Title: Gardening
Post by: Got Duc on May 25, 2009, 06:01:17 PM
Alright I know I am not the only one here so...

What did you plant?

Why?

Anything out of the ordinary?

I planted some Tomatoes and Lettuce today along with the Govt plating flowers in her flower beds.

Will put in a proper garden during the week I am thinking

I do.  Mine is more flowers than veggies though.  I do the veggies with my parents since I've got a half-acre and they've got something like 30 acres.

Veggies I grow in pots:

Several varieties of pepper - Cubanelle, Cayenne, Ancho, Thai, Hot Red Cherry
'Maters - Usually a couple Roma plants and one or two slicing varieties like Big Boy or Better Boy.
Herbs - Basil, Mint, Italian Parsley

In ground:
Pumpkins, Watermelons, Squash, Cucumber and Zucchini

I'm currently working on getting two different varieties of grapes going.  No clue what types as the man that planted the vines my seedlings came from nearly 40 years ago left us several years ago.  They're three seasons old and needing a support structure & are ready to be pruned into shape.  There's even a couple bunches on one plant.

Perennials:

Flowering:  Yucca, Canna Lillies, Calla Lillies, Lillies, Clematis, Glads, Cherry Bush, Peruvian Daffodils (awesome bloom), Butterfly Bushes, Hostas, "Old" Poppy, Roses, Stoneflower, Stonecrop, Pieris, and Tigre-somethings.

Starting some Foxlove, Bells of Ireland, Lupine and Carnations this year too.  We'll see if they do anything.
Herbs:  Sage, Oregano, Rosemary, Catnip

I think that's all ~

We've planted/are planting

Tomatoes
Peas
Potatoes
Blueberries
Red raspberries
Rhubarb
Strawberries
Parsnips
Beans
Basil
Coriander
Butternut Squash
Lettuce
Broccoli
Radishes
Carrots
Cucumber
Brussel Sprouts
Peppers
A nectarine tree

As far as why-because fresh fruit and veg is delicious. Except for the Brussel Sprouts and radishes-my wife is weird.

I wish I had land to plant on, but since I'm on the 4th floor, I'm going to be planting some herbs in a pot on the fire escape, and in the kitchen windowsill.  There's nothing like garden-fresh tomatoes fresh off the vine.  Wish I had room to plant some.
Title: Re: Gardening
Post by: Howie on May 26, 2009, 04:59:41 AM
From seed:

San Marzano tomatoes
Marglobe tomatoes
Cubanelle peppers
Zucchini
Kirby cukes
Haricot Verte
Parsley
Basil
Mesclun
Arugula

And, since they are perennial:

Thyme
Rosemary
Sage
Chives

Decorative stuff:

Besides the perennials, magnolia tree, and mystery evergreen, the usual assortment of annuals.

Not bad for Da Bronks, huh?

If I could only gain control of the squirrels and my neighbor's weed farm all would be good.

No kidding.  I grow the stuff around to make salsa all summer long.  That's why there's all the peppers, Roma tomatoes & herbs.  I usually grow some Cilantro, but haven't tossed the seeds out yet ~

last year i had a garden... the deer ate the whole thing  :-\
i had two of these motion detector sprinklers that act as a scarecrow.
they worked great until the batteries died on one, and POOF... the garden was gone.

this is a busy summer, so i want to plant a couple of patio pots with 'maters and basil.

I have two raised beds in my yard.

Bed #1 - tomatoes, lettuce, spinach, jalapeno peppers

Bed#2 - two types of beans, cucumbers, bell peppers, and broccoli

And I have assorted flowers in flower pots all over the yard.

Troy-bilt  PONY

When I got it from my uncle about 4 years ago it was sitting behind a shed with a cover on it. MY uncle said it was there for 10 years or so. He never started it.

I took it home cleaned it up. I knew there was an old bees nest inside it somewhere.

I pulled three times on the pull start and it fired right up.

This time had newer type fuel and I couldn't believe it started after it sat for so long with the new garbage gas.

Today I will run out all the gas and put it back in storage for another year.

I've been helping out a friend that has a huge green house at his place.  It's about a hundred feet long and maybe 35-45 feet wide.  We have things growing in all sorts of different systems.  He has one tomato in a hydroponic system that looks like it could get up and walk away on it's own.  The tomatos are HUGE.  We are working on getting the pond up and running so we can put the fish back in it.  We have six raised beds out side with both veggies and flowers. A zone has just cacti. He has a blood orange tree.  Some other fruit trees, lemon, lime, etc.

Some of the stuff we are growing:

A couple variates of tomatos
Spicy, sweet, and purple basil
Leeks
Onions
Garlic
Red, orange, and yellow bell peppers
Jalapanos
Serrano peppers
A couple types of lettuce
Strawberries
Blue Berries
Black Berries
Broccoli
Corn
Brussel sprouts
Beets
Peas
Potatoes
Watermelon
Cantalope
Cilantro
Parsely

I don't know the list goes on from there.  I'm headed out there in in the next few days so I'll get some pics.

I don't have any land to plant on, but I've got a patio and trying out some container gardening.  Current inventory is cucumbers, scallions, early girl and cherry tomatoes, red peppers, basil, dill and oregano.  I have enough oregano to last 6 lifetimes.  Also trying some melons in a small strip of dirt by the patio.

Next season I'm going to try larger containers to get larger fruit.  Right now everything is tiny.

Tomatoes, dry beans and peppers are doing pretty well here in the AZ highlands, though every day I've got my fingers crossed for our summer monsoon rains to really kick in. Two days of hard rain right before Independence Day, then nothing -- our main rainwater tank is almost empty AGAIN.

The squash plants had a profusion of blossoms about a week ago, but nothing much yet -- which means in a couple of weeks we're going to be up to our asses in summer squash. Sweet corn looks good so far, but it's mighty thirsty. Almonds would have been nice, but I don't think we're going to get any fruit to set this year, and the two year old peach tree looks well and thoroughly dead, killed by some early season blight.

The biggest disappointment this year are climbing beans -- we built a cool trellis out of old downhill skis, but it doesn't look nearly as good as I'd hoped without bean vines climbing all over it.

This was taken about a month ago when the plant was about a month old. It's two feet taller now and we've had to thin it out a bunch so it's not quite as cool to look at.

Got some blight on my tomatoes  :(   Picked off all the bad leaves, but I think it will still spread.  Too wet and cool here this year for tomatoes.  We have not broke 90 yet in July - that is a record.  Our first tomatoes don't have the typical home grown tomato taste.  The peppers are doing well though.
