Painted it and Voila! nice to see someone put it to good use :) Title: Re: Modded Belt covers Post by: Goldeneye on May 17, 2008, 04:25:51 AM I was thinking about removing the belt covers completely.
Any issues I should be aware of? Stones, debris? I think the exposed belts compliment the open clutch nicely. Title: Re: Modded Belt covers Post by: El Matador on May 17, 2008, 08:23:33 AM Nope... Title: Re: Modded Belt covers Post by: toaster on May 17, 2008, 12:36:41 PM i figure that if im riding without the covers, and something gets in there and breaks it, its just Gods way of telling me i need to upgrade. what better reason to upgrade than breaking something. its almost always cheaper to upgrade than it is to replace it with stock factory replacements.

I'm trying to go for a mate black look. I have no experience painting. Would you recommend I take it to a paint shop. Or could I practice with a few stuff and then do my belt covers? Title: Re: Modded Belt covers Post by: Scooter Montgomery on May 29, 2008, 12:36:09 PM I used satin black for plastic, I think I bought it at home depot. Do you have any problems with the plexiglass melting, warping or getting dirty? Title: Re: Modded Belt covers Post by: Scooter Montgomery on June 01, 2008, 09:49:34 AM I love the clear looking covers. Do you have any problems with the plexiglass melting, warping or getting dirty? The one on the right has a little trouble with cracking at the screws that hold the Lexan in place, not as bad as the plexiglass that I used, but still had some small cracks. They were small enough at on the bike you wouldn't notice them at all. The one on the left I glued in place with high temp rtv. Tempurature wise they are fine, no problems. The only other problem was the main center pulley just barely rubs, but I figure it will just were down the lexan and fit perfect. If I had put a small washer behind the cover it wasn't have touched at all. Bob Title: Re: Modded Belt covers Post by: IdZer0 on June 01, 2008, 11:55:45 AM What's the thickness of the Lexan you used ? Last year I asked around for scratch and heat resistant Lexan, but the thinnest I could find was 3mm. I can't imagine having that much room in there, so didn't go ahead with this mod.
Title: Re: Modded Belt covers Post by: Scooter Montgomery on June 01, 2008, 01:30:03 PM I used 3 mm (1/8"). It was the thinest I could find.
Title: Re: Modded Belt covers Post by: tangueroHondo on June 01, 2008, 05:38:43 PM I have 05 S2R. I am surprised that the company would make stock belt and sprocket covers that look so shitty. Who in the design department created this nonsense? And then, they roll a pre-production model off the line and nobody stares at it saying,"What in the f**k kind of shit is that covering the belts and sprocket?" "Did those come from Buell?"

Title: Re: Modded Belt covers Post by: thejsnide on June 27, 2008, 07:37:52 PM How thick is the stock cover (seems pretty thin) and what did most of you use to cut it?
Title: Re: Modded Belt covers Post by: Super T.I.B on June 28, 2008, 12:11:44 AM It would be around 4mm, 1/4 inch thick.
I used a coping saw with a fine blade to cut it. Title: Re: Modded Belt covers Post by: m9hundo on June 28, 2008, 06:51:02 AM This was post was on TOB so I'll put it up on the new board. I love the pantah covers but they wouldn't fit my 900 as they were. So I stretched them out ;)

Title: Re: Modded Belt covers Post by: psycledelic on June 28, 2008, 04:33:24 PM That's the tits! Where did you get that screen? The screen is TPO Hyperscreen. It is for replacing stock screening on full fairing bikes to let more air in. I think I bought it through Ebay. Yea, I went ahead and hooked the heat shields up because I am to cheap to drop $60 on Carbon. I did my front sprocket cover also. Total cost was only $35. Screen, paint, and epoxy. More beer money!EDIT: I dig that you put some in the heat guards for the exhaust, too. Title: Re: Modded Belt covers Post by: BastrdHK on June 29, 2008, 07:50:02 AM I like the mod! Buddy, has billet rizoma covers on his m750, and the lexan has cracked where it attaches due to vibration.
Only pulley that would catch debris is the horizontal cylinder's gear driven(middle) pulley. At the speed the assembly rotates, it would be more likely to "kick" debris than drag it in. Think a roulette wheel rotating very fast! I run sans covers myself 8) Title: Re: Modded Belt covers Post by: thejsnide on June 29, 2008, 01:17:00 PM So I removed my belt covers today and I have to say that the look is great... One thing I noticed though, while I was doing this I was thinking about taking off the emissions canister. So I started looking at it, following the hoses when I noticed that the two fatter hoses were NOT connected to anything... Did I knock them off removing the cover? Do I need to reconnect these hoses before I ride, basically can this mess anything up. I have not noticed that they were disconnected until today, and I imagine that it has been like this for a while. Guess it's time to remove the emission canister too.

Title: Re: Modded Belt covers Post by: jamanta on August 28, 2009, 05:51:01 PM Finally got around doing my belt covers! They were the ugly gray ones....
I first cut them with my handisaw in the shape i wanted (simple, nothing fancy), filed and sanded it down to make the edges smooth then cleaned very well. Sanded with a medium grit sandpaper and applied a coat of plastic primer. i chose to use the Duplicolor high temperature spray paint and applied 2 nice light coats to it, up to then the coats were perfect but when I did the third coat, the paint was coming out flaky and left the surface rough. I ended up having to wet sand it with a 600 grit paper and repainted with a Rust-Oleum medium gloss paint. Also ordered a TPO honeycomb screen and cut it to shape and attached it to the cover using Gorilla brand epoxy. Used a blow dryer to cure it and not it is tough as nails! Installed the covers on the bike yesterday and couldn't help but smile! It made the bike look cool and meaner, costing me around $20!!! This is my first mod ever and I'm very happy with the results! Title: Re: Modded Belt covers Post by: mcdamike on August 29, 2009, 10:52:42 PM my 2 cents
I had my belt cover completely removed for 2 months. Then rust started to form all over the places. Did look pretty at all. So, I first had to clean up the dirt and rust as best as I can, then I use heat resistant black paint to go over the cover and slap those bad boys on again. The heat, rain, water, will speed up the corrosion of the parts. So I think its better not to expose them to the element. |
