few mods and they are impressive. Re-flash runs about $500 and will give you 50HP more.
we built one for a customer, with minor mods (intake/exhaust, stg II flash, cooler plugs), 240HP and 280ft/lbs on the ground. It now has a larger intercooler, and different down pipe but hasn't been on the dyno since. He's waiting for a new higher pressure fuel pump and re-flash before getting back to the dyno.
$1200 on suspension and it will out handle the others with ease.
this, your probably not going to find any under 20k..
but, worth a look, as handling is very impressive and they don't run to bad either..
I have the forester. It has a lot of the same features as the wrx (and if you REALLY want to shop, there's an Australian and Japanese model Forester that is STi). If you got the Forester XT, you'd have a lot of the same benefits to the WRX, it looks more like a wagon, has cargo space and isn't quite as fast. It might be a good compromise between the two. (Edit: avoid the newest foresters - they're trucks, not cars. Also avoid the first three model years due to notorious head leaks. If you get an 04-08 XT on the road, you'll probably like it if you like the WRX).
But I'd go with the Subaru.
i have a 2007 STI limited (no ricer wing). its loud in every possible way ... road noise, wind
noise, engine noise, and lots of mechanical clunks etc usually associated with the limited
slip differentials. it takes premium, gets crappy gas mileage (never better than 22), and had
some well known issues ... strut clunk, soft rotors, weak ring lands. that beiing
said, i really like it. it goes like a scared cat, especially with a few carefully selected
engine mods. like my dad used to say, "it'll pass everything on the road except a gas
station." i've had junior squids want to 'street race' with the mazdaspeed3, but
we all know that's illegal. i personally don't like the way front wheel drive feels, especially
in a powerful car, which the speed3 definately is. the mazda is probably a little more refined.
the subaru is really a rally car which has been somewhat civilized. its got lots of raw edges
and irritating quirks.
in the end, probably down to personal preference, although most of the used STIs i've
seen have been pretty severly trashed ... something to be very careful of. you also don't want
one which has been modified. its very easy to make things worse, especially in the longevity
department.
Check out a Subaru Legacy GT. Lotsa HP for the turbo (250 or so I think), AWD, heated leather seats for wifey's tush, and tight German-like handing. More fun that a standard WRX (non STI) IMO.

One of those is on the short list for the next daily driver.....
As I mentioned in the previous thread and mentioned by Johnny OrganDonor, the Legacy GT. Same engine as STI, but down rated, all wheel drive. I test drove an 05 5sdp, and it's much more refined than that sti.
Also mentioned are the VWs. Find a Golf with all wheel, possibly in a four door (i don't know if they come in that combo). It won't be as fast as a STI or EVO, but less brash and more of a sleeper. You can also get the Passat with all wheel, but I doubt its very sporty.
No, the Passat isn't very sporty, but it is a peppy car with a good amount of go. My mom has an '06 or '07 and it's very nice driving. Very nice appointments, even on the lower lines. Fit and finish is very nice too. Handles well, but isn't an STi or similar.

Subaru impreza WRX STİ Ken Block (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5Vjpu8P09A#lq-lq2-hq-vhq)
OK, they are hard to find, but the Saab 9-2x Aero is what I would buy - the so-called Saabaru WRX. I think they look better than the WRXes of the same model year, they have some more sound dampening, making for a slightly more refined ride. They didn't sell many, and they don't really appeal to the boy racers shopping for a used WRX, so from what I have seen resale prices are a bit lower. If you can find one.

We had a 2007 Passat with the 2.0T. It was nice, reasonably quick and you should be able to find an 07 for less than 20. Not sure about the 3.6 as far as price, but the engine is beefier...

