Title: Desmolu went down...
Post by: El Matador on July 07, 2009, 02:29:35 PM
First thing's first, she's ok. She's a little banged up, but nothing is broken. She has a bit of a bruised arm and sore ankle, but her gear held up fine. A few scrapes here and there but the worst is a bruised ego.

The bike, on the other hand is not. From a first glance it looks like it's totalled, we don't know yet.

We had a kind passerby pffer to give us a lift on his truck to the nearest town, we were riding about 200 miles away from our base camp. Right now we're waiting in a restaurant for swampduc to come back with the truck so we can go back to the bike and see it.

Details and pics to follow

Well the most important parts, hers, aren't broken - all else can be fixed.

Glad to hear that she's fine, even if the monsters a bit rough.

Jon said you had a truck and a trailer, so I'm not sure if there is anything else I can do for you, but I'm in Helotes only about 50 miles down 16, if there is anything else I can do to be of assistance just let me know. Also have a pickup if you need me to bring you anything.

Damn man, glad to hear that Desmolu is ok - headline freaked me out. Going down is never good - doubly so on your anniversary ride. Commiserations to both of you.  :-\

And really happy to hear all her gear held up well - paid for itself 10 times over right there!

Been in a bad place myself on a bike. I am so glad she has faired better than me. [thumbsup] Thank God she's OK. Who f#@king cares about the bike, it's people first! Of course after the person is OK then it's all about the bike!! [cheeky]

Details Jesus, of course when you get the time and presence of mind to say what happened. I'm sure we all want to know what went down. Take care of Lecrece first (obviously) then report at your convenience. Just glad she's not seriously hurt. [clap] You guys continue to hang in there. Hell, if you need help I will travel from Dallas. Let me know.

I don't post here often but I always hate to hear of a downed rider. If her helmet shows any signs of damage, scratches or dents you should take a trip to your doctor or an ER just incase no matter how much she says she feels fine. Hope she heals up quick.

Get her some Advil for her milkshakes.  It should help

Wow that photo doesn't tell that tale.  I looked and though 'Eh, besides the bar it doesn't look so bad' - but reading that list, man, is good fortune that she came out that well compared to the bike.

Speedy recovery Lu.  The advice about swimming is good stuff.  Once you get a clean check out from the doc, go for a swim or two.  Moving around will hurt at first - but letting stiffness set in is way worse in the long run.

[thumbsup] Here's to your speedy recovery.

Sorry to keep ya'll in suspense. As El Matador said, we didn't have reception up at the Ranch and my arm hasn't been too fit for typing either (beautiful pics of bruises to follow). I am currently feeling much better. Currently just sore and limping with one bruised and swollen arm. A little road rash on my butt and some scattered scuffing but nothing too bad.

First of all, I want to say a very heart-felt thank you to everyone for all of their kind wishes and especially to those of you who have offered to help. Reminding myself that I'm lucky to be alive and have awesome friends and belong to such an incredible and generous group such as the DMF helps make the loss go down a bit easier.  [bow_down]

A special shout-out to Swampduc who not only tended to my wounds at the onset of the crash, but also had to go on a 6 hour journey around the Hill Country by himself to get the trailer and bring my baby home. Not to mention, he had to deal with the inevitable shakiness of riding after watching the person in front of you high-side (but still got back out there and rode for two days!)  [bow_down]

I'm in the process of uploading the pics and they will certainly tell their own story. The story of the crash is, sorry to break it to you guys, pretty uneventful. I pretty much did the two worst things I could do that I knew I shouldn't have done. The only incredible aspect of the whole crash is that I came out of it so safely, which surprised everyone. It went a little something like this:

We got to the Hill Country Monday afternoon and rode the Three Sisters with Ducaholic and Wasabi - had a great time and was feeling nice and comfy on the bike. The next morning, Swampduc, Matador and I rode out to do the Sisters again. I had a good run on 337 and 336 and was feeling pretty confident. At the beginning of 335, El Matador pulled us over to make sure the pace was ok. He said he'd been getting his knee down and suspected the pace was too fast. Swampduc and I assured him that the pace was good, but I guess I had gotten too confident.

Just entering the sweepers on 335 I was falling a bit behind, entered a corner too hot, and noticed I was aimed at some gravel in my line at a pretty good lean if I didn't change it up. I was pretty uncomfortable with the speed that I'd entered the corner (we suspect it was about 70mph) so that when I tried to correct the line, I panicked a bit that I was going too fast in that turn and way too fast to feel comfortable entering the next one. In my stupid panic, I ran wide and then, hitting the first bits of gravel, did the one thing I knew I shouldn't do: target fixated. I've run wide and gone off the rode before because I have a tendency not to trust the bike to lean as much as I should and I've handled it beautifully. In fact, I've always prided myself on the fact that I am so good at remaining calm in times of distress (LSD'rs will recall watching my rear axle almost come out and my cruising sweetly to a smooth stop on one Hill Country ride).

