I just realized despite all the help everyone has provided me regarding my 08 695, I failed to properly introduce myself.
My name is Wunmi and my 08 Ducati Monster 695 is my first motorcycle. I've been a huge admirer of Ducati's for some time but was too scared to get one because I thought I would inevitably kill myself (I'm a bit of an adrenalin junky - love mountain biking and driving everything from remote control cars to my actual car as fast as can be but under control).
After almost getting a Hypermotard and constantly drooling over a friends 999 I took the plunge and bought a used one in July with 3800 miles on the odometer. Since then, I've been obsessed with understanding, drooling and modding this monster. In having my moto license for 3 months I've somehow found a way to put more than 3K miles on it, ridden it from MD to Connecticut and back.
I'm looking forward to understanding my Monster and becoming an overall better rider and drinking some beers and having a general good time. I'll be at Chadiwick's tomorrow with my project Duc.
Here are some before pictures:

Welcome! Nice pics!
Welcome to CAM!
See folks... that's how it's done. An intro post with pix!
Welcome - your summer sounds a bit like my first with a license and my 620 - about 1k a month, just go go going.
Enjoy the 695... that black on red is one of my favorite looks - sharp!
Welcome to the board and congrats on the bike! I really like the black swingarm and triples, been thinking of doing that to my bike for a while [drool]
Welcome to CAM! Gorgeous bike!
Here are the latest look of my Duc.

Thus far have removed the stock headlamp and replaced it with dual headlights, removed the stock taillight and replaced with a Light Werks integrated taillight with turn signals. Added CRG levers and Rimoza grips. Fortunately, the bike game with the full termi exhaust kit installed :). Next task is to find a fully adjustable front shock, rear shock, adjustable clip=on bars, Brembo goldline brakes, a nice digital gauge and maybe an M900 engine.
There's an Ohlins shock for sale that is the right model

If you can find the forks from an S2R1000, S4 or S4R (when they first came out, before the radial caliper mounts) those bolt right up. Or there's a couple options for cartridge kits that replace the internal suite.
Has it got a 14t sprocket yet? A very inexpensive and easy to do mod, that sure made my 620 feel like a new bike.
Sorry to say, you don't have a full Termi system, just slip-ons - full implies that it's all the pipes, from the engine heads on back. Those are just slip-ons. Though it might be the full race kit they offered, with the ECU, filter and slip-ons.
And while I'm nit-picking - you gotta hide that one electrical connector on the right side that used to be covered by that pod. It'll just slide off a tab and you can zip-tie it to the upper frame rail.

a nice digital gauge and maybe an M900 engine.
Depending on how much you want to spend on a digital gauge, you can get a trail tech vapor for cheap on ebay and it works pretty well. Not as nice as Moto Gadget, but much much cheaper.
As for the 900 engine, you might need to do some research since it runs on carbs while you have a fuel injected system so it's not just plug and play.

Thanks for the ed regarding the termi's. You are most likely right with it being the full race kit as the ECU and filter were changed when the termi's were put on.
Already liking this group a lot. Keep the comments and suggestions coming along. Always looking to improve this monster.

There's FI 900s... like mine! Folks have done the 900 swap, but there's more to it than just plugging in a new power plant. As enke said, your ECU is not going to run the 900... well it might until you burn up something due to running SUPER lean. Folks have used after market ECUs to over come that issue.... But as you might figure it aint cheap.

Just learned at the CAM meetup a Chadwick's I could bore out the motor and add 750 pistons to increase the power. Also changing the sprockets will increase the punch of my little monster.
The choices, oh the choices.

I forgot about that one .... :-[
Wunmi, good to meet you last night! [thumbsup]
Sorry now, but I'll have to cut down on your choices ... your 695 already has the same bore as the 750, just a shorter stroke. I just checked on bike boy (http://www.bikeboy.org/duccapacities.html) and 695, 750 and 800 all have the same bore of 88 mm.
The 620 has the same stroke as the 750 but a bore of 80mm so if you had a 620 you could theoretically swap in the cylinders and head from a 750.
engine | bore | stroke | displacement |
800 | 88 | 66 | 803 |
750 | 88 | 61.5 | 748 |
695 | 88 | 57.2 | 696 |
620 | 80 | 61.5 | 618 |
I believe the shorter stroke of the 695/696 engines allows them to rev up higher (and better) and produce more HP. You could in theory swap in the crankshaft and rods from a 620 but then you would have head clearance issues and costs would rise ridiculously.
My suggestion is to pretty much leave the bike as it is. Learn to ride it well, get a few track days under your belt so you can push it closer to the limit and put on some frame sliders, they will save you a $#!% load of money if you ever lay the bike.
Cheers,
Massimo
Get the suspension tuned up and the bike will be faster... well Not technically... but the ability to exploit the speed will be greater. When I went from a 620 to my 900 with it's shiney suspension bits, the increased power was nice (won't lie) but it was the better suspension that made the most impression over all. If my 620 had the same quality of suspension as my 900 does (and I was aware of the difference) I might still have that 620.
Wunmi,
Good meeting you last night.
I wager the engine swap and mods you're discussing are going to cost $$-$$$. We all know the mod bug and personalizing your bike is a lot of fun and harder to resist.
IMO your bike is sweet looking now, especially with the mods you've already made. It already has great performance for the type of riding you're propbably most likely to do. I'm kind of with Massimo.

