Poll
Question: what do you think? call in air support? nuke-em? shoot 'em?
Option 1: follow them and pregnant dog-slap them when they get out of the car
Option 2: two words - spike strips
Option 3: sign them up to be biofuel-fuel
Option 4: nuke em!
Option 5: back to drivers ed, keep right, pass left!
Title: ROAD TURDS - slow drivers in the fast lane
Post by: eyeboy on June 19, 2008, 11:32:55 AM
i am amazed at how many drivers migrate immediately to the left lane and sit there like a big steel turd. what ever happened to etiquette? keep right except to pass?

i love the 'i'm going the speed limit' crowd as well. where i live, on the major highways there is always twice as many cars going SLOWER in the passing lane than there are going faster in the right lane. what's going on??

discuss.  [popcorn]

it's kinda crazy, i know!
when i have to drive on the highway, and there is one of these "turds" in the left lane, i get frustrated quickly, and just end up passing on the right... just like everyone else does!

RIGHT... it's the new left  [laugh]

Some states are starting to enforce the "slower traffic stay right" laws more strictly.

It doesn't bother me to much, cause here in NM, I don't think theres such thing the fast lane (or at least no one knows about it)

It just bugs me when a Semi does it and I'll just hang back a bit till I get a better time to pass..

you know what they say Left side's passing side, right side suicide..

in my car I'll be a bit more brave and flash the lights/ honk the horn till they get the f' over.

I absolutely dispise "road turds".  My thoughts are their thoughtless, uncourteous driving warrants the same to them.  I'll pass on the right and cut them off.

I know it's immature and wrong but I just get so pissed off when people don't move over!   >:(

Fortunately, I drive a slow, old car and usually just putt along in the right lane at the speed limit.   :P

Most states have laws that prohibit cruising in the passing lane, travelling slow in the passing lane, or failing to yield to an overtaking vehicle in the passing lane.  Unfortunatley they don't enforce them.  I know CA could solve their budgetary and traffic problems if they enforced those laws.

I was just stopped last weekend because of a jacka$$ in the left lane.

Minnesota has signs all over that state "Slower Traffic Keep Right"

I came up behind a left lane camper and instead of passing them on the right, i flashed my lights a few times and when she looked in their mirror with her hands in the air, I pointed to the right.  After that I backed off a bit and just waited her out... flashing every so often.

After about 2 miles of this, she finally moved over.  I passed her and gave her the same "hands in the air" look.

About 20 minutes down the road I got pulled over.  HP said I was called in for tailgating and threatening the other driver.  After explaining things, he let me go, and turned around just in time to see her going by flipping me off.  When I said that was the car I had flashed.  He told me if I caught up to her again, pass her legally and wave to her in the same way!  Thought that was pretty funny.

i think this has gotten worse with the rising gas prices.  so many trucks and suvs just crawling along with no consideration to people who made intelligent decisions when purchasing their last vehicle.

and you can not forget the people who think it is their job.. no... DUTY to police and pace traffic.

In Los Angeles the fast lane is the right lane. I often get off at exits, get back on the same exit and end up passing 50 or so cars.

Most are too busy on the phone. :-\

I know guys who drive next to me and try to take my lane right next to me. I dont know why they do this except maybe they are trying to proove that they are better? A lady in a 7 series newer BMW did that and ended up scratching her car up on my passenger peg. She was so dumb she claimed that she did not hit me. So i said, k. and left. of course she was also dumb enough to not  get out of the car and look at the damage.

As fro the slow people, i got dual Bixenon HID 4300k. Thats super mega bright white light x 2. thats 6x more light then halogens, I also have a stebel airhorn, no exahust, dry clutch. and my next mod is an emergency window breaker hammer head on the knuckle of my hand.

Not sure that that would help you out. Just imagine what would happen if every asshole on the cell phone suddenly drops their call. Now instead of them not paying attention to the road, they are not paying attention to the road AND trying to re dial the person they just lost...

In California it's even legal to pass on the right. [roll]
What especially annoys me is people who feel that they have to be in the carpool lane because they qualify, even when traffic in the other lanes is going  significantly faster than them.

