She needs to go....
If a medic and a person that claims to have been involved in that field can't get said person to the ER, I don't know what to tell you.
I'm IOD at the moment as well. I refused medics day one but not on day two. Maybe you will have better luck tomorrow. [thumbsup]

Screw that, hospitals are _dangerous_ places, they're full of _sick people_ and overworked underpaid staff who'll administer drugs or _cut you open_ on less than an hours sleep a night (on the orders of insurance company owned "administrators" with little more then highschool education)!!! Personally I avoid them unless I can't get my own bones back inside my skin...
Be strong JBub! Don't let Mother expose you to swine flu or golden staph!

Yikes. Here's hoping the ER visit is a waste, and that it's Jess who gets to say the told-ya-sos.
Best wishes for a good outcome.

we are back from the ER
No broken bones and no obvious internal injuries
but some seriously tore up muscles
Time and followups will tell that story in full
She is sleeping and does NOT like Percocet
She has some rash on her (L) arm and (L) flank
Swelling in the trapezius where it meets the scapula

in the erector where it meets the gluteous medius
She will be in pain for some time

Definitely squidish. I was working the horse into a couple of corners that he was spooking at in the outdoor arena. We spent 40 minutes walking into them (and spooking), worked up to trotting into them, and on the first canter into one he went into bucking bronc mode. I hung on for the first one but lost my grip on the second.
I think I didn't do well on the percs cause the guy gave me two. I have a low tolerance for pain killers and it messed me up royally. I don't plan on taking anything stronger than the prescription ibuprofen he gave me but we'll see how that goes tonight when I try to sleep.
I wish someone had been taking pictures or videotaping, I'm sure it was a spectacular get off. I'm sure I could have gotten an 8 or 9 on the landing.

has anyone ever seen a dog on downers?
they are trying so hard to stay awake but their inner eyelids are half closed
Jess was in that state for a good 30 minutes
trying as hard as she could to fight the percocet
she lost in the end but put up a good battle
2 of those things makes me buggier than Ford EFi and I've got 130 lbs on her
If you get an upset stomach with pain meds, eat a little bit of food before hand and call your doctor and ask for a drug called Promothezine (might have spelled that wrong).
It helps with nausea associated with pain meds.
Heal up fast! At the risk of sounding like a broken record (this is the third time I've recommended this) topical Arnica is an herbal that is great for pain and clears up bruises fast. Also gives Mother something fun to do with all the rubbing (gentle rubbing).

They're the same thing, only better made.
Cork footbed, leather lined, leather sole, leather/rubber heel. And because I was born with skis where my feet should have been, the fact that they come in narrow widths means that I can buy a pair in 13 B and they'll fit like they were made for me.
Plus, as cyrus pointed out, the A-E guys can refurbish them when the time comes and extend the life for another 10 years or so.

at a dealers halloween party we set up a bicycle on the dyno and did a few runs. I topped at 9.5.
i think the winner hit 11HP.
1 hp isn't all that much - so I could see a human being able to put out a few HP at peak - for a short term. But for sustained effort, we are lacking.
Some horses have been observed to put out double digit hp for brief peaks...

Well that kinda make the beast with two backss with the whole idea of using a horse as a standardizing measure

if my memory of the 80s is any good (ha) we did some highschool physics fun tests with running up stairs and calculating hp with weight and height. people did maybe a quarter to a third hp. some of the jocks got close to 1/2. any current math geeks think that sounds right? any health geeks think that sounds right? I don't remember that time with too much accuracy. it was a short sprint thing.
IIRC, and it's been a while since I looked at this myself...
Pro bicyclists, specifically sprinters, could pull .5 - .75 or so for very short periods.
Max was about .25 for any reasonable period of time, like a couple minutes.
That's what I remember from respectable scientific periodicals back in the day, early 80's.
Current reference.
About a third of the way down the page:
http://www.palmbeachbiketours.com/2008/10/27/man-versus-bike-versus-horse-100-miles-to-go/ (http://www.palmbeachbiketours.com/2008/10/27/man-versus-bike-versus-horse-100-miles-to-go/)
"An average cyclist in good shape can produce 200 watts for hours at a time.
A top-level professional cyclist can generate 500 watts.
All else being equal, a horse produces two to four times more horsepower than a cyclist."
1 HP = 746 watts
So that would be .27 HP and .67 HP.
IMO, when they say 'average cyclist' they don't mean the average schmoe on a bicycle, they mean average for those who do it as a serious hobby.
I don't know why we (the US) decided to come up with our own system.
The Britt's had it right.

