just had 1 wisdom tooth pulled.
waiting for the pain to start in few hours [bang] [bang] [bang]
:'( :'( :'( :'(
Did they give you some vicodin/percocet?
Just one?
Had all four of mine out last year. Was eating solid food withing 4 hours with no pain or bleeding at all. It's really now as bad as most make it out to be.
I didn't even take most of the pain pills (while I was in pain ;D)
On a funny note, when I was in the recovery room my Mom said that nurse asked me how I was and I said "I'm make the beast with two backsed up! Now lets go get some beer" They had a good laugh at that.
^
good lord, that is impressive

Just one?
my wife only had 2 out.
I think I had maybe 3
Mine came in straight but they pushed my teeth forward causing 2 molars to crack. Last Thursday I had all 6 teeth removed. Friday I was still partially numb but Friday night I was pretty sore. I just alternated Tylenol and Ibuprofen every 2 hours along with frozen yogurt, pudding, applesauce and ice packs and never got what I would call a 4 on the pain scale.
Sunday I ate solid food with no problems. Yesterday I had the sutures taken out and and healing well.
The nitrous (laughing gas) i think was really good though. Never tried it before. lol
Nope, i have no pain killer prescribed. I better get some ibuprofen.
I had two out before and boy did it hurt for next couple of days.
The remaining wisdom tooth (1) decide not to do it yet as I have implant tooth next to it and wasn't sure. That implant cost an arm and a leg. I could have bought another 620 almost (used one)
(Everytime I say implant, my mind goes somewhere else) ;D
MetallMonster - my hats off to you
I am going to try and not eat rest of today and just avoid the whole thing.
I went out drinkin' that night. The doctor called to see how I was doing and my Dad told him I was "asleep". ;D

I did the same the next night. The vicodin was awesome.
That is some fast recovery for some of you guys. Lucky dogs !
I was reading about dry socket and what the dentist was saying. Now that is some scary stuff there.
While at the dentist, i was asking the nurse will that gas make me talk. Have memories of what happened to me when i had kidney stone removed few years ago. The nurse told me that during recovery, I was pointing to all the nurses and saying "you're hot! you're hot!" and the friend that came to pick me up, I was saying to her "You're hot ! You're hot!" ;D

My wife needs one and I/we feel your pain.
You can actually have it done at Ohio State Dental School for a lot cheaper.
but again........a dental student is doing it with a profess/dentist over their shoulder.
That is what Tiff is going to do.

Sounds like a good idea there. In hindsight, I should have gone there instead.
But then I never went to the student haircut, so hmmm not sure about student dentist ;D
I remember a nursing student friend of mine asking me if she could practise syringe injection on me. Never ! Never ! Never on me !

That stuff is the devil. Trust me.
drinking on it is not a good idea.
It is very hard on your liver due to alcohol + acetaminophen.
look at my sig link (the "Ouch...")
i've had 4 SETS of 4 pulled.
last time I had one that was almost an inch long in there.
i am a shark.

Here's my gross pic from today extraction. Not sure why I asked the dentist assistant if I can have it.

It's a mess.
In first grade I had 7 teeth pulled.
I got braces in 6th grade and got them off right before my senior year of high school.
I had one lower tooth that had an obstruction, so they had to surgically dig in there, remove the fragment, slap a bracket on there and then pull it up by wiring it to the cross section wire of my braces. It make the beast with two backsing blew. I wore retainers for 5 years, stopped wearing them. Well, now my tooth they had to extract is make the beast with two backsing crooked, so I need some braces to fix it.
I had buck teeth growing up and I remember my orthodonist saying once:
"You'll have to be seven feet tall before you grow into those teeth"
Well, mothermake the beast with two backsing drunk fat no glove wearing prick..........I did grow into them and I am 5' 7"

