Title: Power tool to clean shower stall scum?
Post by: pyrocpu on September 12, 2011, 07:03:52 PM
OK, so I get this is a rather asinine question... I'm feeling pretty bad for my +1, who often scrubs and scrubs the shower to get all that crappy soap scum off. Yeah, I know we ought to be using that Tilex spray stuff at the end of every shower session. Been forgetting. :(

Having said that, do you think it's reasonable to put something on my cordless drill, like a scouring pad? There must be some sort of power tool solution (kinda sound like Tim Allen now) for this, right? Anyone got ideas/solutions?

Ahhhh... the things I think of after several beers...  [drink]

The best thing to use is just a brush, anything high speed is going to eat up the ground.

Don't use tilex, use Kaboom.  Have you sealed that tile in the last 4-5 years?  sealing it helps prevent mold growth

Scrub pad and abrasive like baking soda takes it right off.

If you *really* felt bad, you'd do it for her.  :-*

orbital sander with a scotch brite green scrubby pad attached to it....you'll make short work of the scum....be careful though, as you might make short work of the shower stall too....

my wife found the perfect solution...it is called a housekeeper

seriously tho, you don't want your wife ruining her hands with that kind of work....

there is nothing attractive about being fondled by a pair of hands

that look like they could belong to your prison cellmate

If it is caused / made worse by hard water (usually is), try some lemi shine.  It's a dishwasher additive meant for hard water, works great at cleaning bathroom stuff too.  It's all natural, I believe it is just citric acid.

BTW a pair of gloves works well to protect hands.  ;)  But if you have the budget for a housekeeper that's a nice solution too.

I'll give you all a secret that I learned in college.

Snails.

Yep, snails.

You know what snails LOOOVE to eat?  Mildew and molds.  that's right.  They vacuum the stuff up like crazy.

If you have a bathroom with tile that is going black, pick up a slug or a snail and put him in on one of the grout tracks.  After a minute of "WTF?" he will start eating.

And he won't stop.

The really fun part is that they suck it all out and it doesn't grow back.

yes, they leave a trail but that washes away with water.

I am not kidding.  When I was in college, I used to go outside in the morning and pick up a slug and put him in the bath.  By the time I came home, he had done an entire wall of the bath.  The grout lines are like a choo-choo track for him.

Don't believe me?

A bonus?  this is the "greenest" way you could ever clean a bathroom, bar none.

There's a bottom feeder/thriving off scum/lawyer joke in there somewhere.

We have a large shower with "tumbled" marble tiles on the floor and walls and half of the shower is a glass wall and glass door. Well, it's not really a shower as much as it is a collection point for all things soap scum. [bang] It's a constant effort to keep it semi clean. I use Softscrub liquid gel, a two sided sponge with one side like a Scotch Brite pad the other side normal sponge and a stiff bristle brush about the size of my palm. I use the Scotch Brite-type side of the sponge on the interior glass wall and door and the brush and sponge on the tiles and grout. It's a pain and a constant maintenance issue. Maybe we should bathe less... or get a bucket of snails. [thumbsup]

clean it, dry it out for a few days and then seal it.  you would be surprised how different it behaves.

A small dehumidifier will do wonders for prevent spore growth. Less moisture = less growth = less work to keep it clean.

I don't how well they work on lawyers.

You're right there. [thumbsup] I need to reseal the shower, bath and kitchen counter tops for sure. It's been a few years. The guy who remodeled our house before we bought it had a mad on for tumbled marble tiles. [bang] Doing the showers and bath counter tops is one thing. Having that same shit for kitchen counter tops was a huge tactical error. :P Not the kind of surface you want to work off of in a kitchen. We have big glass and clear plastic cutting boards everywhere. I have nighmares of spilled spaghetti sauce and a permanent stain the size of the sink! If I ever do one mod to this house it would be to ditch the tile kitchen top and go with something (anything!!) else.

In the mean time I need to get off my ass, clean it all up and reseal.

Wagner Power Steamer On Cool Tools DIY Network (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HB26-v-ls8c#)

I remember seeing an infomercial on power steamers cleaning bathroom scum.  This isn't the exact same tool, but comparable.

Ha, you guys are great!
Yes, the wifey proposed a housecleaner/maid. I have huge trust issues, so that's a no go. I too counter-proposed with the pressure washer. Ain't nuthin' 3000psi from my pressure washer! No go either for her, especially after I pressure washed thru to the bone once (also was drunk--see a trend here...).

I like the other ideas as well, the other chemicals, the orbital sander w/ scotch-brite pad (this one I'm most interested in), various mollusks, and the attorney or two. I'll have to see about giving the orbital a go; it also is a great excuse to get another accessory for the cage.  ;D

I even tried explaining that slugs are homeless snails so we would be doing a good deed.

You'd rather eat snails who lived outside and ate whatever they could find?  Bear in mind, snails are omnivores but also coprophages.

my brother once caught two rainbow trout and put them in my Aunt's springhouse cistern.....fed them gobs of worms daily until they were monsters

he took one out after a few months and saute'd it in butter

guess what it tasted like?

sounds great, but i always try to avoid eating the stomach of any animal.  you never know what they last ate.

easy to do on a trout, you just pinch it out.  on a snail, not so much.

(i'm always reminded of the story my uncle told -- he was nypd harbor partrol in the 1950s.  they fished a mob victim out of the water -- in the bay, south of brooklyn...

he was filled with crabs... they pulled him up on deck with a boom because of the weights tied to him and when the body hit the deck, it broke open.. crabs ... everywhere...)

Meh.

My buddy Rod used to go out and catch a bunch of catfish, you know, the bottom-feeding, scum-eating, scavengers of the lake fishing world?

He'd bring home anything bigger than 15 but smaller than 25 lbs.

Then he'd put them in a horse trough with a water flow system that was on the north side of his house and let em go hungry for a week. By the time he pulled them out, killed them, and skinned them, all of the fat deposits and all of the nasty residual flavors were gone. It was all just pure, white, catfish filet meat.

Some of the best freshwater fish I've ever had.

That's the same thing one does to Carp.  They are horrible tasting unless you flush them out.  My grandma used to get a live carp and put it in the tub overnight.  in the morning the water would look like brown soup.

I just can't help but picture your poor mum walking into the bathroom the morning after your dad's been out fishing, half asleep, reaching for the shower controls, and then letting out a howl to wake the dead.