I've seen a few used ones around for 16-18k..
may not be as fast as the japanse cars, but significantly more refined and a hell of a lot better looking.. Again, same engine as the GTI (2.0 fsi) so any simple mods will give it much better power. If you want all wheel drive, a 05-06 A4 with the 2.0fsi will fall into your price range.
I'll say it again. The whole deal is an exercise in futility. Nothing will compare to the acceleration. braking, and handling of the monster. You'll only get a car that feels inadequate by comparison. You want it for comfy driving-just go get a dang lincoln towncar with heated everything.

most fun i've ever had on four wheels.
you could go balls out and get the new S-GP:

Not to mention with the 2.0T you can chip it for 500 bucks and get about another 45-50hp reliably on pump gas, also adds about 60ft-lbs of tq...

That's why I am looking for a 4 seater now ;)
I am not looking for a car to replace my Monster but something that can take few work folks to lunch and or carry a Baby seat some day but still be sporty enough to take it for a Tomales Bay run.
Maybe check out the last generation BMW 3 series. Great handling cars with good steering feel and RWD, plus plenty comfy.
Downside is, just like Ducati, maintenance runs a bit more expensive.

I just saw a JCW Cooper S and I really liked the way it looked. I'm still holding out for a Fiat 500 SS, but if they never import it, a JCW may have to get some consideration.
I have a 07 VW rabbit. $15k, brand new, out the door.
It will be replaced with the next GTI coming out....I can't believe I ended up one of them, but I'm a VW fanboy [bang]
I have owned 3 Jetta's, 1 Passat and now a Touareg. I love VW's...

sorry for the crappy vid quality..
we built this one for a customer, 355 HP/ 280 torque on the ground. this dyno didn't do it justice, rollers were too light for correct load so it took too long to spool.. who says you can't have fun in a car.. [evil] BTW this is on pump gas, way he drives it every day 17psi.
Its actually back in, getting some more work. were gonna up build it up a bit for more power (in this vid its only lower compression and big injectors), try and reach for 19-20 psi and 400 on the ground, hopefully with out blowing it up ;D
I tried to talk him into bigger brakes.. but he wants more power, and the customer's allways right.. (I won't get in the damn thing, unless I'm driving [laugh] )

I just got a Golf 4 door 2.sl0w 5sdp. My credit wasn't good enough for the car I really wanted. But I think my VW suits me.

Do you have any good places for tech data on these cars. I want to learn as much as possible about them.

all I know of right now is a chip and exhaust for a bit more performance. I sell Revo software, and swear by it.. its pretty smooth, and we've even seen increases in fuel mileage with them.
just be glad you got the v8.. the v6 was great in the R32, but not nearly enough for the reg'.

IMO, it's hard to find a better-handling 4-seater car than a BMW 3-series. Late model examples (2- and 4-door) can easily be found with low miles for under $20k. You can even find 530i models for under $20k.
If you're eventually gonna have a baby seat in this car, you'll need a sedan and not a coupe. Trust me.
The EVO is a far more moddable platform.
Handles better
Easier to work on/fix
Cheaper to mod
And the HP to mod/$ factor is SIGNIFICANLTY cheaper than a suby.
Mitsu>Subi
+1 on the EVO over the WRX STI, newer or older models... Also, since you mentioned the Mazdaspeed 3 hatchback... check out the Mazdaspeed 6 four door. Those things are FAST and they look way nicer that the speed 3's IMO. Let us know what you decide.
Okay I added the VW GTI + chip so basically the 250hp GTI to my list
I didn't realize how well the GT handled. Fifth gear did a comparison with the new WRX.
Now generally I don't care for Fifth gear. I much prefer Top Gear so I take there reviews with a grain of salt.
GTI vs. WRX 5th Gear Shootout (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MzB6C1MquLI#lq-lq2-hq-vhq)
So guys tell me more about the Evo =) Remember under 20k is the price =)
EVO > STI ??? not IMHO. EVO is a derivative car ... front drive econobox with the rear drive cobbed on
as an afterthought. it has a front biased torque split and drives like a front drive car.
Could be a deal maker here... the BMW's and the MINI all come with a 3 year full-service package.. Everything but tires is included. Oil, brakes, wiper blades... everything is free... it's pretty nice.

