Title: College Football: Who you got?
Post by: metallimonster on June 18, 2008, 06:42:45 PM
I searched and couldn't find a thread on college football and thought it would be cool to find out who you guys root for and what you think abou the upcoming season.

I'll start.  I am a huge Buckeye fan, yes I am ready for all of the comments, national championship talk, and you guys can't beat the SEC talk, but on pure talent and returning players you have to at least put the Bucks in the top 3.  I guess we'll all see in early September when the Buckeyes travel to LA to take on the men of troy. If my boys get past USC with a win I'm sorry to tell all the haters that we will be in the National Championship for the third year in a row.  Other than Wisconsin there is no one in the Big Ten that can touch us.  Especially Michigan.  In fact I feel sorry for all of the big blue fans out there.  How do they expect Rich Rod to beat Tressel every year when he was only 4 and 3 against WV's rival Pitt.  I guess that is enough smack talk for now.

WASHINGTON HUSKIES

Willingham is on thin ice and has to perform. Otherwise he's gone. On the upside the recruits look good as they've built a strong team around the talented QB.

We'll see how this season turns out. Hopefully we can get back to the continuous success of the Don James era!  [thumbsup]

Bucky,

Other than USC your Badgers are the only team I am scared of.  That night game at Camp Randall is going to be ridiculous.  You guys are loaded at tailback but lets not forget about Beanie Wells.  He'll probably go into the season as the Heisman favorite.  Lets hope they can come up with a good QB because your going to need to have a solid passing game against the Buckeye's D.

I think everyone can agree that we can't wait for football season to start.

I agree that it is a big if.

It's going to be a great game and we both have great defenses so it's going to come down to the offenses to win the game.  We are returning our quarterback and Beanie Wells is the best back in the counrty.  Your going to have to stop him to win and that will open up our passing game.  Also, we have Terell Pryor coming in and I am sure we will see him in certain situations like Florida did with Tebow when they still had Chris Leak. Mark Sanchez is still unproven though, I have heard he's having a great spring and looks very good.  I just think we have more experience and the intangebles.  The Buckeyes pretty much have to win this one if we want to get to the title game.  Plus, we are going to be losing a whole lot of players after this year so USC is going to kill us in Columbus next year.

Also, just wanted to say good luck to all you U of M fans becuase your not going to win 6 games this season.

Okay, so I love everyone giving a shout out to their schools but how about some conversation on the topic.  Let's hear what you think about your team's upcoming season and maybe a little trash talking about your rivals.

I realize this is a bike forum so maybe most of you do not watch a lot of college football but in Columbus Buckeye football is life.

Oh yea and for all you Michigan fans-good luck this year.  You're really going to need it.  Rich Rodriguez is scum and recruits players who get into trouble.  ( See Chris Henry and Pacman Jones).
Big Blue is not going to get over 500 this year.

It should be a good one, it'd be better if Jamal Charles didn't bolt for the NFL and having to replace a lot of the O line.  I didn't make it down for spring practices so I don't know too much about the state of the UT running game.

It'll be interesting to see if Mack Brown can put together another 10win season.  Let's see if baby face Colt McCoy can bring some of that freshman magic back.

I just got back from Louisiana, and the force is strong.  Les is still the most brilliant coach in college football today, and they have paid top dollar for i mean recruited some fine athletes (Patrick Johnson, for example).  Winning is nice.

Just saw where a Michigan RB Grady got arrested for DUI. So it is already starting under the Rich-Rod era.  Funny that a coach known for having players get in trouble is already having players get arrested.  Not many arrests under Loyd Carr, but then again not many wins against Tressel.  Can't wait to see what happens with that team up north this year!  Oh by the way, Ohio State was just ranked #1 in 2009 recruiting classes by rivals.com.

Go Bucks.

Is that all you got.  Yeah I know my Buckeyes lost the past two years to SEC schools but you guys haven't won a National Championship since 1980.  We've been to the game 3 out of the last six years and beat a Miami team that was supposed to be one of the best teams of all time.  When you make it out of your conference with a championship, let me know.  I hope you guys do well this year and make it to the big one because we are and I would love to snap our losing streak against the bulldogs. I promise you that the 21 returning upperclassmen are plenty big enough. Knowshon is good but doens't compare to Beanie.

By the way, glad to see someone else who likes to talk smack.  This is what college football is all about.

No they don't have to play Appalachian but they do have a pretty good Utah team for their home opener.  Could very well be a loss.

i think the smack talk is fun.

