Title: What have you lost?
Post by: monster monkey on August 14, 2009, 08:46:10 AM
The other day, my friend was telling me the that he was riding on the freeway, and his cell fell off his belt clip. After pulling over and finding it, it was promptly run over.

That got me thinking, what have you guys lost, either from yourself or your bike, while riding?

Ow... that hurts.

Me, just small change and ear plugs out of an open jacket pocket.  Been lucky so far - couple times I've left tank bags open and something got loose I managed to catch it.  But that presented me with a different problem - how to get it back in the bag at speed

I used to ride with a messenger bag that just velcroed (and crapily at that). I lost a cell phone and a camera before I retired the bag.

I'm the IT guy where I work and I'm also in charge of Blackberry's and cell phones. We have a decent amount of scooter and moped riders in the office. I have close to 10 blackberry's and cell phones velcro'd to my wall that have been run over after they fell out of the rider's holster.

For work, I have a cardkey that gets me into the building.  It's attached to my pants with a self-winding card holder clip thingy.  One day, I forgot to put the cardkey in my pocket after work.  I just let the cardkey hang from my pocket.  By the time I got home, all I have left was the clip.  DOH!

dropped a small Canon elph, but that's not what was lost.  It was all the great pics we took from our Adirondak Adventure, 3 days of riding bliss. the pics are lost, but the memories remain.  took 2 trip back the road and could not find it, its like looking for needles. hopelessly lost.  :'(   [bang]
lesson, when you're tired from a long day of riding, double check everything!

At most trackdays I attend someone in front of me loses something.

One rider dropped his cell phone.  It bounced around for a awhile.  Why would you bring your cell phone on the track?

Frame slider puck.  That one was interesting.  It bounced around like a wacky rubber ball, all over the place.

I once lost a Fedex tube.  Didn't realize it until I got to the Fedex store.  Went back and there it was in the middle of the street.

My Mind. [evil]

I've lost the front end, leading to a lowside.  :P

Of objects I've lost:  My glasses, I had my prescription sunglasses on, and my regular glasses, in their case, popped out of my jacket pocket. I found them but the lenses were scratched. :'(

Recently I lost my Fun Weasel that was tied to my helmet, it's somewhere near Castle Rock, WA. ;D

Lost my entire tail light assembly after my first home made tail chop attempt failed.

Lost the two screws that hold the throttle together. Found out when I went to accelerate and nothing happened. Never found the screws or the housing.
Had a friend come pick me up and load the bike into the back of his truck...

I lost my wallet somewhere in VA on our trip to NC last summer.   [bang]

Must have left on the top of the hard case or it fell out of my pocket.

Got a call from my credit card company to call the state cops in VA.  Someone had found it and turned it in.

I had shipped ahead to JM's, our next stop.

Everthing was still there; including the cash.   [thumbsup]

Definately had been hit by a vehicle.

Lost one of the cowl thumb screws, luckily not both.  had to have a license plate replaced when my first tailchop failed.  The whole assembly was hanging by the wires and somehow only the plate got messed up.  Lost some brand new jeans when I was moving the bike from my parents house to my house 1/4 mile up the road and the slick new tire decided to spin me around 180 degrees and then catch throwing me from the bike.

Gerber Paraframe folding knife.  Used to clip it into the watch pocket of my jeans, but apparently the Monster riding position causes the knife to push up out of the pocket.  I don't do that anymore.  Some lucky pedestrian is now the proud owner.

My condo building requires a card reader ($50 a pop to replace it).  When I ride, I keep that with my driver's
license, credit/debit card (only one), insurance card, registration and some cash in a ziplock in my (outside)
jacket pocket.

Got home after a ride through the canyons, pull up to the garage and find my pocket wide open. And empty.   [bang]
This was in October about a year and a half ago.

Flash forward to the next riding season and I do it AGAIN! Only the worst part is that I had to fly out the
next day for work. I dig for my passport so I can at least board the plane and find that it's 10 DAYS from
expiring!  Major "whew!"  But NO driver's license. For the rental car.

Worst part?  Looking like a complete 'tard getting out of a taxi at my customers.   [roll]

I try, really I do, to remember to put that stuff in the INSIDE pocket and not all together and to check my zippers before I take off.  So far this year I've succeeded but then I've only ridden a few times.

