Who you got?
Go Wings, but I know it will be a short playoffs for us.
I am going with the Caps and "Ovechtrick" [popcorn]
As a wings fan I can always hope, but they're pretty banged up, so since in from the dc area I'm gonna say the caps will go all the way [thumbsup]
Oh hell yeah. Let's go Caps!
Oh, and I added spoiler to the title just in case anyone gets bent after not watching live. :)
Go Habs. :D
Who else?? The number one team in the league.......Go Nuckers!!
what the hell was that thing that got tossed on the ice at the Wings game?...a squid?...I saw a brief glimpse during a highlight reel between the 2nd and 3rd period of the Caps game...
Yup. A squid.

That is an octopus. It is to represent the old days and how many wins a team needed to get the cup... 8. Something started here and just never left.
Thanks for explaining that
Now it makes sense. Sorry I got my cephalopods mixed up. The octopus wasn't wearing any gear on the ice so it looked squidly to me. ;D

Haha, np. Its funny, our guy who is in charge of the ice "Al Sobotka", always swings them around to get the crowd going. Heres a good image of it

This opening game with the Kings and Sharks is great stuff.
RE the Wings and the octopus. I read last night that it's now a fine and possible jail time if you get caught throwing one at JLA. Supposedly it's a new Detroit city revenue making scam. Bummer.

I think all Arena's/Cities have that now for all sports. I think the big push for that came back in the mid 90's with the Florida Pathers "rat" mascot thing got outta control. It would take several minutes for them to clean that mess.

It's been that way for years.
If you guys are wings fans, head over to kuklaskorner.com and read George Malik's blogs about octogate. It's the NHL, not Detroit that is trying to end the 60 year tradition.
The wings will make a deep run this year. They're only lacking Zetterberg and have several black aces from the Griffins since they're not in the playoffs.
Canucks/Blackhawks hell of a game. [clap]
The Wings just can't do things the easy way. That was a brutal 3rd period. I felt like I was gonna puke for the last 10 minutes.
Definitely got a little edgy there. Some dumb penalties there for sure...Bert's slash for one. A few of the others were very questionable.
Great to see Mule mixing things up after he came back from getting stitched up. [bow_down]
Solace for me was hanging with 30 other Wings fans at a great bar in Denver for the game.
Bar specials were: $4 Molson Tall Boys (24oz), $1.75 Stroh's and $0.35 Long Island's for a 15 minute stretch. [thumbsup]

Yeah, I was really glad to see him come back. I really wish the Wings had a Probert/Kocur type guy because Shane Doan needs an ass whoopin. It was bad enough with the hit that took Franzen out but then the facewash in their little altercation behind the net, with that smirk on his face, he really deserved an ass kicking.

Well then someone needs to step up to the plate. I'm sure he would be up for it. ;)
Doan will get his when the wings have a better hold in the series. You don't white wash a guy with a broken nose and come away clean.
;D
As others have mentioned, where is Bob Probert (RIP), Joey Kocur, Stu Grimson, Darren McCarty, Brenden Shanahan, et al., when you need them!
The Wings got quite a bit sloppy in the third, particularly with some unnecessary penalties and poor defensive plays.
I am, however, glad to see the boys playing with a little fire in their bellies!
Here we go, Red Wings, Here we go!

Some of those Wing penalties were earned, but WTF was up with the Helm boarding? The league's penalty standards are just as inconsistent as ever. Totally make the beast with two backsed is a better way to put it. As far as an enforcer, Abdelkader is a pretty scrappy lad. He's a pure Red Wing enforcer like McCarty was in that he puts up the numbers to justify his spot on the line, yet can still drop the gloves. Bertuzzi dropped them twice in a single game at the end of the season, and still works offensively like Shanahan did. The Bruise Brothers are a memory for this team. I don't think we'll see that kind of goonery again. Look how poorly Brad May worked out with this team.
I wouldn't call Probert a goon. That man had a lot more skill than people give him credit for. Hell, he scored close to 70 points one year. To go with almost 400 penalty minutes. That's pretty damn impressive.
I agree completely. He's remembered for his goonery (like McCarty), but he had a great scoring touch.
I'm hopin to make it to game 3 of the Detroit/Phoenix series tomorrow....we'll see how Franzen is feeling, that hit into the boards was pretty vicious!

