A couple pics of the 1968 911S I'm restoring. This is a very rare Soft-Window Euro model, only about 300 produced.

Thanks guys! The pics I posted are pretty much where I'm at. I just finished the wheels this week. I stripped the clear anodize and polished out all of the scratches and then had them clear anodized and repainted the centers black. All of the chrome and cadmium parts should be done at the platers this week. The Targa top was a PIA to restore but I'm almost finished with it.
I'm just about ready to put the doors back on and fit all of the seals. I'll post some pics as I go if your interested.

Yeah, I'm a member but I only go there to look for parts. That has to be the most arrogant bunch of guys I've ever seen. They take real delight in picking apart other peoples cars. Whats funny is that they complain about the Ferrari guys being arrogant [roll]
I don't have a pic of the front without the fenders and hood, but here is one where I'm in the process of stripping off the old paint.

Here is a pic of one of the things that took the longest to do. The carpet pad in these old cars was a 1/2" mat made of horse hair soaked in asphalt :o The entire rest of the interior was covered in what looked like roofing paper and asphalt.

Wow......what a project!
I had a '69 911 S.
5 speed coupe.
Biggest reason I got rid of it back in '70 was a problem I had w, the mechanical fuel injection.
I was getting oil in the gas.
The car bucked and stumbled badly under 3000 rpms in 1st gear .
I loved the S.
I thought it was really fast.....200 DIN hp.
The gear shifter felt like a stick in a bowl of spaghetti.
I even got a letter ( which I still have ) from Dr. Ferry Porsche congratulating me on the purchase.
A far cry from the Carrera S I last had.
I saw a fully restored '72 or '73 S offered for $135,000 just this last weekend.
You are going to have a beautiful car when it's all done.
Dolph :)
Very cool. [thumbsup]
I recently was lusting after a local 912 that was on eBay, same owner for 20+ years. Extremely nice car, well documented, pics of everything imaginable in the listing, only went for $16K.
The "S" models probably aren't the best drivers. Everything has to be perfect for the engine to run right. But nothing else sounds like an "S" at 7,200 rpm ;D
(http://i470.photobucket.com/albums/rr62/porsche40/DSCN1465.jpg?t=1252961330)
d'Oh
it took me a few to figure out that the soft window folds down (see's the light)
Very cool!
great thread. [popcorn]
The soft window doesn't actually "fold" down. Well not like a convertible anyway. The frame stays in place and the window "zips" around the top and sides and lays down in the back seat area. There are a couple of handles under the Targa bar that you release to relieve pressure on the window so that it can be unzipped. After the window is down there is a cover that is fastened with Tenex fasteners that covers everything up.
This was a neat idea. You could have the Targa top on and the rear window up and have a semi convertible. Or have the Targa off and the window down and have a full convertible. I read that Porsche quit building these bacause the American market complained about the windows leaking and being noisy.
I'll take some closer pictures this weekend. Glad to see some interest in the old Porsches.
Dolph,
Did you buy the 69S new? These old Porsches are like Ducati's...they definately have their quirks! Especially the S models. Mine is a 2 liter rated at 170 hp. It has the two 3 barrel Weber carbs. I think your 69 was a 2.2 liter and you said it had the fuel injection. Those are pretty good HP per liter numbers for the late 60's.
I remember the first time I drove mine. I was really dissappointed. These things are have no power taking off! But after you get to 5,000 rpm...Wow! From 5k to 7.2k rpm those little motors sing! Especially with that rear window folded down ;)
135k is GOOD money for an early "S" right now. I haven't seen any sell that high, although the really good cars never make it to ebay. I'm selling mine as soon as it's done to finance my next project. I hope at least a few on the board will be excited about it.

Hi RM, I bought my " S " used in '72 w, low miles from a Lotus and Alfa Romeo Dealer who used to race professionally.
He took me for a test drive and we were flying so to speak in and out of traffic on an Inter State located near his location.
I was sold !
I was driving a 1970 TR-6 that I had bought as a new car and I thought it was a peppy car for what it was.
I paid $3300 for the " S ."
The good ole days .
In 1972 it was all I could afford.
In 2005 the Carrera S I leased was $113,000 and change.
The cars are light years apart.
The '69 was a standout in '72 .
To see a Porsche 911 S was such a rarity.
The Carrera S was such a pleasure to drive but it wasn't " that " car like the '69 S was for it's time.
The '05 Carrera S was like a fine Swiss watch.
It ran so smooth and handled like a dream w, an interior that was mind blowing.
The '69 " S " was so ........VISCERAL !
It was like an untamed beast.
Compared to the '05 , totally unrefined , but it made my blood rush every time I turned it over.
It was a torrid love affair that did not end the way that I had hoped.
It will always be remembered as one of my failed loves but what amazing times we had.
Dolph :'( :)
I forgot to mention , the 911 S that was advertised for $135,000 was for a totally restored car that had as much or more invested in it as advertised..
Haven't checked this thread in awhile. More pictures, hooray!
I'd love an older 911. My pops has a '56 or '57 (I forget) 356A Coupe that's mostly restored sitting in his garage. Still needs some work to be a daily driver, but I've driven it some, and it's a hoot.

