Title: My Monster 900 project begins! Post by: BellissiMoto on November 27, 2011, 07:13:29 PM [bacon]
So I picked up a decently equipped, but in slightly rough shape Monster 900 recently and have been contemplating what to do with her. This is how she arrived - (http://ugc.ducati.kontain.com/photo/20111106/prod_890d4b62-804d-49ed-af44-4c9b2b53140f/tb_1920x1080.jpg) The photograph is misleading though, as the frame and tank are actually spray paint jobs that leave much to be desired. Also she is sporting two leaks, one at the clutch slave (no big deal - gonna swap it out anyhow), and another at one of the case seals, so we'll be stripping her down completely to tune, clean, and re-seal the motor up. After a couple hours, she looked like this - (http://ugc.ducati.kontain.com/photo/20111118/prod_dafd162f-b5c3-4665-bdc0-4be006f1a27a/tb_1920x1080.jpg) After another few minutes, she was completely in the buff - (http://bellissimoto.com/sitebuilder/images/IMAG0586c-600x362.jpg) Title: Re: My Monster 900 project begins! Post by: BellissiMoto on November 27, 2011, 07:16:40 PM What happens next is up for discussion...
I'm tempted to simply re-do the yellow correctly, but also considering blacking it out and adding some special color features in small quantity... All I know is the "plan" is to keep this as a budget(-ish) build. Title: Re: My Monster 900 project begins! Post by: koko64 on November 27, 2011, 08:00:34 PM [popcorn]
Great back to basics build? Title: Re: My Monster 900 project begins! Post by: BellissiMoto on November 28, 2011, 02:37:22 PM [popcorn] Great back to basics build? Honestly I don't know. We tore her down the rest of the way today though, so I'll have to make up my mind soon! [drink] [drink] [drink] Title: Re: My Monster 900 project begins! Is that a custom seat...its not on the Corbin site? Title: Re: My Monster 900 project begins! Post by: Travman on November 29, 2011, 08:40:37 AM Why don't you try a color that you have never seen on a Monster before. I think this bronze color from this Guzzi might work on the tank. The frame could match or be black.

Title: Re: My Monster 900 project begins! Post by: muskrat on November 29, 2011, 04:59:42 PM I'd say bronze on the frame and the tank in matte black with bronze highlights or design.......now we are moving.
Title: Re: My Monster 900 project begins! Post by: ducatigirl100 on November 29, 2011, 05:25:25 PM yeap bronze is nice... it would really stand out in a "classic or cafe racer look " ....don't put carbon on that !!! [thumbsup] . I might stole this idea .. ;D I intend to overhaul mine next year... [Dolph]

I think this bronze color from this Guzzi might work on the tank. The frame could match or be black. bronze front fender (whit stripes) valves covers bronze to... bronze weel's ( not actually in bronze because you would loose some performance.. ;D [cheeky] ) "ducati meccanica" logo on the side of the gas tank high mount exhaust ...is it possible to have them in bronze to ??? all the rest in black [Dolph] Title: Re: My Monster 900 project begins! Post by: koko64 on November 29, 2011, 09:40:26 PM I reckon super light weight, minimalist. Galluzzi's original concept, tank, wheels, motor. Go for moderate engine mods, say 90 hp, and a good power to weight ratio. You can use lots of carbon and other light weight materials to get 140-150 lbs.
Title: Re: My Monster 900 project begins! Post by: brad black on November 29, 2011, 11:36:37 PM Go for moderate engine mods, say 90 hp. nothing moderate about that. Title: Re: My Monster 900 project begins! Post by: zooom on November 30, 2011, 04:08:41 AM ....don't put carbon on that !!! Ooooooo...make it the Anti Carbon bike....no CF !!! Title: Re: My Monster 900 project begins! Post by: koko64 on November 30, 2011, 04:27:11 AM Its a 900ie isnt it?
Title: Re: My Monster 900 project begins! Post by: Travman on November 30, 2011, 11:17:40 AM Here is another bike that I'd use for inspiration. Mainly I dig the seat tail section, modified tank, color selection, and the black rimmed spoke wheels
(http://i292.photobucket.com/albums/mm21/JonTravisKing/Misc/BrownFrame1.jpg?t=1322679812) http://www.youtube.com/user/pimpmycb#p/a/u/0/kMTE2giaYIQ (http://www.youtube.com/user/pimpmycb#p/a/u/0/kMTE2giaYIQ) http://www.youtube.com/user/pimpmycb#p/a/u/1/ldQ5bggOr-k (http://www.youtube.com/user/pimpmycb#p/a/u/1/ldQ5bggOr-k) Since you mentioned it is a budget project. The rims on that bike are from a Sport Classic 1000. I recently saw a set for $500 with rotors and mildly used tires. If your budget grows then go for the tubeless Alpina spoked rims. If you don't want to go with spoked rims then find some black 999 rims. The 3 spoke rims on there right now are too common. I would also try the fork gaitors Duck-Stew used on one of his bikes. (http://i292.photobucket.com/albums/mm21/JonTravisKing/Misc/DirtTrackSpecial7.jpg?t=1322679912) Also, borrow his hidden oil cooler idea. Or at the very least paint it gloss black like the Hypermotards. (http://i292.photobucket.com/albums/mm21/JonTravisKing/Misc/DirtTrackSpecial6.jpg?t=1322679912) Then paint or powdercoat black the following: Swingarm, rear hoop, stock rearsets and possibly the triples. Ceramic coat the entire exhaust black or silver. The current one looks too rough. Lose the rear hugger and possibly the headlight fairing. Another easy & inexpensive mod is to change the color of the front end with vinyl wrap like this. (http://i292.photobucket.com/albums/mm21/JonTravisKing/Ducati%202005%20Monster%201000s/20110104_M1000_11.jpg) Title: Re: My Monster 900 project begins! Post by: RAT900 on November 30, 2011, 12:32:34 PM Sell me the seat and then I will tell you what needs to be done with the bike ;D

