Title: OLYMPICS!
Post by: El Matador on August 08, 2008, 09:03:07 PM
Soooo, who's watching? I thought the lighting was cool, but nothing special. It doesn't hold a candle (pun completely intended) to the '92 Barcelona Olympics.

As for the games, I'm pretty stoked about rowing :)

42 Billion doesn't make a good show apparently.

Impressive technology wise but I am so bored  :-\  And I am a theater going person.

My wife and I were getting a it ticked off at them too!

"This team isn't going to win any medals."

WTF?!  STFU!!   >:(

The one guy said that about a few of the smaller countries.  Then the other commentator said something to try and offset the negativity.

Was an incredible display but rather longggg!

Corey also has a love of old cars, in particular Jeeps and Mustangs. In her free time, Corey enjoys riding motorcycles, rock climbing, and downhill skiing.

Motorcycles, Jeeps, guns and Italian cooking?!   [thumbsup]

I was stoked to see that!  Fencing is my fav - practiced in college and still have some of the gear.  Really amazing seeing how 10 years ago the thought of America taking a sweep in any Fencing category was basically fantasy.

Everyone seems to talk a lot of smack about badminton. I think they will respect the game more when a Shuttlecock is hit at you at over 200 mph  ;D

I sense a joke coming on about a Shuttlecock  ;D

Its not your casual game at a family Picnic. Its a extremely athletic sport. I can think of other so called sports in the Olympics where you can be completely out of shape but yet still win.

When there was a possibility of the Olympics coming to New York I was not happy.  I figured I would have to leave town for the duration.

Just think about what 54 billion could do.

16 is the minimum age.  I think China got confused and thought it was the max age.  The girl they just showed that they said was 16 looks like she is 12 at the most.

I just watched the US women's gymnastics team.

Shawn Johnson and Nastia Liukin seem like they might do pretty good, not too sure for the rest of the team. Yes. I watch the women's gymnastics...and yes....they are all way too young looking to find attractive. 16 year old girls who look like they're 12 (or in the case of china, 12 year old girls who look like they are 8  [laugh])

Watched some swiming too...Phelps kicked some ass yesterday, and then held back a bit earlier today when I watched.

Watched a little badminton too!  [laugh] Thats all I have to say about that one

The high school I was working at up in Seattle had a badminton team.

Ok, I watched some of the girls.  They look like they're 8.

Even I can't ignore that, especially when the announcers are discussing how they don't look 16 and people are complaining about that, but the Chinese have coughed up ID's for all these girls stating they're legal competition age.

Uh huh.

Riiiiiigght.

Women's diving though, now that's what I'm talkin' about.

As for medals, China is going to win the most and probably the most golds.

Also, that kinesio tape on KW works miracles!  I had it on my left shoulder (pulled a muscle) and it sped up my recovery time in no time.

Yeah..what a let down on that event.  That first guy just laid down on the horse.  Raj didn't do crap for difficulty but the Russian-Amer guy did great under the pressure.  They still got a medal but it should've been silver!!

Really I could care less about the Olympics(except Basketball), but this article about Yao is awesome..... I really respect him so the fact that the author is heaping praises as well may color my view.  ;)

BTW, I used to enjoy the games when they were all played on a four year cycle and it was truely an amatuer competion. Now you have games every two years and they expect me to make as big of a deal out of it.... it's not. And the purity of purpose has been diluted. It used to be athletes that wanted to go had to forego the money grab till after they won their gold, making it very clear what a persons priorities were, and their desire to be the best.

when exactly was that? i mean, the US wasn't sending pros, but other countries were sending athletes that were raised and cared for by their government to be their official representatives. how was that viewed as amateur?

???

Well, a large majority of the atheletes are still amatuers and they are participating in sports that aren't mainstream.  I enjoy the olympics and I feel all the atheletes are there to win, not to get paid.

And don't you think it is funny that you dislike the Olympics for your stated reasons except for the basketball portion.   :-\  There are NO amateurs playing for the gold in basketball.

Alicia looks more like Jessica Simpson's sister than her real sister.  Yes, very hot!   [thumbsup]  A little powerhouse.  Too bad she's f'ed up for life now after messing up pretty bad..twice!!   :-\

BTW..hearing stories like that men's beach volleyball player is why I like the olympics.  That guy came from a broken family, worked to support his alcholic mother and siblings while in high school, quit high school and then became a beach volleyball player.  Not all of the athletes grew up with silver spoons and training from a young age.    :)

You have a storm around that area or the wind blowing??  The only bad thing about direct tv.  It goes out with bad weather.  I always have something on Tivo to watch though for backup.

True..regular volleyball just isn't the same.   :'(

There were some showers/storms in the area.  Usually doesn't affect it too bad, but there must have been a thunderhead directly in line or something.  It is back on now.  I'm at my folks house right now.  I have cable back at school, and I, by far, prefer DirecTV over our cable service.  The cable equipment is crap as is the channel selection.