At NIH, they will remove your wisdom teeth for free as long as they can have a bone fragment to study. My sister did it with great results.
Ive got 4 wisdom teeth that move around occasionally. Havent hurt badly enough to yank them. (In other words I'm a huge Pussy when it comes to any medical procedures).
If they give me the gas, Im going to have to have a trusted "representative" on site in order to not give away any secrets....
BTW the same "representative" is under strict orders to confiscate and destroy both my computer and cell phone in case of my untimely demise....
It's not as bad as everyone makes it out to be, I had 8 teeth pulled (including 4 wisdom) at one when I was 17. They plugged me into the IV and told me to count backwards from a hundred, I got to ninnety ni before i was out. Woke up 2 hours later and was eating about 5 hours after that.
No worries mate.
I've had 3 pulled in 2 sessions 10 years apart. Each time, I was only anesthetized with a local shot of Novocaine and went to work right afterwards with a mouthful of gauze to soak up the blood.
Never took the Vicodin afterwards either.
ouch!
a couple of years back i got 4 of mine pulled out, but they had to put me under cause mine never came throught, so it was a surgery, they gave me perks for that and much needed let me tell ya. but the puddling, soup and yada yada diet helped me loost a few pounds [laugh]
then a year later i went and he numbed me and then pulled 4 more teeth so we get the braces and get my teeth back in order
Mine were impacted, I had all 4 out at once (at 19).
My local anesthetic ran out partway through the procedure. Although they tried to inject me with more, it had lost its effectiveness on me (I could even feel the needle).
At that point they still had 2 teeth to drill out so they just did it as quickly as they could. :-X
I'm 39 and still have all my wisdom teeth. I remeber them hurting when I was 17 for about a week and that was it. Guess i'm lucky.

impacted vs bone impacted
mine were bone impacted, they were against the jaw bone. at that point, it's not dental work anymore, goes on your medical.
i have 3 more up in there but doc says they don't look like a problem and might be reabsorbed.
When I was at Miami U. at Oxford , Ohio my wisdom teeth were impacted. I do remember they hurt like hell.
I now remember , they never came in. I guess that is what impacted means.
Even so , I never had them extracted.
I don't know why but that was in 1967 and my memory is a bit IZ_ during that time period. ;D
My Brother had his ( all 4 ) cut out at OSU and they didn't give him any pain medicine.
On the way home he came out of the anesthesia and was in a lot of pain so we stopped and called our Dentist who called in a script for pain meds.
Dolph :)
I guess I am lucking out this time, it has been 10 hours since extraction and I am not feeling much pain. Just changing the cotton. I actually went for a short ride. [thumbsup]
(all i know is that the previous extraction hurt like hell for a few days)
I don't think I can keep on going without eating tonight, screw it I am getting a jello.
WTF is puddling?
congrats to those who healed fast.
for those who haven't had it done : my dentist recommended lots of vitamin c starting a couple of days before. You get a jump on the healing process.
Meh, I was eating a burger the next day...
What a coincidence. I just had all four pulled yesterday morning. All of them impacted so I got knocked out for the procedure. Mouth was frozen for a long while after but no real pain. Tylenol 3's were the only thing given to me and so far they're doing the trick. Can't chew too much but I can stand to lose a few pounds. ;D

I had one taken out, no big deal... I feel like I got lucky- I remember a guy in boot camp that got some taken out, looked like someone kicked his ass with a 2x4

P., that must have hurt like hell !
I had to have a Crown this past Spring and the Novocaine shots made me just about cry.
Shoving that needle down into my jaw it felt like it was an ice pick being pushed into my jaw.
When it was over my face was so numb it felt like my lower jaw was on my chest.
I had the Dentist get me some Vicodin since he had ground half my tooth away so I could get some relief.
Dolph :)
Over simplified lay explanation of bony impacted wisdom tooth extraction compared to wisdom tooth extraction:
They have to break your jaw to get your tooth out. It hurts a lot more for longer.

oh shit, they didn't have to do that to me. it was just sitting on the jaw bone and they split and yanked it out and sutured. i think there must be degrees of "bony impaction" cause my jaw was fine when i left!

nope, apparently just dug a lot and pulled out whole. see photo link below.
A couple of mine had to be sliced in half to be removed. The worst part is the sound of the snapping and cracking and the wet feeling you eventually realize is the profuse bleeding from the remaining chasm where the tooth once was.

[laugh] I didn't want anyone reading this thread to start thinking it was all fun and games.
Ten years ago, before they would let me go to Antarctica, Antarctic Support Associates told me I either needed all 4 wisdom pulled or a note from my dentist that they would never be a problem. My dentist took some x-rays and told me they would have to come out. All 4 were impacted, and I was unemployed so I couldn't afford full anesthesia, so I got the local. I recall not feeling pain from the chisel they used to break the bone so they could get at the teeth, but every time the dentist swung the hammer my head rocked like I had just taken a punch in the face. The wisdom teeth had turned sideways so the crown of the tooth was facing the roots of the neighboring molars. When enough bone had been chipped away, the dentist reached in with pliers and snapped/cracked off the roots of the wisdom teeth and pulled out the fragments. My gums took forever to heal and were still tender two weeks later when I got to McMurdo station.