What is the tell tale sign?Title: Re: My Monster 900 project begins! Post by: koko64 on November 30, 2011, 05:40:15 PM The ie oil cooler, throttle body spool, non adjustable forks, swing arm, coil pos-n, fuel cap, etc. But I had to look twice as its the last iteration of the 888 based chassis.
Title: Re: My Monster 900 project begins! Post by: Grappa on December 01, 2011, 10:59:09 AM I've always thought it a bit of a shame to have one of the classic styled Monsters and have a black frame. The trellis frame is so beautiful, and such a big mark of the brand, that I always prefer it to stand out more. Paint it red, or even a light gray. Or something else, just not black. Just my two bits.

I've gotta say thanks for the input, pictures, and ideas so far. It's about time for powdercoat now though, and after tossing around several ideas (ranging from blacked out, fiber optic lighting along the frame (tron-esque), Red (all sorts of reds), retro-bronze/copper, Chameleon, etc...), We've pretty much narrowed it down to 3 general ideas: 1. Yellow Frame, Yellow Tank, Blacked out motor, triples, swingarm, wheels, etc... 2. Yellow Frame and Tank, Blacked out motor, triples, Bright Blue wheels. 3. Monster S4R (04) inspired Dark Blue frame, with Dark Blue tank and White racing stripe, White Wheels, blacked out motor, swingarm, triples, etc... What do you guys think? Title: Re: My Monster 900 project begins! Post by: thought on December 05, 2011, 10:28:59 PM Out of all of those choice, I think the blue would be best... but what about a baby blue with a white frame? Something a bit different than the normal colors.
Title: Re: My Monster 900 project begins! Post by: lazylightnin717 on December 06, 2011, 02:23:26 AM I'm in for the dark blue color scheme. I've always loved the blue s4r.

I'm leaning this way as well... I'd love to have a yellow Duc, but this one is more of complete picture in my head - solving many problems quickly and easily... Title: Re: My Monster 900 project begins! Post by: BellissiMoto on December 07, 2011, 07:49:41 AM #2 if I had to choose from those choices only... Nothing is set in stone yet, if you have a neat idea, by all means tell us [beer] Title: Re: My Monster 900 project begins! Post by: zooom on December 07, 2011, 08:52:29 AM Green....doesn't have to be anything slick, it can be a semi matte darker green in the vein but not directly aimed at British racing green with a white frame and dark motor and wheels and your hardware accents in red...
another idea....maybe pay homage to the flag of Bologna in terms of color scheme (http://images.vector-images.com/110/bologna_prov_fl.gif) a nice white frame with a blue tank and put the insignia lion holding the "Liberta" banner on the tank and do a subtle pinstripe set of the italian colors on black wheels.... Title: Re: My Monster 900 project begins! Post by: Le Pirate on December 17, 2011, 07:01:48 AM just curious....
what kind of exhaust is that? looks pretty awesome. that bronze color on the guzzi tank would make for an awesome monster. I'm thinking steampunk ducati [thumbsup] Title: Re: My Monster 900 project begins! Post by: muskrat on December 17, 2011, 02:37:09 PM if you're going to do the frame blue do it in a deep metallic blue but contrast that with a dark sheen color for tank and such. Personally I think a deep copper color frame with blacked out parts would be awesome.

I'll have a real update with pics for you guys on both projects pretty soon. :) Title: Re: My Monster 900 project begins! Post by: lazylightnin717 on January 02, 2012, 04:52:03 PM **cough**

I'm also working on a 99 M900. Currently waiting for carburetor and clutch parts before putting her back together. Title: Re: My Monster 900 project begins! Post by: muskrat on January 04, 2012, 05:17:08 PM How do building custom and budget fit in the same sentence? ;D
Title: Re: My Monster 900 project begins! Post by: BellissiMoto on January 12, 2012, 02:05:38 PM How do building custom and budget fit in the same sentence? ;D Not very easily... (especially if you've seen the stuff on our website!), but I'm trying none the less, and have settled on a Yellow frame, black swingarm/triples/motor, titanium-ish ceramic coat on the exhaust, yellow tank and bodywork, etc... Everything is off at the powdercoaters now, painter starts in about 2 weeks, and the bike should be finished in about a month. Ohh and the custom ST4 should be done in about a month as well. Title: Re: My Monster 900 project begins! Post by: BellissiMoto on April 05, 2012, 09:15:01 AM Well after everything we decided to keep it somewhat simple and went with yellow powdercoat on the frame and a blacked out motor, triples, swingarm, etc...

Cut them a bit of slack...they are usually juggling multiple builds, fielding a metric F$*K ton of phone calls, directing german porn quality photo shoots and trying to make time to actually ride a bit...