As a independed shop owner, I see it as screwing with the market.
they can still take their vehicle places other then the dealer... but they already paid for the dealer to have the services done.
FWIW, I have customers who bring me their vehicles, even though they have the "free" services because its much less of a pain then the dealer and they know it will be done right. ;D
Maybe BMW shops are better. I was nervous about my fiancée taking her new Impala to the dealer for service. I'd have probably been more had it been a nice new BMW or something ~

I just sold an older beemer that I did most of my own work on. I had to make several trips to the BMW parts dept. I hated it every time. I'll just say there brain waves crash a little short of the beach. ;)
Never had my car serviced there. I replaced my clutch master and had a question, and not one of the techs had ever done that job before. The BMW dealer even would call a local independent beemer guy to ask him questions. And my car had been to this BMW guru, and even he f up my car.
Sure you get a warm IZ_ by having a maintenance package with the dealer, but don't bank on them doin anything right.

I don;t, but if you don't, and/or can;t do your own work, it's a lot more fuzzt knowing that for once if you do have to bring it back six times, it's not on your dime, at all.

have had no such issue with the mini.
i could cowboy the car into a curb and snap a cv joint.
they would repair it under warranty.
i could ride around with the hand brake on, they would replace rear brake pads and calipers (if they didnt burst into flames haha) under maintenance.
no questions asked. it's all inclusive. and yes i DID read the fine print on the contract.
Our experience taking the Mini into Mini/BMW Sacramento service was one of the best dealership experiences I have ever had (sales was excellent too)
(2nd only to Ducati Seattle of course ;))
might be worth checking out service dept in advance
not sure if i would consider the cooper a 4-seater unless your rear passengers are children, or midgets like me or spidey

when it comes to making money in service, customer pay is way more then warranty (which doesn't pay for shit) and abuse is always customer pay.
I'm not saying nothing bad about mini's... I've seriously considered one and was litteraly on my way to test drive one for shits giggle and maybe to buy when I got into a major car accident.. (truck blew a light and smashed my moms A4 to bits, we both walked away, the people in the truck were taken unconcious.. she got another A4 FWIW)
but I wouldn't bet you can do anything you want to the car and have them pay for it. There are good dealers out there but thats just rediculose.
If a sales man told you that you could do that.. DONT. they will do and say anything to make a sale.
VW has 3 years "free" service now too.
FWIW....my VW dealer has been nothing but great....except it's a little pricier than some places (mine was bought before the free service deal they have now). They've been wonderful, however the VW dealer that is much closer to my house (90 miles closer actually) is total shit. complete. utter. shit.
Okay I added the Evo to my list as well. It seems to kick some serious arse on Top Gear
Now which one ??? 8 9 or 10
10 is going to be out of my price range for a while most likely.
I think I have made my decision.
Time to come up with the Money though =)
I think this is more than enough car for me and someday I can put a baby seat in the back [thumbsup]

Car still ran, and she was fine.
Well it does have a 5 star crash rating [thumbsup]
I like the looks of the WRX STI wagon much better than the sedan. Plus, you get a little extra room. I have a 2000 Subaru Impreza Outback, have loved it. Has 120,000 miles on it and the engine feels bulletproof. Only expensive maintenance was the timing belt change. Of course, it isn't turbo charged. But it has been a really good car to me. Would love to get a new WRX STI wagon, but premium gas hurts the wallet, as well as the $40K sticker price. :o
Congrats Rob. [thumbsup]

I can throw a Baby seat in the car... Not that I have a ankle biter yet
I can easily be a family car during the week or a car for the twisties over the weekend.
It has a 5 star crash rating
Insurance is cheap
Its sporty but not to much so it doesnt grab attention from cops
I can go on and on and on
Very practical. I'm not at all, my iniquity. Nice ride Rob, enjoy, but boost that baby!