This time, for some reason, those instincts were gone. Despite the fact that I managed to hold the bike up for a pretty good while OFF the road, was looking in the right direction again and was pretty much convinced and relieved that I was going to get the bike back on the road ok, I, once again, did the one thing I knew I shouldn't do: grab the front break. I remember completely losing the front end of the bike - from the tire marks we could see after the crash it appeared I'd hit a pretty big rock. Then I remember instinctively grabbing down and realizing I'd pulled hard on the brake. As soon as I realized that, it was like a little light bulb came over my head and said "oh make the beast with two backs!" That's all I remember. Next thing I knew I was on the ground, my bike nowhere in site, and Swampduc was standing over me telling not me not to move.

As soon as I came to I felt immediately ok and wanted to see my bike but let Swampduc slowly check me out for any broken bones. He was so careful and informative - riding with a doctor FTW! As he later recalled, apparently all he saw was, in his words, my bike "spiking me head first into the ground like a football" and then tumbling away. From what he had seen, it was pretty tough to convince him that nothing was broken. I assured him that my bones were pretty hard to break. He still kept watch over me for potential concussion, though.

When El Matador doubled back and arrived at the scene I already knew that I was fine and tried to comfort him as he ran over in a panic. When I tried to get up, I got really dizzy so the guys helped me into the cab of a very nice passerby's truck who proceeded to take me into the nearest town (~20 min away). El Matador had stood up my bike and from the side I saw from far away (we landed pretty far apart) she looked ok. When they were first assessing the crash I heard the guys discuss riding her home so I thought she would definitely be fine. El Matador later broke it to me, after a lot of painkillers and ice cream, that I had only seen the good side of the bike; that the other side was another story, and that the frame was clearly bent and cracked.

When we went back to pick up the bike a few hours later I couldn't believe the damage. I really did feel ok and had not suspected that I'd been going fast enough to bend handlebars or crack headers. The rut marks in the dirt were deep and the guilty rock lay just next to the last one. Amazingly, the landing site of both myself and my bike were disturbingly far from the last tire mark. Pieces of my rear set were found scattered across the scene. And, the strangest thing, we found just one glove far away on the other side of the fence. wtf? Best part? I landed all of an inch away from a cactus!

in short, it was a pretty stupid crash and i'm all round pissed at it. but, as everyone keeps telling me, I did make out very lucky to have good gear and strong bones. All those times I've heard people say I am so damned hard headed really paid off, I guess. Well, that and my Arai was awesome. It hardly looks as though it was slammed into a gravel pit of doom at 50mph at all. I'm sad that it is dead. MotoGP jacket held up great too - bruises on my arm are proof. I was also wearing a full camelback under my jacket and I honestly think that helped act as a back protector.

the guys keep telling me to get it through my head and accept that my bike is totaled but I'm not letting go just yet. she's sitting in my living room, staring at me with sad eyes as I write this. I had a beer with her last night and told her I was sorry but she won't speak to me anymore - how can she? Her pipes are cracked  :'(

So, that's the story. I'll post some pics now. Thanks everyone again for all your kind words. I really appreciate it!

A little road rash on my butt where a pocket tore off my pants (I swear I'll never ride without proper pants again despite the fact that my Levi's did impress me overall) and some scattered scuffing but nothing too bad.

Sorry about the crash and the bike but the main thing is that you are basically ok :) and it sounds like you learned something from the incident.

Yes! I am very much so hoping to resurrect her as an awesome track bike. She has never been tracked and I just can't bare the thought of her life ending without seeing track time. I am happy that she at least went down on some sweet roads though, and not in Houston.

I almost forgot one very important thing in my last post - to thank El Matador for being such an awesome boyfriend. He's taken great care of me full of yummy treats and good massages. When I was mad at him for not letting me ride with him yesterday (ya, I guess that was a stupid thing to ask), he immediately bought me some great stout. He has promised to help me build a track bike from the remnants of my baby and to make  road trip with me whenever I find a new bike. Best of all, he is lending me his baby, his 695, until I can get a new bike, as my Monster was my only mode of transportation. I couldn't possibly ask for a more wonderful boyfriend!!! :-*

You did indeed learn two things.  And you're okay.  So, you now have a track bike (in process) and you also get to go motorcycle shopping.

Sounds like overall not such a bad situation. ;)

Seriously though, I'm glad you are OK, and it sounds like Matador and Swampduc know their stuff.

Don't worry, I didn't forget to photograph the damage to me:

My left arm took the hardest hit second to my head. Here is the bruise just as it was forming:

Same bruise a couple days later (today):
No, the crash didn't give me a strange alien glow - that's just the IMac cam. What you can't see in the photo is how huge my tricep is. It's so swollen it is the same size as El Matador's!

A little bit of road rash:

Sorry, can't post the rest of it - it's on my butt. Bruises on legs emerging. might make for some purrty pictures tomorrow.

It does look that way from a first glance. The bike must have somersaulted and landed on the pipe / Tailsection because the frame is bent down and to the side.

You kind kinda tell by the picture that the seat is not fitting quite right.