And I was upset as could possibly be when I didn't get to watch the USC v Georgia bowl game, and instead had to watch my favorite team make a mockery of Hawaii.

That would have been the best game to watch, IMO, and am hoping that something large scale like that pans out for this year.

USC should have been in the title game and would've been if it weren't for the worthless BCS system. The title game was a joke and we all knew it was going to be beforehand.

However, the one plus about last year was that because of the crazy # of injuries SC sustained a LOT of young players got good playing time and really came of age.  Hopefully the QB situation works itself out, but if not we've got a TON of great running backs to hand the ball off to.

Finally a USC fan.  You had better hope that your young players got some time because the big bad Buckeyes are coming the Coliseum on Sept. 13.  Mark Sanchez better get good at handing the ball off to the RBs because the he won't be able to throw against the Buckeye D.  Once again Beanie Wells is the best back in the country.

No really though, it should be a great game and I can't wait to see who comes out on top.

Back in, what was it, 03?  USC fans were THRILLED by the BCS system.  I know it wasn't you, necessarily, but acquaintances were shoving my face in the fact that SC was going to the championship and not LSU.  These days I hear a lot more of the 'worthless BCS system' talk from the Cali guys.

That's the problem though.  There's always someone left out that SHOULD be there.  Sometimes you catch the breaks and get it, other times it works against you.  In the end, the only real way to determine a true champion is a playoff system.  Until then, someone's always gonna be pissed and you're gonna have co-champions and then champions who maybe shouldn't be, etc...

Yes you can say that the only way to determine a true champion is a playoff system, but isn't the regular season the playoffs.  Lets face it if USC didn't get beat by 49point underdog Stanford they would have been in the title game.  You can't pregnant dog about the BCS if you don't win.

No, the regular season is the regular season, just like in every other sport on the planet.  Did you see the Boston Celtics get blown out by the Hawks?   Does that mean that the Hawks are a better team?  No.  That's just a ridiculous argument.

And yes, you can argue if you don't win.  Why would you argue if you won?   (and it's not like we haven't been the beneficiary ourselves)  That's like an attorney arguing a case he already won, what's the point of that?
Title: Re: College Football: Who you got?

You can say that the regular season is the regular season but if you are in a major BCS conference and go undefeated you are pretty much going to go the the titile game.  You might as well get used to it becuase there is no way that we are going to a playoff anytime in the next ten years.  The conferences don't want it the coaches don't want it, and the bowl advertisers don't want it.  I think the best we are going to get is a +1 system and that would be fine for me.  Also comparing basketball and football is ridiculous.  Football is nowhere near the same as basketball you play 12 regular season games in football and something like 30 ( I don't watch that much basketball) . Anyway you want to look at it.  If USC would have beat Stanford last year they would have been in the championship game over a 2 loss LSU.

Even if we had a playoff someone would still always be left out.  There will always be a team pregnant doging that they didn't get in.  It happens in the NCAA Tournament in basketball every year.

So you don't think the NFL model is a better system?  If it weren't for the playoffs the Giants wouldn't be champions even though they proved their mettle and showed themselves to be the best team (beating an 18-0 team in the Super Bowl no less).

I understand it's not going to change, but burying your head in the sand and accepting what you know is a flawed system is just dumb.  I don't care that SC didn't go to the show last year, they won two titles while I was a student - I've seen plenty of good times and I'm sure I'll see plenty more.  What I want is a chance to see if the schools that have "no chance" can actually pull something off and make history.  But, those teams will never have a chance because the Saggarin system says their schedule is too weak, etc.  Don't you agree that it's in the best interest for ALL fans, not just us lucky few who went to schools with traditionally strong programs?

I agree whole heartedly that the NFL has it right (except for their overtime wich College does way better).  I would love to see a playoff. Im just saying it is not going to happen for  awhile.

Well, the start of the season is just a week and a half away! ;D

I'm hoping that Mark Sanchez and Joe McKnight get healty and can play against Virigina because I want the Buckeyes to roll into LA and beat the best USC team possible so no one can doubt we are the best team in the league this year.

So here is to a speedy recover Mr. Sanchez and Mr.  McKnight   [beer]

I was on campus last saturday and I saw Sanchez being carted off the field (but he was smiling, so I dunno what that means).  However, even if they're both out, USC will still beat Virginia (and Ohio St.).  Have you seen the QB and RB crews at 'SC?  USC will be just fine.