In Germany, the drivers know how to drive, and stay right / pass left, is strictly followed.  No enforcement needed. [thumbsup]

Love the idea of school as a punishment for the left lane bandits.  Some are just rude.  For many of these folk loss of a day's work and possible humiliation at the workplace is a better punishment than a mail in fine.  For the others, maybe education will enlighten them.  The second ticket should be loss of license.

As far as I am concerned, clogging the left lane is a huge safety issue since this practice is a major cause of road rage.

Right is the new left !

I notice this trend myself.

I have weapon for left lane squatters and I am unapologetic and unrepentant in its usage.

My retro fit of a Ducati Designs headlight on my ST has given me a high beam that will sear retinas from 100 yards. I just sorta position myself to where the beam hits them in the mirrors. This trick is quite effective and more often than not they do move.

Before you get the idea that im one of those high beam flicking assholes, please note that I run high beams 100% of the time during daylight hours. I do turn them off at sundown. I'm a dick, not an ashole.

i get better 'getoutoftheway-age' with my hi-beam on... its on all the time in the daylight hours.

in europe i have noticed also it is very common for bikes to have a turn-signal flashing constantly during rush-hour commutes... some have (i want one) both signals going, like emergency flashers... anyone know how to make that happen?)

Last year a guy, in the left hand lane, was yacking on his cell phone going 60 in the 65 mph zone.
A cop followed him for 3 miles, then turned on his lights, it took the guy 1/2 a mile before he tilted his head back, while still talking on his phone, to see what was going on right behind him.....  That really made my day. ;D

we have a huge problem with terrible drivers in my city.  on the way to work in the mornings, i will come up behind someone doing 55-60 in a 70 in the left lane all the time.  and we have the "civilian cops" that will drive right next to someone at 5 below the speed limit with nowhere to pass.  i have passed people in the middle turn lane several times and as soon as i do that, they will speed up and/or stop driving right next to someone.  our local cops like to drive in the left lane at 5-10 under the limit and nobody will ever pass them, but i will be brave enough to pass at the speed limit and just keep pulling away like they are a normal car.

but we also have lots of people that will ride right on my bumper when im doing well over the speed limit in the right lane and not know how to go to the left to pass me.  i have had it happen several times, im doing about 80, and some d-bag gets behind me in the right lane and keeps getting closer.  i will eventually slow down and just wait to see what they do.  i have gone as slow as 30 in a 50 because someone was on my bumper and they wouldnt go around me.  but then again, anytime someone gets too close to my rear bumper i will always slow down,  they think it will make me move faster but it doesnt, and then when they finally back off, i will come back up to speed and they get close again, and i slow down....  over and over and over.

just a side note, i drive with a trailer alot and in all honesty, it is easier for me to stay in the left lane and just keep going 5mph over the limit than it is to move over every chance i get.  i have moved over before and as soon as i catch the next car, the person im about to move in front of will speed up to keep me from getting in front of them.  if im holding up any traffic i will get out of the way, but most times im going faster than just about everyone.

this is also applicable to the boneheads who drive in the HOV lane at the stated speed limit or below while the rest of traffic blazes on by.  WTF!  I'm not paying my tax dollars to sponsor moronicus maximus to drive like my mother would in a clearly designated "Nyah nyah nyah nyah" lane when they could be doing the same thing, 1 rpm from stalling out, in the right hand lane (where they belong!)!  I got enough people in my ride to qualify for mach 3 mutha trucka... Carpool/HOV lane should not be moving slower than the other lanes!  But more often than not I see a tour bus cruising along at 5mph below the limit... and in some areas here, you cant exit the carpool lane for a good stretch of road.  That means you're stuck behind a bus while everyones passing you in the "slower" lanes. ARghh!!

I only use the left lane for passing.... then as soon as I'm clear, back to the right.  I don't even have a problem with someone camping in the left lane, as long as they are not holding up anyone else.

Don't tell me I'm guilty of doing it, till you ride with me.