Olympic Like/Dislike breakdown:

Like, Want, Moar:
Pageantry.  The shitloads of Pageantry.
The scale.  If the Olympics are not pure or controversy-free, it is at least huge.  It may be a colossal waste of energy to build stadiums in a new city every four years, but I kinda like the moon shot kind of human ingenuity.  Because it'll be cool, that's why.
The US pwning the water like a squad of U-Boats
Women's beach volleyball players looking like athletes, not models.
Other Beach volleyball players not looking like the US team.
Bela Karolyi.  I wish he could do color commentary on every event.

Do not want:
Commercials.  Normally there is nothing to like about them, but NBCs lineup of fall shows looks more stupid than usual - there is no amount of advertising that will make me watch The Flimsiest Premise starring Christian Slater.  Also, my local news affiliate is waging some kind of good will offensive - they insist on really, really, really caring about me an my city.  Ignoring for a moment the arrogance of assuming that you "make a difference" by reading reports of car accidents and stabbings from a teleprompter, I very much doubt anyone gives fraction of a shit.  Enough with the leg humping.
Michael Phelps interviews.  Bless his waterlogged head.  The way he chews his words, he sounds like a less-articulate, accent-free Schwarzenegger.
More beach volleyball.  I would rather watch an obscure, even boring event one time, than beach volleyball every night.
Prepubescent Chinese Gymnasts.

The men's 4 x 100m relay should be awesome, but I doubt the US will be able to beat Jamaica.

But the US will win the 4 x 400m by a ridiculous margin.

We currently have women's wrestling.

I'm fairly certain that most of these women have penises.

And Rulon Gardner as a commentator?

He sounds borderline mentally handicapped.

And getting lucky as all make the beast with two backsing hell against a far superior opponent and then killing time qualifies as a resume for sportscasting??

Yeah he is a extremely Lucky person =)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rulon_Gardner

Rulon Gardner has had an amazing streak of luck with survival. While in grammar school, Rulon was impaled by an arrow in a show-and-tell incident. In 2002, Gardner was stranded on a wilderness snowmobile trip and had to have a toe amputated after suffering frostbite. In 2004, he was hit by a car while riding his motorcycle. In February 2007, Gardner and two others crashed a Cirrus SR-22 airplane into Lake Powell. After surviving the impact, they were forced to swim in 44 °F water for over an hour. The three survived overnight without shelter or fire in 28 °F air temperature. His amazing luck streak continued when a fisherman, out of his usual route, found and picked them up in the morning.[2]

Bolt just wanted to win, when he wants to break the WR, he'll do it with ease.  I see a WR of 9.5's or even a 9.4 if he got a GREAT start and shoe's get better.

..maybe they'll even stay tied:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/olympics/2008/08/16/bolt.100gold.ap/index.html

Why didn't he try to do better?

"I didn't come here to run the world record, because I was the world record holder. I came here to win," Bolt said.

He did it with one of his shoes untied: When Bolt crossed the finish line his left shoelace was flapping.

Turns out his friends are Tibetan. They are going to great lengths to protest china, even to not watch the Olympics when hte point of it is global unity.

This is why gymnastics is one my least favorite Olympic Sports.

I like the sports that take less humans interpretation on who wins.  Did Phelps touch the wall first etc.

that's the whole point of the new scoring. you start with a start value based on difficulty + a 10.0 execution score and then deduct for penalties.

the only "human interpretation" should be "was that a deduction or not?"

obviously, that's not how it went down, but i'd hope that it gets more consistent with all the events between now and the next olympics.

I deffinetly think it does lower the amount of subjectivity of the judges, but it seems to lower the need for perfect execution which I think is crap.

It seems that in this olymipics doing a hard routine just "OK" is better than doing an "OK" routine perfect.

Rules are Rules but what does that say about the person complaining.  Your better than me and younger than me but I want your medal stripped because rules are rules.

Personally I would suck it up and say I lost to a younger better athlete.

They will not find out that the girl is under 16.  China will fake documents and do whatever they can to hide it if she is under age.  Even if she is underage, it is still pretty impressive.

the tie break thing is a load of crap.  I think they should have handed out 2 medals.

Also that baseball game was a shit show!  I wish a brawl eruped, that would have been awsome.  After that d-bag hit the home run for China the US pitcher should have popped the next batter.  Show boating during a 9-1 loss is pretty lame.

the best (most experienced) judges are from countries that have strong gymnastics programs. in an effort to remove national bias, they don't allow judges from the finalists' countries.

Yep.  The scoring system is the worst thing they could have done.  It sucks donkey balls.

And the boxers know the score for the most part, too.  So if one has a decent lead, in the final round, they just run around to avoid getting hit.  [puke]

The officiating and rules suck.  It is like nerf boxing.  I watched a lightweight prelim and there were like four standing eight counts, for what I assume to be the four successfully landed punches.  You OK?  Do you want to talk about it?