Glad to hear your okay after the crash.  It's every riders choice to be hardheaded when it comes to safety gear.  I just recently ordered a set of Draggin Jeans 'cause it's just too hot to wear full leather where I live.  I've lived in Houston and ridden in the hills so I know what it's like there also.  Maybe something you want to consider.

It was nice to read what happened directly from you. Sounds like you have already realized the possible mistakes you made and have done a good job of honestly analyzing the crash. That shows what a good rider you are. Some people let stupidity or ego get in the way of their post action break down. Thanks for sharing all of that with us, it's a good lesson in what not to do and makes us all realize that it can easily happen to any of us.

Most of all I am glad to see you are OK and posting up. Really sorry about the scooter. I hate it when they get that sad eyed look. :P

You and Jesus continue to take it easy! Take care. [thumbsup]

Back to civilization, and to internet service. I don't have one of those fancy internet phones like the kids do these days  [cheeky]

To Jesus and Lu, you're more than welcome - that's what friends are for  [thumbsup]

Unfortunately, Lu already posted what actually happened. I was hoping she'd put up the version of the story we agreed on during the truck ride home yesterday. Here's a brief outline:
Well, we were tooling around the Hill Country at  a nice, relaxed 140mph pace - Lu rides an M620, after all. Lu was following Matador and I was riding sweep while off the side, running my boot soles along the ground while Matador worked on dragging elbow. Well, Lu was doing a high-chair wheelie through a 30 mph-posted right hander, when she comes across a 6 foot boulder in the middle of our lane. She calmly bunny-hopped over it, but the bike gave a 2nd hop and twirled like a ballerina 5 times until it spun right off the edge of the cliff off to our left. I promptly did a sumo style 180 sliding turn and came back to the edge of the cliff. There my first task was to kill the boulder with my bare hands. Did I say boulder? It turned out to be a mutant giant armadillo left over in some deep, dark cave by the last Ice Age (no, not the damn movie - the geological age). Apparently, the ground quaking vibrations from an M695, 620, and a desmoquattro sbk roused it from its long slumber and brought it to the surface, pissed off that it had been awoken. It took about a 20 minute piss and then went looking for a fight. When it messed with Lu, it found one, damnit!  >:( I stabbed it through the brain by going through the roof of it's mouth with a sharpened flathead screwdriver that I always carry in my leathers (that's why my nickname is Shiv, btw). Matador arrived meantime, and immediately tied our camelbacks and bike chains together to make a rope with which he rapelled down to a groggy Lu. He then faced a crowd of 5 foot tall turkey vultures, the kind only found in South Texas. He fixed on the lead one with a cold stare and said, " I am The Jesus. You pecked at my girlfriend before she was dead. Prepare to die." He then took its eyes with a cactus quill, and rang its neck like a chicken. The others, understandably, decided to depart and feast on the carcass of the giant armadillo, instead.
BUT... they were scattered by a crowd of zombie squids which congregated on the scene, seeking to feast on the brains they never had, even when they were alive. They rode streetfightered Gixxers, all with bikes' asses high in the air, Euro style. All were clothed in matching Affliction t-shirts, tattered khaki shorts, flip-flops, and chrome cereal bowl helmets. As i suspended myself in the air (Crouching Tiger-style), I proceeded to decapitate each of them with well-placed blows from my new Sidi Vertigo Corsa's - absolutely fantastic boots, btw. Highly recommended - comfy, protective, and handy in zombie attacks. Matador had nearly reached the lip of the cliff, supporting Lu in his right arm while carrying her mangled 620 in his left, when a saber-toothed cat from another nearby cave grabbed his ankle. Apparently, it learned nothing from the giant armadillo and vulture, nor the zombie squids. Well, Matador used his teeth to extract Lu's leatherman from here pocket, and gave the cat what he insists is a Venezuelan necktie, not a Colombian necktie. He REALLY likes to extract things from Lu's pants with his teeth and will do so at the slightest excuse, an unfortunate fact for any 3rd wheels hanging about. Well, the rest of the story is kind of boring. I bungeed Lu's bike to the pillion seat of my sbk, Jesus took off his jacket so he could showcase his manly chest (or as he said, to keep Lu warm - in 105 F heat), and we rode off, with Lu looking adoringly into Matador's eyes and whispering, "My Hero."

Shiv, seriously dude. All three of us promised to keep what *really* happened a secret. Do you know what zombie attacks do to your insurance premiums? Let's just pray the adjuster does not look at this thread.

Sorry, it was actually few of Matador's zipties, placed end to end. Excuse the artistic license.

she's sitting in my living room, staring at me with sad eyes as I write this. I had a beer with her last night and told her I was sorry but she won't speak to me anymore - how can she? Her pipes are cracked  :'(

I felt the same way when I failed my 620, Argento.     :'(

I know that feeling of looking at your baby and thinking "I can save this... I can fix this here, and tweak that there and I can live with this bit over here".  Sometimes, though... its best to let it go.  :(

K, stop taking Lu's meds, and definitely stop mixing them with liquor. Trust me on this.
