Squirrel, Child, Greyhound....Unnexpected (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Nn0UkdDArM#normal)
that's nauseating. how can he let that child handle that dead rat?
She was awfully sweet with it though. Especially at the end where she laid it down, gave it a gentle pet and left it at peace.

my 2 year old daughter treats toy bears the same way.
letting the child play with a dead animal of this type is bordering on abuse. she doesn't know anything about disease etc.
And I'm not some pussy tree hugger saying that, I've slaughtered and butchered my own chicken, turkey, goats and lambs. I'd do my own cow if I could, but they are too big. I don't give a damn about the squirrel and I'm not squeamish about dead stuff.
I wasn't implying that it was OK. But that sure was some seriously sweet innocence there.
ok, at 0:42 he zooms in on her (mom's) boobies. Class act.
We had a Greyhound, and I will say after 1 squirrel and 1 rabbit, not much in that size range would venture into our yard.
Wife at 5:30am: Honey, will you help me get Ducky in the house, he wont drop the rabbit he caught.

Nope. Of course, it is situational, but there have been instances of children removed from a home under similar circumstances.

Um...what exactly are you trying to convey with that pic of Sal?
[cheeky]
Gotta say there is no way I would let a grandchild of mine play with a dead critter, particularly one that was wild. Abuse? Not in the classic sense, but in terms of negligence, a little like sending your child to play in a garbage dump. Hopefully this was a prop, not a dead, possibly diseased varmint.
Oh, this is not aimed at bobspapa. I do appreciate the humor..

negligence as you described is abuse, under the law.
i'm not saying i would go after these people -- abuse is situational -- but i would certainly yell at them.

Their dog killed the squirrel...it's not like it was diseased and died and she found it.
It's no different than handling a dead animal after you killed it hunting. Ease up people!

2 year-olds don't hunt and don't know how to handle dead animals..
When was the last time you went hunting and slung a deer over your shoulder and nuzzled it? Like ticks much?

As far as I know, after you shoot the deer you are up to your armpit inside said deer gutting it. In my book that's a bit beyond nuzzling.
If getting a tick constitutes an abusive situation would it be safe to say, then, that allowing your kid to wash with regular soap instead of anti-bacterial soap is also abusive?

I didn't nuzzle it, but I did carry it over my shoulder (mule deer...not your tiny east coast white tails...so it took two of us ;)). I remember watching the ticks abandoning ship as we walked out. Big deal...I survived no worse for wear...and I've done it multiple times.
I also killed lots of wild rabbits, squirrels, birds...you name it. No big deal.
Besides, her dog killed it...presumably by biting it. Is the dog now infected with whatever it supposedly has? Can she not play with him anymore?

Some people gut and some people take it to someone else who guts it. Either way, you know what you're doing and as an adult, you've accepted the possibility you may get a tick or something.
A child doesn't know how to handle a dead animal, and the parents weren't instructing her to keep it away from her face, which they should have.
And to shit on your analogy, anti-bacterial soap is slowly being taken off the market since it's been found triclosan is an endocrine interrupter. Kids who use it too much end up with premature facial hair and cancer.

that's just weird, actually. eat it or leave it out to be eaten. it doesn't need a burial, it's a g****squirrel.
My 5 year old son had a big ole tick crawling around his neck while hiking in Colorado a few weeks ago. Luckily we got it before it took hold.
Lighten up people!!
I touched tongues with the last deer I shot, then I ate it.
That video was nothing more than cute

Who does that? First, who wants to pack out an un-gutted deer...way too heavy. You guys shoot them off the highway or something? Second, I'm pretty sure they need to be cleaned quickly so they don't spoil.
If a person can't gut their own deer, then they shouldn't be hunting.
...and on the lighten up note..I appreciated the boob zoom! [thumbsup] [laugh]

Excellent response councilor, you really got me there. Doesn't answer the question. Let me change the analogy. Would said parents be abusive if they let the kid outside with SPF 15 instead of SPF 75.

I read on some website that people hang their deer for a couple days to let them get "gamier". I know when you hang pheasants you keep their guts in. Is that different with deer?

Yes. Never heard of anyone not gutting a deer right away unless there was a logistical reason

+10000 on the swine flu LOL
and the video is OK. I am sure there is a 0.01% chance the kid could have gotten a tick or rabies, but it was kind of funny, and probably educational for her. I would not have let it go on as long as that dad did, but abuse - come on - not even close.
Rescued grey hounds are fine hunters - my neighbors always have 1 or 2, and they keep the rabbit population down.

Personnaly, I found it encourqging that there are still parents in suburbia that are willing to let their kids explore the world outside whatever game console is currently hot. The kid played, had fun, the dog had fun, the parents had fun, the kid got a bath.
Way back at the beginning I asked if you were kidding when you said this could be considered child abuse, and you defended your position. Sorry if I then missed your humor. [thumbsup] ;D
I've never heard of anyone not field dressing their deer on the spot. The sports will have the guide do it but no one (here) takes it to be processed not cleaned
I actually find it to be some what heart warming. The innocence of the little girl and the father who you can sense is somewhat sickened of it yet both parents allow for her to handle the critter. The whole disease issue is well, not really a big deal in the grand scheme of things. Chances are she will come in contact with far worse items. The posters that say it's borderline abusive. WOW, you have led a sheltered life. Society needs to allow kids to experience these sort of things. It will make them well rounded individuals. If this is what warrants kids being removed from parental custody, then me and every one I know should have been placed in an orphanage.

Back to the dead squirrel -
I cringed when the little girl was rubbing it all over herself, but... an important question is how long has it been dead?
My perception of dead squirrels is stinking diseased roadkill like I see (and smell) while out riding.
I suppose if it was a fresh kill not much could happen unless perhaps it was rabid or something.
This was a happy funtime thread that went to shit faster than the squirrel got stiff.
I have no comment other than I was really hoping when the dad zoomed in on the squirrel at the end the squirrel's eye would have glowed a dim red. Or maybe it could have raised one little squirrel finger ever so slightly. That would have been awesome.

I kept waiting for the dog to bolt into frame, grab the carcass from the kid, shake the shit out of it, and the kid to flip her shit.

Yea, I read it wrong... they aged the meat like beef, cleaned and skinned to tenderize it but didn't recommend butchering it for a atleast day or two.

that sounds pretty cose to what happens here
animal is gutted on site, skinned at destination, and hung for a couple of days before boning/packing
then you spend a week hunting for ticks
