Is nothing sacred? >:(
I heard something about them redoing that song..... awful idea....
It's on youtube, if you want to see it. I will not post it.
I prefer to remember the original, the one that impacted the world, the one that was something special.
Honestly, never heard of the song before. Here's the original. The description even says who is singing what for us young-uns that don't know who is who.
We Are The World - Michael Jackson Lionel Richie Cindy Lauper Steve Wonder Bruce Springsteen... (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jzw6GiqZyD0#normal)
Some good background, as well as some figures on the amount of money raised and donated.

The song itself sucked though. :P

Gee....thanks now I really feel old....
Their heart is in the right place. If they make money and it gets distributed properly, that is a net win.
As far as the song itself goes, I don't know why someone couldn't compose a new one with all the talent on board. I happened to catch the premiere, and while the original was not a great song as much as it was a fundraising vehicles, turns out neither of these things are improved by auto-tuning. Or Celine Dion. I also didn't like the ghost of MJ looming over the choir - I know he was the crown jewel of the first one, but it felt like a shout out.
Do we have to be the world? How about they can be the world. You can join them and be part of the world if you'd like. As for me, I'm going to sit on my deck, shut my eyes and try my hardest to forget that the rest of the world exists whether we are it or not.

I'm a bit surprised that the Playing for Change people didn't do their own version. Maybe they couldn't get the rights.
25 years after. Is Africa any better? Did it make a difference?

Well, there is no apartheid in South Africa any more. So that is better.
sac
/did a pop song cause that?
//doubtful.
It's awfully coincidental that the Internet arrived at the same time originality died.

Hahahhaaha, Lil Wayne was involved?
that dude is about to go to jail for about a year, rumor has it with good behavior he will get out in 8 months.
Apparently he is happy to be going as he can write more tunes..........
let me find the link.........
ah shit, I don't want to waste the time.
The best part he somehow got the judge to postpone his reporting time due to visiting a dentist for something involving his "grill"
what a make the beast with two backsing joke.
Done talking about the original as the original "We are the World" is 100% a politically motivated song, as is this one and surprised SacDuc's post didn't get this locked.
Out.

Really???
Biting my tongue so hard.
Done really now.
Kanye West. What a great person.
I feel so bad for his outburst for taking away Taylor Swift's moment winning her huge award.
Well, his other outburst on TV. No comment. We all know about that.

Great. How's the weather this time of year?
Did you interperate my comment as: "Since Nelson Mandela was freed South Africa has turned into a pardise of racial harmony." or was it more like, "Legally mandated apartheid has ended leaving fewer official legal for blacks who want to own businesses and land but there is still a great discrepency between white and blck standards of living but there is at least hope for improvement and these types of radical societal shifts tend to take a while since even 40 years after the civil rights movement here in America the is still a defacto segregation of most major cities and a latent racism that stifles some opportunities for minorities and even having a black president does not make America a "post-racial" society.

Sure, you've got that but I thought that it was to fight famine.
The Dude. haha
Nice of you ladies to try to lock my thread there. I'm speaking of the musical merit and the first was no work from Mozart, but it had musical giants like Dan Aykroyd and Latoya Jackson.

I think it was an insult to the original musicians that did it.

it was... there are some confused peoples in this thread.
or, more accurately given the age of the original song, a lot of people here old enough to forget. ;D
Maybe next they can organize some sort of handholding campaign. Maybe one that stretches all across the country. That's never been done before right?

Damn, bringing back the 80s hardcore. I think like 3 people tried this in PR. They almost made it across the island.
For the youngings:

Notice some of the great celebrities like Chewbacca and the Disney characters. Who knew Chewbacca lived in Ohio?

this thread had me thinking, er, remembering that day, too...
i had a very vicious bicycle jumping incident early that morning that resulted in a 20ft+ slide on asphalt (right after i'd taken off my shirt). i remember watching the whole thing on tv in considerable pain.
on the plus side, it did give me some pretty cool looking scars. ;D
Hated the original, have no interest in the remake.
Haiti was a pit before, and will continue to be a pit no matter how much money gets thrown into it.
And yes, I've been there.
Did like the remake of REM's "Everybody hurts" tho.