It will be interesting. Seemed like adrenaline took over yesterday, with a few exceptions.
It was classic seeing him on the bench when Babcock was asking about a face shield for him and he shook it off.
I think the older I get, the more I hate the Wings who are in the Eastern time zone, playing a game in the playoffs in the Western conference. God I hate having to watch a game until 1:30am. Good win though. [thumbsup]

Blasphemous as it is, I was rooting for Chicago. Not just to see Vancouver lose but so that the Wings didn't have to go back out west...again. They could end up playing west coast teams all the way through. I'm just hoping they can sweep the Sharts too. Too many late shifts and I'm gonna be all make the beast with two backsed up at work next week.
It wasn't unions or unreliability that tanked the big 3 - it was the red wings playing on the west coast every spring for two months that killed productivity. ;D
Here's to another round of late night hockey and difficult alarm clocks for Wings fans. Another sweep seems too good to be true, but I'd sure LOVE it! Let's hope the midget commissioner gets shitty about the octopus toss again. It's bad luck to make the beast with two backs with the octopus tradition.

I edited the schedule to include 5-7 and to post the television coverages.
I have to say, the first round was absolutely fantastic!!! Seems that the matchups were really good all around, only two series were short.
Second round should be interesting. Both East and West have seeds 1v5 and 2v3. [popcorn] I think West will be Wings/Canucks, but cant count Preds outs. Not sure about the East. I think Caps/Philly, but TB could be wildcard. I dont see Boston with that powerplay they have unless they can fix that in the next day or so.

and it's a good teaser for what is coming next. You're right for the East , It should be Caps/Philly, but the Caps need to fight hard aginst TB; that is exciting, great team play and lot of talented players on each side. That penalty on pavelski is a complete joke...
snow showers often result in unsportsmanlike calls. It sure as sht wasn't roughing though. The officials got the right time in box on the wrong penalty.
Unsportsmanlike for a snow shower.. In the playoffs? Yeah, that's common... If you're the Wings.
The wings rarely ever get calls (relative to their regular season stats). I could bust out stats if you wanna get bored (once I get sobered up). I have homer glasses and don't pretend to be objective. I'm wearing my wings gear and cheering at the television, so I have no delusions that I'm watching this as anything other than a fan of my team. Still, blatant showers to the face like that do get called. They don't often get called in the playoffs because they don't happen as often in the playoffs. Pavelski made a dick move and got a couple pokes from Howard. I don't think they should have called either, but calling both is all the same to me.

Hell I dont even begrudge the howard/roughing call. 4minutes, in OT when the guy that was "hurt" was laughing at the bench, a hooking call in the 3rd? or 2nd when the guy tripped over his own skates... the NHL hates Detroit.

Franzen will be out for sure in game 6. The only question will be Modano or Hudler?
The best part of that game was seeing Clowe not only get crushed, but punked, by Kronwall.
I'm glad they called Abdelkader for his cheap shot. I wish they would have called more of the marginal hits. This is the time of the year where strategic injury can be a part of the game, and that's shitty.
Quote from: redxblack on May 08, 2011, 07:51:51 PMFranzen will be out for sure in game 6. The only question will be Modano or Hudler?
Modano was pretty effective in the series v Phoenix. I'd like to see more from the namesake of the local ice rink http://www.cityofwestland.com/icearena.html (http://www.cityofwestland.com/icearena.html)
My money is on Modano instead of Hudler. I think we need Modano's size.
We also need the Wings to play at the level they were in the 3rd period for an entire game (actually the next two games).
I can only think of one game where the wings put in a full 60 minutes whistle to whistle. I'd love for them to play with intensity for three more games in this series, and then for 8 more.

As much stock I put into what Barry Melrose says on ESPN, sounds like he is taking the wings. Something about home ice means nothing after losing 3 in a row and past demons SJ has in the playoffs.

Yeah, refs didn't see the puck hit Sedin on that icing call. The winning goal was a lucky bounce of Marleau's stick, but end result is Sharks are done. They were outplayed in the majority of the other games in the series probably because they burnt themselves out on the Detroit series after almost blowing a 3-0 game lead. Sharks need to re-think their roster for next year.

Beyond the 4-5 big names (I do not include Dany Heatley here), the rest of the talent really drops off. Their biggest issue is they don't have any young guys being developed on the farm. So their only recourse is to trade away some of the guys that didn't perform and, yes, rebuild.