Massimo it was great to meet you last night as well. Thanks for all the great guidance regarding displacements and the crazy costs for upgrading it. The track day you mentioned sounds so exciting. I will have to invest in some good frame sliders before doing so.
I m just so terrified of laying Johnny 5 down but I think a track day would be soo much fun.

I'm hoping this bug gets passed onto someone else soon because I am not sure my wallet can take the abuse and punishment. Thanks for the comments on m Duc. With the current J5 project it looks pretty good as is as well. Just wonder where I can improve and distinguish my Duc more.

Speaking of mod bugs I just a bag of alu 7075 bolts ;D
They look nice, don't rust and they are 1/3 the weight of the standard bolts, still
I'd have to swap ALL the bolts in the bike for real weight savings.
Wunmi, you could buy some red bolts to complement the bike's frame [evil] [evil] [evil]

I used to play that game with all my bicycles way back in the day. Used to break out a postal scale to get a good idea of what everything weighed. I one time even stooped so low as to spend about three hundred dollars for a titanium bold kit replacing all the bolts in the drivetrain. What's the end result you may ask? Netted me about 50 grams weight savings. [laugh]

Welcome - and agreed (with this and other comments). Spend your money on suspension before engine. Once you decide to upgrade the engine it's really the best time just to get another bike with the bigger motor, better forks, etc. You'll end up saving $$$ and headaches in the long run. Sadly (for sellers) Ducatis just aren't holding their value like they used to, so by the time you're ready you'll be surprised what you can afford.
The nice thing about Monsters is some of the blingy bits will move right over.
Welcome to the spot. Fine selection of mods, we have similar taste it seems (and displacement). If you see a DArk 695 with duals running around give a wave, it's probably me.

Will surely do. Duals seem to be rare around here. So I'm sure I will not miss your Dark.
To add to the redness, I've got red wheel tape. What's the best way to put it on the front and rear tires without screwing up the job?

Didn't know there were two kinds but I have the red reflective.
Best way is with a set of stands on a warmish day if outside, or a warmed up garage. Get a strong light source (like the sun) and find where it highlights the outer lip of the rim the most. That's your working area. Choose a spot on the rim and stick the end of the tape. The position on the rim (inside vs out) doesn't really matter - I just aim for the middle.
Lay down a couple inches of tape, slowly, trying to keep it tensioned, and consistently positioned. Once you get a couple inches down, move the wheel a bit, peel some more of the backing off and repeat until you go all the way around - then overlap the tape ends by an inch or so.
Working in that same area of the wheel helps you be consistent and keeping some tension on the tape helps it lay down smoothly.
And of course - be sure to clean the wheels well before.

Lean the bike against a wall and lift from the front of the engine with a car jack. Works for me 100% of the time!

It could definitely be done, I'll take a look at mine and see just how big of a pain it would be. Wrapping a cylinder with varying diameters can be a pita but I'm sure it could be done. Only concern is how long the vinyl would resist rocks, big bugs, and Camrys until it knicked and looked like ass. Might have to experiment on mine...

Will these fit my Monster?
Rear shock from a 07 S4R?

Rear seat cowl that says it will fit a Monster 696, 796, 1100?

Seat cowl - no. But one for any monster from before the 696 era will fit.
The shock - pretty sure not. Though not 100%. You might post the question in mods or tech. Someone there will have a for sure answer for you. To help you hunt. Look for shocks from a DSS monster from 2001 and later. Specifically 900s 1000s and S4s

+1
Seat cowls for 696,796, 1100 have the screws (or buttons) on the side. The previous models have two plastic flaps that go underneath the seat and through them you bolt the cowl onto the seat.
Pre 2001 shocks are longer and are very close to the exhaust headers, the bikes these fit on are known as "hooped" suspension.
Starting with the Monster 620, 695, 800, 1000, and maybe 900ie (Ian please correct me) Ducati changed to the same layout as with the Superbikes (916 - 999 - 1098) and Sport Tourers, so those shocks are most likely to fit your bike.
The issue with shocks, like the one you've posted, is to have enough space for the external reservoir. You need clearance for the vertical header, the ride height adjust rod and the shock to fit in that area.
Hope this helps, and that my answer wasn't too long and confusing. And if you're still in doubt, go ahead and buy it. If it doesn't fit you can sell it ;)

or buy a bike that it will fit. ;D
The 900 got injection in 2000 becoming a 900ie, but the 2000 still used the older hoop style suspension. So my bike a 2000 900S has fuel injection but the older frame.
One tactic people have used is to get a shock with a remote reservoir as opposed to the piggyback sort
Just snagged some a really nice ST4 fork for the front. Now to get the shock for the back and this baby will be complete, I hope.....