An 80 gig Ipod doing 80mph on the freeway.  Foolishly pushed it only halfway into my front pant pocket.  Looked back and saw the thing bounce numerous times on the pavement.  Didn't bother turning around.

Today, the screw that holds the clutch fluid reservoir to the handlebar extension piece.  Just riding along and suddenly the little pod starts flappin around.  Bizarre.

I had to bring a couple of posters back to the office from a conference (not sure why my boss didn't take them, as he had a car and knew I was on the bike [roll]).

Anyway, I placed them in a poster tube, bungeed that several times to the top of my tailbag, and set off.

I kept checking in my mirrors - poster tube's still there, great. [thumbsup]

I got onto the San Mateo bridge, and not long after I got up to speed (~75 mph), some car pulled alongside me, window open, the driver trying to tell me something.

I pointed to my ears and shook my head, "I can't hear you".  He started pointing to the back of my bike.

I looked in the mirrors, still saw the poster tube, shrugged.  He motioned to pull over to the shoulder.

After I stopped and got off my bike, I saw the issue.  The lid to the poster tube had come out, one poster was completely gone, and the other was halfway out.  Oops!  [cheeky] [laugh] [laugh]

The driver, who also pulled over, then told me exactly where on the bridge I could find the other poster.  Ummm, there's no way I'd go back for that. :P

I somehow managed to secure the one poster and made it into the office without further incident.

I handed the damaged poster to my boss and told him it was his fault for not taking them himself.  Luckily, he had a good sense of humor about it. [beer]

Had a chatterbox unit in my jackt pocket, hit a bump, pulled over to turn around to get it, watched as SUV ran it over..

Lost an ez-pass it was attached to the font fairing had it when I got on the turnpike, but when I got to the exit noticed it was gone...pulled up to one of the cash toll booths and told the lady I don't have a ticket because I had an ez pass, when I got on...thankfully she was very nice and did not charge me any more than the normal toll...they are suppose to charge you the toll from the 1st exit  which would have been a lot more if you don't have the toll ticket...crazy state of NJ have to make money where ever they can.

Lost my sunglasses, left 'em on the plastic D-ring on my tankbag.

Yup, one of those.

Cell phones don't work reliably around here, including at my house. I'd love if I could get rid of the beeper (e.g., by hurling it off the bike at highway speed) but the damned thing keeps returning to haunt me.

one of the bolts to my kickstand.
guess how i found out...

I lost one of the 2 bolts for my kickstand on my old 900 SS/SP.  Twice.

Guess how I found out?

First time it happened I was in the middle of nowhere, stopped to assist a broken down minivan (there was no cell coverage - remember, nowhere) and when my kickstand wouldn't hold the weight of my bike, and after my initial thought was "my kickstand must be in a pot hole".  My buddy helped the family out.  We then stopped to get something to drink and instead found the closest home depot.  After another hour we get there, get a 2 pack of screws and borrow a wrench.

A week later, that screw took off on me on the freeway at about 11 PM.  I had to go back to my office where the other screw was, park the 900 against the wall and get the screw.  Some red loctite later fixed that issue.

I also lost a hat.  When I first started riding, I didn't know the trick to actually putting stuff in your jacket so I would sit on it.  I stood up on my pegs to straighten my pants without thinking and off it went.

I was riding and about to get on the highway, when i felt something hit me on my right shin. it actually hurt a bit, and i rode foward a bit, and half way into a turn i striaghten up and pull over on the emergency lane. I got off my bike and checked my pockets, everything was there. i looked down at my bike...

i lost my clutch post.

but i guess it doenst count cause i found it 2 days later laying on the curb.

I also lost my battery and battery mount from my Hellcat. The mount catastrophically failed from stress and poor design and dropped off the bike on the freeway at about 75.  I ran it over and almost looped the bike in the process.  I popped up and the bike went to about 45 degree angle from my original direction of travel.  The engine kept running which was nice but I needed to get a tow back home.

The bolt/pivot that holds the shifter lever.

On the highway in stop-and-go, shifted up into 2nd and it felt a little weird, shifted up again and it went into 3rd but I couldn't feel the lever.  Looked down and it was hanging on by the linkage rod.  Luckily I was in 3rd which is a pretty versatile gear and I was able to think of a route home that didn't pass any stoplights or stop signs.