You would really feel comfortable with Mitch Mustaine behind center with the Buckeye's D led by 2-time all american James Laurinaitis?  I wouldn't want our backup quarterback (Bauserman not Pryor) going up against Ray Maualuga and co.  Plus your wide recievers (who lets face it didn't produce as much as normal last year) are going to have to step it up against our secondary.  You'll beat Virginia easily no matter who plays but your going to need all of your starters to even have a shot at the Buckeyes.

All smack talk aside.  I can't fing wait until the season starts.

How is the atmosphere in LA?  Everyone here in Columbus can't wait for the 13th of September.  I can't imagine what campus is going to be like that day.  The time difference means that we will have all day until 8 p.m. to drink and party.  I hope I actually make it till game time. I'd better not start drinking until after dinner if I want to be able to remember the game at all.

Last time I checked USC played in the Pac-10 but they could have transfered without me knowing.

Your right though 0-10 in bowls against SEC teams.  After we beat USC we'll be waiting for the SEC champ in the title game again.  Third time is a charm.

By the way, the SEC champ is not going to be Georgia.  More like Florida.    Every few years people get hyped up on Georgia and they always turn out as a bust.

The one they were talking about is the kid who played in the bowl game last year against South Florida.

Man I wish Dixon would not have got hurt.  You guys would have got to the title game and then Ohio State would have another BCS Championship.

They barely beat SC last year WITH Dixon and when SC was without MOST of its lineup.  How do you figure? He's good, but he ain't THAT good.

All they would have done is win out and after beating USC -to me SC is the gamecocks not Trojans.  Wouldn't have been that hard.  With everyone else losing 2 games they would have been in.

They lost to Arizonza, UCLA, and Oregon State after losing Dixon.  All were very winable games with him.

He also would have won the Heisman.

Not a lot of ifs just one if.  With Dixon they beat the trojans without him they lost to UCLA who sucked last year.
It's a moot point anyways.  I was just saying I wish the Buckeyes could have played Oregon rather than LSU.

Sorry, one if and a lot of assumptions based on that.  UCLA is always a very hot/cold team and they love to play spoiler.  It's possible they could've gone to the title game, but far from a certainty.  Oregon wasn't THAT good, Dixon was.  If he doesn't have 3 great games, they don't win out either.
Title: Re: College Football: Who you got?
Post by: metallimonster on August 27, 2008, 08:10:44 PM
That was exactly my point.  Dixon was the most valuable player last year. They won games with him and lost games without him.  I  just picked UCLA.  None of those last three teams were that good. I am certainly not a Pac 10 fan or hater for that matter but I liked watching Dixon because he was very exciting.
I don't want to start a whole conference debate thing but the PAC 10 whether its fans want to admit it or not is just like the big ten.  Two, three or maybe 4 teams are good and the rest are mediocre.  Obviously Ohio State and USC are better than anyone else in their conferences.  You then have teams like PENN State, Wisconsin, and Michigan, Oregon, Cal, and Arizona State.  After these teams the rest of both conferences are nothing special.  Didn't Notre Dame beat UCLA last year? ( I think so but don't want to take the time to look it up).  They are not like the Big 12 or SEC which have good teams throughout the conference.

I guess we'll see two weeks from Saturday.
By the way just saw some stats on the big ten network.  Since 2005 the winingest teams are USC 34-5 and Ohio State 33-5.

Just one more thought.  Oklahoma got their asses handed to them a couple of times in the BSC championship games and people don't hate on them near as bad as they do Ohio State  why is that?  Yeah we lost two national championship games but we've only lost 5 games in 3 years plus one 14-0 season and a national championship 2 years before that.  Most teams would kill for the chance to play in the BCS championship games.

Well,

Both USC and Ohio State looked really good on Saturday.  Obviously Beanie getting hurt scares me.  However, I have a friend that covers OSU football for the student paper and he said that Beanie tore a ligament in his right big toe.  Since he can't injure it anymore than it is he will be able to play maybe this saturday and for sure against USC.  Our chances of winning against USC without Beanie are very slim.

I'm no medical expert, but wouldn't a torn ligament in one's toe really affect the way someone can plant their foot since so much of the force and weight is centered on that big toe?  If so, that's terrible news for OSU...

From what I heard is that sure he will be in pain but he played with an ankle and wrist injury all last year.  They will just splint it up and shoot him full of Cortizone and he should be fine.

I hope so at least.

USC, LSU, Oklahoma and Penn St appear to be pretty good.  Season is still early so we'll see...