I think it's a little higher than that, I remember the Gossamer Albatross, which flew across the English Channel under pedal power, required 500W to climb off the ground, and 300W to maintain level flight, which it needed to maintain for almost 3 hours for the channel crossing...
<google google google>
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gossamer_Albatross (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gossamer_Albatross)
not heaps of detail there tho... Does indicate a top level cyclist can maintain at least 300W for 3 hours.
The wikipedia has a nice historical summary of he "horsepower" here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horsepower (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horsepower)
which includes:
"Most observers familiar with horses and their capabilities estimate that Watt was either a bit optimistic or intended to under promise and over deliver; few horses can maintain that effort for long. Regardless, comparison to a horse proved to be an enduring marketing tool."

Cool, something more recent and reliable than my memory. [laugh]
Seems Mr. Watt was guesstimating a bit.
Horses are very low rpm, so the torque is huge. :P
I've ridden very few horses, but even the most average ones were pretty wicked on acceleration.

I thought that was only true for Mr Ed?

i've never understood HP. I get the idea of torque but HP is voodoo. how can a diesel motor make 1500 lbs/ft of torque and a gas motor make 350 lbs/ft of torque and both make 500 HP?
The real problem on the horse is the suspension.

Diesel motors are generally low rpm, compared to gasoline motors of the same size.
Principally due to using really high compression ratios, and the cylinder pressure at ignition is pretty severe.
Parts are beefy and heavy, so that's a hindrance to running at high rpm.
I haven't seen any of the power/torque info on latest racing diesels, or even hot production automotive stuff, that'd be some interesting numbers.

"Horsepower is a function of torque," was how I'd heard it said, but that didn't make sense to me, either. Wikipedia's articles on
torque (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torque) and
horsepower (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horsepower) have waaay too much information, but
this article (http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/2215/whats-the-difference-between-horsepower-and-torque) at The Straight Dope is much more helpful and Englishy, even with the graphs and equations missing.
Basically, given the torque (in lb-ft) and RPM of an engine, you can find the horsepower produced.
Torque x RPM
---------------- = HP
5252
torque is force times distance
horsepower is, uh, power
power is force applied in a distance over time
so engines that spin faster at the same torque output (force * distance) are producing more power because the torque is being applied more often.
layman's terms...
seems like that would be more power applied to make torque
torque makes the power, not the other way around
power is just torque integrated over time
Quote from: Mother on June 30, 2009, 09:38:56 PM

