I'v always wanted on. Something to hold me over till I can afford a Streetfighter. Keen on the KTM, Husq. Thought's, opinions, what else is out there? Just watched a sweet SM510 go low on Ebay. Damn I hate being broke.
Thats one of my favorite SMs. Those husky sure are pretty, ive heard mixed things about maintenance on them though.
hows the parting of the bike going?
Slowly but surely, most of the small stuff is sold. If I could just move these new forks and the engine, I'll be sitting great. There goes $8K down the drain. Live and learn, with a flat wallet.
I wanted a motard but.....
Seriously, I want a, ohhhh, a Road King...... or even a bagger....
Too many opportunities to haul some nice trim.....
First option would be a VibeRider in the passenger seat...

Watch out for the 510 i know they had some issues with cranks snapping, that was two years ago so they may have fixed it. I was looking for one a few years back but was put off for the money. Best bet is probably to look around thumper talk for a good deal.
Good idea. The DRZ seems like the big choice on there. Just wish it was at least a 500. Hell, I may have this frame left over and the engine. Could build a SM....ha

I can tell you the DR650 is hella fun...it pulls big make the beast with two backs off wheelies [evil] the 400 is a BLAST too though, you'd be surprised if you haven't taken one out yet.

I've done no research at all but that looks like a super modern trials bike. Wasn't Ossa always known only for Moto-X and Trials? If so, that's no comparison to a road ready super moto what-so-ever. Still a nice bike but it's not even apples to oranges.
^^ It's a Trials bike for sure. Far cry from a Super Moto. [thumbsup]

Don't knock the little DRZ's. I ride with one now and then. On the straights the GSXR-R*-CBR-ZX bikes flat run from it, in the twisties though, it is a whole other story. Nothing like being in a full-lean, knee down, 180 degree hair pin on a 600 sport bike and being flat out wasted by a guy on a dirtbike with street tires LOL. He can still roll right along at 90 MPH on the flats though without redlining it.
Sumos are fun bike! like riding a scooter [thumbsup]
Go and get a ride on a Super Duke. Stupid fun of a bike that wants to be ridden like a dirt bike all the time.
a couple of guys in our local group have the husky, though i think one has the 630.
it's even probably going to be for sale soon since he had a decently bad fall on some gravel. :-\

I know it's a trials bike, just saying I like the look and materials. Looks good on paper to have some fun. Just a pipe dream, sure it will be $10K +
+1 on feeling like a scooter, also feels like a powered downhill mountain bike. Rolls over curbs and babies all day long.
I have a KTM 625 SMC, not in the same league as race-ready SM's (like the Husky SM510, or Husaberg FS570) but plenty of power with reasonable maintenance, but adding some more weight. That said, the RFS motor KTMs (converted EXCs) are reportedly very easy to work on.
Very different ride than the Monster, and very small tank (I'm lucky if I can get a 100 miles on a tank). But supermoto seats don't help with going more than 100 miles anyway *ow ow ow ow*.
IMS and clarke make some great tanks to replace the peanut sized tanks on the SMs and dualsports.
you can also get your seat re-done.
i choose the give myself hemmerhoids after doing 600miles at a shot on the 2x4 of a seat route. you may enjoy not having to stand on the pegs for the last 100 mi of the ride because your ass hurts so much. lol
that said, the most fun i have ever had on a motorcycle is on the XR ripping through the city. potholes, curbs, hobos, stairs...these mean nothing. [thumbsup]
I bought my Husky SMR450 new, back in 2006. I beat the living shit out of it and it has never let me down. I have a Scotts filter on it so oil changes are cheap and after 5 years it has never need a valve adjusted.
I have met people from the supermotojunkie forum who bought DRZs because they thought the Husky was too expensive only to find out that the OTD price they paid was the same as the Husky with the standard Japanese dealer markup. The two bikes are in a completely different league. Yes you can build up a DRZ but it will end up costing more than a Husky before it even comes close to the same level of weight and performance.

[thumbsup] I saw the VibeRider at a rally we "hardley" people attended and a woman sat on the seat.....she wouldn't get down from there and eyes rolling constantly.
I rode the SuperDuke and wasn't all that impressed personally. The throttle is twitchy, brakes felt too soft and the power felt like it lacked off the line, likely change for this is a sprocket I'm sure. I think the design is great but I wasn't convinced to give up my S4R
The Husa FR 570 is not brought in to the States. Looking at a Beta as well.

-street wheels for daily riding
-swaps the lights for a number plate and races supermoto

Go for the sumo! I commute on a dinky crf230l but its fun as hell weaving in and out of traffic. Couldn't imagine what the fun would be like on a husky or ktm 450, but i'm sure its unreal!
Spoke with the only Hussy dealer in Tenn. 2010 SMR510 is $8699, wonder if I can get him down, never bought new before, not sure what mark up is on Hussy's. The good thing about them are they're race ready, so no mods other than bling really needed.

Giving that you're selling you're bike as you nee dmoney (at least, I got that impression-I could be wrong), why would you finance something? You could end up in the same place, but now owing money on something that you can't even afford to get rid of.
If nothing else, buy a used one.
Who said anything about financing? Something from the old school called saving. ;)

or a ktm. i demoed the other superduke 990 when muskrat did. Good times. Nice sound from stock pipes, could use some adjustment for the on/off throttle response. Power was good, but needed resprung so it didn't squat as much when i gassed it. clearly not a true supermotard. was comfortable though. just wasn't as good as the duc.