Oh, and as for the 90 in town and 65 outside of town, it's just the opposite for me.   Heavy traffic in town=10 over (65).  Light traffic outside of town=15 over (90).

Of course, up to 10 over in ND will get you a $20 ticket, and 11-15 over will get you a $40 ticket... neither of which will go on your record.  ;D

There are really only two kinds of drivers: maniacs and morons.

"Maniacs" consists of everyone going faster than me. "Morons" consists of everyone going slower than me. There are more and more morons these days. I almost miss the maniacs. Around here, the left lane is always oncoming traffic so I have no particular desire to ride in it.

Last week I followed some woman practically the entire way from my house to the hospital. At no point did she go over 30mph, and that was where the speed limit was 50 - normally, going slower than 60 there will result in rear bumper damage. Up the hill, she was going so slowly my speedometer wouldn't register. I was in the roadster and slipping my clutch like mad in first to avoid going backward. Perhaps she was hypermiling; I don't care. I just wanted her to go ahead and die because she'd probably start moving faster.

I was praying she was a new patient so I could see her half an hour late then, when she complained, say I'd been caught behind some slow woman and couldn't get to the office in time but, alas, it was not to be.

Rules for an intelligent argument:

1) If one is to appear intelligent, punctuation is a good place to start.
2) Reread your written position before firing off your reply. Keyboard rage does not make you appear intelligent.

What especially annoys me is people who feel that they have to be in the carpool lane because they qualify, even when traffic in the other lanes is going  significantly faster than them.

This drives me insane! Especially the hybrid car drivers who are there just because they have the fancy little stickers on their bumpers. F'ers.

In Europe, the drivers know how to drive, and stay right / pass left, is strictly followed.  No enforcement needed. [thumbsup]

Fixed!  Well, with the obvious exception of the UK and Ireland.  But, you use the left lane, except to pass, over there.  Getting about on the roadways is so much easier over there, and I dearly miss it.

well I made this statement with the idea of cars in mind...driving....not riding......                                                                                                  when people drive their cars they just go to the left lane its just the way the water flows in the city and evan tho you my know this is wrong you my find your self getting behind some one to move them out of the way they dont move and for the most part bam their you are driving in the left lane.......mad because they dont get over....your still their in the left lane.. add that times..20 million=traffic..................................................................                                                                                                                                         I wrote this last night just to get people fired up...but next time you get in your car check it out we all fall for this some time                                               and again ment this loosely not that you or he/she is the one............but you know who you are out their

Driving is pretty good in the UK and Ireland.  But I wouldn't praise all of Europe.  Italy is a notable exception. :-\

i've driven to and through many countries in europe and once you're on the highways, everyone pretty much follows the left is the fast lane rule. at least from what i've seen. highways don't seem like such a free for all.

have a nice day

driving a backwards standard car, on the wrong side of wicked narrow roads didn't come naturally for me  [laugh]

Yea, you are right on that regard.  I lived in Europe for almost eight years before work brought me to Hawaii, and Italy is definitely one exception to that rule.  But, just everywhere else is much more organized.  Hell, I even had one guy follow me into the A1 services, in Cambs, and apologize for not being able to move back into the left lane sooner.

But for the utmost in entertainment, you should try driving an up-armored HMMWV through Kosovo.   [bang]

first time i was in scotland i hired a car... i was worried that driving and shifting on the wrong side would be tricky, but i didn't have any real problems aside from one particular traffic circle... lol

loved the wicked narrow roads... and in italy you also get wicked narrow italian drivers!!

That just makes it more fun! [evil] [cheeky]

On a related note, I have to say I'm more comfortable with roundabouts going clockwise (UK direction) than counter-clockwise (US direction).  Although I was thoroughly confused with the "magic" roundabout when I ran into it. ???

Yea, that one is a touch tricky.  The one that surrounds the Arc de Triomphe is another doozy!

Yeah that's when I found out that the French yield to cars entering the circle as opposed to the US where the people in the circle have the right of way.  I pissed off a lot of people.

Yessir!  I'm glad that I was in a rental the first two times I drove through there.  ;)