Torque is just how hard it can push - the fact that it's rotating complicates the understanding, ignore that for a minute and treat "torque" as "force". You can push your bike (or a wheelbarrow or a horse) with 1lb of force and it'll barely move, or you can push it with 200lbs of force and it'll start accelerating - the less weight and friction the faster it'll accelerate.
Now think about what happens as the bike speeds up - when it's doing walking pace, you can probably still apply 200lbs of force. when it gets to a jog, or a fast jog, you'll be unable to push it that hard anymore - the amount of force you're applying drops as the speed increases. By the time you hit running speed, the amount of force you can apply drops even further, and at a fast run you won't be able to apply any force to the bike at all.
"Power" is a measure of how much force you can apply at a particular speed. Anybody with enough strength can push against a wall at 200lbs, but without anything moving, no "work" is being done, and no "power" is being used. If you can push 200lbs at 1 foot per second, thats 200 foot pounds per second. If you get to 20 feet per second and were still able to push at 200lbs, that'd be 40,000 foot pounds per second. But you wont, because 20 feet per second is ~13mph which is a pretty fast run (it's _almost_ a 4 minute mile) - if you can even get that fast, you won't have anything "left over" to push the bike with. 40,000 foot pounds per second, as it turns out, is about what a 900 monster can do. By convention, people decided to call 550 foot pounds per second "1 horsepower", so 40,000 foot pounds is ~72hp. That same ~72hp Monster can only provide 100lbs of "push force" at 400 feet per second(26mph) or 50 lbs of force at 800 feet per second (52mph). (and as the speed goes up, you need to share the available "force" between overcoming air resistance and making the bike go faster - thats why you can't keep going and say "at 1600fps it can push 25lbs and at 3200fps it can push 12.5lbs", cause 12.5lbs isn't enough force to overcome air resistance as 216mph - unless you're on Randalls 620, anyway...) That also shows why the gear you're in doesn't matter - in 1st gear the engine provides a lot of force, but it'll only get up to 40 or 50mph or so before running out of puff. In top gear it'll go around 3 times faster than that, but with only 1/3rd of the force - which is why it accelerates so much slower in 6th - half the force at twice the speed is exactly the same "power" as twice the force at half the speed or 1/3rd the force at 3 times the speed.
Getting back to torque from force: Torque can be translated directly into tractive force by multiplying the gear ratios (primary drive ~2:1, gear ratios of say 3:1 in 1st down to ~1:1 in 6th, and final drive at ~3:1) and then dividing by the wheel radius, so the ~55 foot pounds of torque a 2 valve 900 makes turns into 990 foot pounds at the wheel (55*2*3*3) which with a rear wheel radius of really close to 1 foot means peak torque provides ~990lbs of force in 1st gear, or 1/3rd of that in top gear. That happens at ~6750rpm, which is 375rpm at the wheel in 1st (6750/2/3/3) or 1125rpm in 6th. So 990lbs of force at 375rpm on a 1 foot diameter wheel is 2*pi*1foot * 375rpm =~ 2355 feet per minute or 39 feet per second (2355/60).That gives us ~39000 foot pounds per second (39*990) - In top gear we'd get 330lbs of force at 1125rpm, which is _also_ ~39000 foot pounds per second (we just divided the force by 3 and multipled the speed by 3 to get the same number). 39000, divided by that "550 foot pounds per second = 1 hp" I told you about above, gives us ~71hp - woot, my numbers all make sense!
Hmmm, I've spent way too long on this post - hope it helps _somebodies_ understanding...

The real problem on the horse is the suspension.
If you look at JBub's incident, the primary problem is one of controls - the throttle and brakes lack feel and accuracy, while the fueling is far from smooth.
And +1 on pics [evil]

I also hear they have terrible emissions problems from that fueling. Don't stand behind one when the start up.
there was a pic last night, all pretty and blue and purple and yellow
So......Post up...
Pffft it's just an IZ pic of a little boo boo on her knee - weak.
We want the technocolor back
I'll try to get a better picture today of my knee.
My back isn't lighting up, I'm not sure why. Its been swollen since the incident and is still incredibly painful to touch in some areas but there's only faint discoloration. I'm actually disappointed cause I was hoping to get a fantastic explosion on my hip.
Give it time [evil]

Oh hell yeah.
I keep waiting for my back to show some color but Mother thinks I bruised the bone itself.
Bummer.
Give it a couple days... might be deep.
Hell, I'm 13 days for surgery and Iv'e still got bruising all over.
The deeper the bruise, the longer it may take to show up....when my spine finally turned the color of eggplants it was a good week after Geaux and Ducatista bounced me off the hoppity hop at Zooom's birthday party.....