The scooby fit my needs pretty well. Yeah I sacrificed a little performance but its really a minor difference compared to most of the other cars out there in the same price range that are two seaters. I mean who drives their car to the limit on public roads anyways... I dont and there for I dont need that extra second I am going to get off a lap time on a track and yeah I did crunch the numbers =)
I can fit 5 people in it.
I can drive in in Wet weather with out worrying to much
I can take it up to the snow

Well hell, now I kinda want one.
Also, see? I told you he was smart.
The honda odessy is a nice, you can fit like 7 people and store all that stuff. Plus it is the best handling Mini-van out there.
Delima over so please [bow_down]

I thought it was Lexus's answer to a "tuner car"
guess I was wrong.
carry on.
It is. Some answers are better than others [cheeky]
Rob, how does the STI drive compared to your old S? I will say that the Subie is one car that I have considered as a potential replacement for my S as well, assuming I go the car route...

You make a nice case, Rob. Maybe I should trade in the S2K.
And congrats.
Hmm compared to the S2000
They are very different cars. The stock numbers on paper have the STI and the S2000 closely matched other than the 0 to 60 times. On the track it would come down to the driver.
08 Subaru WRX STI
0 to 60 4.8
60 to 0 braking 106 feet
Slalom 72.4mph
Skidpad .94
05 S2000
0 to 60 5.8
60 to 0 braking 110 feet
Slalom 70.4
Skidpad .95
As you can see the numbers are really close with these both cars. The big difference is the Scooby is much more forgiving with driver error :) and in the S2000 Is for dry weather only if you are going to flog it.
The Scooby feels much more planted in and out of corners but the S2000 has a much better feel for the road.
The Scooby will tell you when its near it's limits. The S2000 tail will wave to you when it's at it's limits :)
The S2000 didn't inspire confidence when I drove it. I could never get over how tail happy that car was and it frankly scared me. Granted I did not know how to drive it properlly.
In short the S2000 is a true sports car for the skilled driver which is not me.
Dude. I think the car for you would be between a Toyota Prius or a Bugatti Veyron.
ever considered a used cadillac cts-v?

I was actually considering one of these.
it will be my next car, probably about 10 years in the future....the 2009 version is better, faster, stronger, and more nimble! My buddy works for a dealership in the area and he said that it was the car that was in for service the least amount in the past 6ish years
My next vehicle will be a pickup, so that I don't need to steal anyone else's bike trailer. After that I was thinking about a sporty sedan. The CTS-V was already at the top of the list.
i hear ya on the pickup......if only the wifey would approve both

The bed on a truck is taller than you
[laugh] [laugh]
Why not just buy a bike trailer?
It's just funny to see Truck's in south florida. Make sure to go with the super duty package and 4wd for all the snow.
4X2, but I do want to diesel. I have no place to keep the trailer and the Siena is not really made for towing. I would rather just put the bike on the bed. I'm still waiting for someone to make a smaller diesel, hopefully in the next 3 years. I know Ford and Toyota were talking about coming out with diesel F-150 and Tundras.
Should I change this to the best handling truck thread :P
That's an oximoron, but the CTS-V would have been within the budget and a really cool car.

not that I can afford a CTS-V right now,
but,
I'm holding out hope for a CTS-V wagon. The CTS wagon is there...it just needs the engine. That would be the ultimate children hauler (with space for fido in the back).

Dude? Really?
What's wrong with an IS300?? Next Gen 2JZ... Rear wheel drive. Pretty nice as far as style is concerned... did I miss something?
A decent IS300 will run you more than 20K. They're good cars, but you're either going to have to pay to play or buy one off some kid that beat the crap out of it.

Cayman's are going crazy low lately, heard in the ATL area in the $25K range. You want something that handles, feels likethe hand of God, look no further. I do have a place in my heart for Subby's. Mazda, not so much, ex-wife had an MP3 built by Racing Beat, very problematic. It's a Ford!
for shit and giggles I looked up the specs for the Porsche Caymen. The one you linked is the non S version. Actually the 2008 WRX STI beats it in all category's [thumbsup]

Lotus Evora... one sitting in our local Ducati dealer... 4 seater... although that back seat is best suited for kids under 5... as the seats don't account for legs. ;D