Look for a 2006 or newer. Better valves, carbs, tranny, and other stuff.
08 or better. EFI, engine tweaks etc.
Oh crap, just discovered the Aprilia SVX, and they's cheap used. less than 6K, and my God do they fly.

Be wary of the 2007 models though, the motors would grenade themselves from time to time.

And that's not the desired effect, right?
SXV....most fun i've ever had on two wheels. 08 and on are good...very high strung though. The 07's weren't technically street legal either. It likes to have one wheel in the air...doesn't really care which ones [evil] and it's 280lbs wet.
280lbs wet and 50ish HP = a good time! [moto]
Buy your bus pass now! [laugh]
My 525exc in reta motard trim is a hoot. But you pay for that hoot, in the form of checking/setting the valves ever 40 hours of run time. Or changing the oil a LOT more often (hold 1.5qts). The SXV is the same, but even more fun.
We ride ducs, so who gives a shit about maintenance right? Get the SXV, make sure the case doesn't have the orange sealant (needs replacement), and ride/maintain it!
Only reason I don't leave the KTM with the motard wheels on it? The dirt is more fun, and swapping it back and forth (and keeping a dirt bike clean) is a pain (more the cleaning part).
Take a ride on a DRZ before you buy one. Slow, slow, slow. I was at Streets of Willow on a 900RR (that's Honda Talk for you sheltered guys), and a 525 KTM and 610 Hooska came around the outside of me going into turn one, right after I passed them both down the front straight. They were both draggin' knee, and sliding sideways, it was pretty impressive, and I never saw either of them again. They just took off. Sigh.
About the Aprilia and the Hooska, do you know where any dealers are? I don't. There are several KTM dealers around.
If your getting just a play bike, go with the 510. But if you need more street-ability out of it get the KTM 690. Ive heard but no FHE, the 510 is more of a race bike, more maintenance, lighter more power to weight. But fun to ride. I bought the 690.Still 62HP and 315lbs but feels like it weighs 200. I was willing to sacrifice a little performance for ease of maintenance. But this bike rips! Easy to ride, its the best bike ive ever owned. You can see the list of previous bike in my sig. Slipper clutch included!

The 690 is perfect for urban commute and a bit of canyon curving!!! so so light!!! i ride my 690 more than my duc, but in no way close to getting rid of the Monster ;D
I have a damn good time on my 625smc. Not the greatest pics of my ride but I was easily able to keep up with my buddy on his RC51 through the tight stuff. When the roads opened up (60+ through the turns) he was able to stretch out the bigger bike. My choice over the S4 in the mountains honestly. KTM 950 SM-R owner here.
I love this bike.
At 50 mph or less it handles like a dirt bike and I ride it that way.
Over 50 I hang off sportbike style and it loves it.
Tons of power, killer radial brakes and I can go 100 miles on a tank no problem.
It also travels well. Pic with the rear rack, side bags and Givi top case. This is after a 600 mile return trip from dimby.

More maintenance intensive than Ducatis I think.

What's the difference between the SMR and the superduke?
Maintenance like a ducati or not as bad?
Pretty much everythings different. Completely different bikes.
Not as maintenance intensive as Ducatis are though :)

Except for the SD makes you just as dumberer as the SMR probably does. ;)
It still wants to be ridden like a dirk bike more than anything.
Not a true super moto, but I have a 2010 KTM SMT...basically the 990 SM + more comfy seat, bags, larger tank, and better wind/weather protection.
Probably the best bike I've ever owned. Light and super fun around town...but still does very well on the highway and longer trips. I rode it 2,100 miles round trip from Seattle to the Miller SBK races, included nice twisties as well as boring slab. We did 640 and 620 miles on 2 of the days. It handled it all with no complaints from me at all...excellent bike!
Leaving Seattle on a lovely Spring Day :P

I have a Duke II
I hate to admit it, but I like riding it more than my Monster.
In fact, it might be the best all around bike I've ever owned.
It will make you stupid, however.
It also sucks on longer trips, is a bit down on power and it needs better brakes.
It's also a bit low on "soul"
Also, why am I channeling mother's writing style?

you guys with the big sumo's (990, 950) ever wish they were a bit smaller? I feel like my 625 is at the upper limits of how large of a bike i'd want without being more street biased.
No.
If I lived in the city i'd want something smaller, lighter and with one lung though.
Riding a 625 at 80mph 600 miles to dimby seems...
Abusive.
My friends 510 is at it's limit completely at 80mph
I have a DukeII and a Monster. They are funtionaly very similair.
So much so that I have considered selling one a number of times.
The Monster has too many mods and too much time and money invested to sell, besides it's so dang pretty.
DukeII is more fun for urban ridding and for mountain twisties, but sucks on the slab. I'm currently in the "ready to sell" frame of mind. If anyone is interested I'm in the Seattle area. $3500.
But if ya want it you better grab it before I take it out again. Because every time I ride it I revert back to the "I could never" let it go mind set :)

My 625 motor is good up to about 110mph. BUT, the wind blast is pretty unbearable at anything beyond 80. Well, and it vibrates a little. ;) Okay, maybe more than a little (anyone who's ridden a pre-690 LC4 motor will understand). But what would really get me is the seat, and the tank range for doing any long distance trips on the 625 SMC.
But everyone else is right, riding it sort of makes me teh dumb.