Unluckily it took 3 weeks to get another bolt.

I lost a bike... sort of.

I was caring a bag with about 4 very nice, reasonably expensive cigars in it.   I realized that I had dropped it.  I pulled into a low lit parking lot to go get them and when I did I got clothes lined by an unmarked chain hanging diagonally across the parking lot.  did 5 grand in damage to the bike.  I was fine for the most part.  I even managed to recover the cigars.  I ran over to grab them and a car ran over the bag they were in, but just caught the top of it and missed the cigars.  But I was unable to come to an agreement between the insurance and the repair shop.  Ended up having to sell the bike.

Lost license plate on an afternoon ride.

Back tracked 25 miles and gave up.

Notified the Sheriff's office but never heard that the plate was found and that was back in May.

Rode another bike and a week later bought a new plate .

Another time I lost a bag from an unzipped hip bag in which I lost all my first aid kit plus medications I have to take during the day.

Unluckily it took 3 weeks to get another bolt.

i had the same thing happen only i had just shifted to 5th gear on the hwy at 80+

I lost a pair of sunglasses while riding my 1st bike.  I wore an open face helmet back then, and when it was dark I switched to clear glasses.  For thousands of miles, hooking my sunglasses on the belt loop worked fine.  Just once, it didn't.  Bye-bye Oakleys.

I also lost the rear cowl on a GSX-R 600 once.  I stuck my hat under there, and it jammed the mechanism.  Then at highway speed it blew away, taking the hat and the cowl.  I didn't notice until I got where I was going  [bang]

Around 1985 I was storing an old beat up Sportster for a friend spending a few months in Florida.  He wanted me to ride it from time to time.

Coming home from work one day I heard a clanking noise, looked down and saw the kickstand hanging by the spring only, bouncing around off the pavement.  After a moment it came off the spring altogether, and kinda spun in place on the highway keeping pace with me at around 60 mph.  I went to grab it, and if I had been a split second quicker in thinking of it I would have got it.  D'Oh!  TOO SLOW!

I had to lean the bike against the wall till I bought and installed a new stand.

That old bike was a real clunker, but still, for some reason, was one of the most fun bikes to ride (at least on those days that parts weren't falling off).   ;D

Lost a license plate on highway.

Four of us on bike went back about a mile on both sides of the highway.  We rode on the grass side and the berm and believe it or not found it   [thumbsup]

Lost Oakley glass.  Cheapie from now on.

Couple of weeks ago, my side panel on the left side broke off.  (Just received a used panel from DMF'er   [thumbsup] )

I once lost my rear end....because I was in the process of losing my rear axle:

Turns out the guys at the shop where I'd had a new tire mounted didn't "quite" torque the axle nut  [bang]

...and ScottieDucati once lost a girlfriend when he popped an excellent wheelie forgetting the crucial fact that the bike did not yet have passenger pegs, or maybe he forgot I was back there, either way, it hurt  [laugh]

You went out with Scottie?

I lost a cell phone out of my pocket.  It went bouncing.  Didn't know I dropped it until three miles later.  Found it open, face down in the double line.  Working fine.

I lost my left "bar end weight thingy" three times last week  :-\ First time I felt it hit my leg, and turned around to pick it up. Second time I noticed it missing, and I had a general idea where it could've fallen off. I pulled over to look for it, and presto, there is was! Swearing this was never going to happen again, I degreased it and really tightened the nut on the end. Next day I went out for a ride. When I pulled over for a cup of coffee, I noticed it was gone for the third time! And never to be found again!  :(

I guess after reading your stories, it's not that bad! Thanks a bunch :)

Not me, but about the most heartbreaking loss I've heard about was the guy who was the first to cross the Darien Gap on a bike.  He was somewhere South of the gap and I think actually on pavement again when he discovered one of the saddlebags on BMW R800GS had broken off and gone missing, along with all his camera film of the trip (this was well before digital cameras).  He backtracked but never found his luggage or his film.

I lost my handwritten directions to a party.  I rode an hour to the town, then was going to get my directions out and they were gone.  I had them in a breast pocket, I guess the wind snagged them out.  No cell phone, the number was written with the directions...  I missed the party :(  but it was a good ride :)

Yup, I owe for doing all the work of getting her into Ducs. I would have never met her if it wasn't for him  ;D