Not doing any engine work. It was rebuilt by the previous owner about six years ago. After I found out what it was worth I hardly ever drove it. I am going to pull the engine for some detail work and put a synchro in the trans.
Schweet. 8)
The engine is almost done....looks a lot better. Hopefully by next weekend the motor will be back in and running again. This was the first Porsche engine I removed. Did it by myself in a couple of hours. Only 4 bolts holds the engine/transmission in :o

You cannot believe how good it sounds at 7k rpm. The older Porsches sound better than the new ones imho. Well, except for the Carrera GT. Kind of hate to sell it when it's done, but it should be in someones collection.

On the home stretch now, looking good [thumbsup]
The reason I say it should be in a collection is that there just aren't very many like this left. A Porsche restorer told me there may only be 20 of these in the states. There is one for sale on the German market and the ad says only 3 known in Europe. They're asking 69k Euro for it, which is about 104k dollars. And it's in pieces! It's been completely stripped and painted and the engine rebuilt, but you have to put it together. The only other one I've seen in the states just sold for 117k dollars. Now you know why it will be for sale ;)
Looks great. Thanks for sharing. Sent you a PM as well.

I have a customer that has a 356 Carrera something or other that is one of 12 left in the world. He routinly takes it on 1,000 mile rallies. He bought it to drive it. Just saying.

Even though I am sure I already know the answer to this; any chance they are going to let this have an LSD?
QuoteEven though I am sure I already know the answer to this; any chance they are going to let this have an LSD?
QuoteOne clue to the Spyder's purposefulness is that it comes standard with a mechanical limited-slip differential, a relatively rare device in a Porsche. A six-speed manual transmission is standard for the Boxster Spyder, while the impressive dual-clutch seven-speed PDK transmission is optional (and 55 pounds heavier). We drove only cars with the manual transmission, but Porsche tells us it has eliminated the PDK's Tiptronic-style shift buttons on the spokes of the steering wheel in favor of shift paddles behind the steering wheel.

Great job man!
Hopefully this will be proof that hard work does pay off. I bought the car 7 years ago for $7,800. Actually got a four year loan on a 1968! The wife wasn't that impressed ;D Anyway, I kept looking for one like it on the internet and couldn't find one. After talking with some Porsche experts I found that it was a pretty rare car, so about 2 years ago we took out a loan to build shop so that I could restore the car. Another big risk for us. I usually don't do anything unless it's a sure thing.
Well, a couple of months ago I had an appraisal group out of California come take a look at before it was even finished. It ended up appraising for $107K believe it or not. The last one like mine that I saw sell went for $117k. I have plans to build some titanium duc frames after the car sells. Getting all of the paperwork done for the business now.

I guess I'll have to appreciate it's beauty in pictures unless you want to set up a 30 yr mortgage for me to buy it. [laugh]
Great work. [thumbsup]
Yeah, it's really worth that much.....heck I'd take 90K for it ;) Still a lot less than that new bike from NCR!
Porsche is just like any other car, if you get the right one they're worth something. Usually if it has an "S" in the model it's worth quite a bit more. Hmmm....Ducs also. The old 50's Speedsters are worth 180k-200k. Same with the '73 RS 911. Anything after '74 (when the new emmision and bumper laws came into effect) isn't worth much, 10k-20k. So, if you find a pre '74 911S that needs restored you'd better buy it.

I'll trade you a '69 Chevelle SS that needs full restoration for it. [cheeky]
There's an old 911 sitting in a junkyard nearby but it's well beyond help. Breaks my heart to see it.
Schweet. 8)
ooo pretty!
makes me want to drag my 65 bug out and start working on it again. doubt it'll be worth 107k when I finish with it though [laugh]
That's gorgeous. [clap] [clap] [clap]

I have plans to build some titanium duc frames after the car sells. Getting all of the paperwork done for the business now.
Keep us posted on this. I will most likely be interested. :)
I had a guy interested in the car, so I sent him the link to my photobucket account. There's around 160 pics of the restoration. Turns out he was a car broker looking to present the car to a client in Germany. He told me the price was to high (started out high on purpose) and that the car wasn't perfect enough for his client! :o Not sure what I could do to make it better.....
Show him pictures of other 911's in rougher shape... [roll]

Are you positive that it wasn't some clown messing with your head?
That looks damn beautiful to me.
That is an awesome car.
Beautiful work! [clap] [bow_down]
Oh, man! Old 911's! That closeup of the interior just about made me wet myself. I can smell it, I can hear the engine fan and gearbox, I can feel that shifter. I get a bunch more excited about these than a new one... help me...
Great job!
Oh yeah, the smell of gas and oil! The sound of the dual webbers sucking air! I wish I had a sound clip of the engine at 7,000 rpm! Almost F1 like. I really like that car. But I don't need a 100k car to drive once in a while. It should be in some rich guys collection. Besides, my wifes new Mini Cooper S will kill it on the back roads ;D
The interior is just like new. Autobahn Interiors in California did the seat covers and zip out rear window. The black and white houndstooth material was the last piece of NOS that he had! The "Elephant" hide vinyl pattern was a one year only option. I bought the drivers side door panel from a guy in California (guess they have all of the cool stuff). It was NOS still in the plastic! Kinda pricey. I wasn't sure the wife was gonna survive the restoration. LOL
I think you need a video of Tom Berenger trying to jump into it unsuccessfully and a picture of William Hurt driving it in a brown tweed sportcoat with old school RayBan's on.
lol My wife loves that movie!
