Title: DIY V2
Post by: DRKWNG on May 07, 2008, 10:44:11 PM
Ok guys, the last DIY at my place worked out pretty well.  Got the exhaust cored, the beers consumed and the music listened to.  Now I propose we get another one together and on the calendar.  I know that R-lo wants to core his pipes, but I have a new project as well.  I bought some header wrap and I want to wrap up the exhaust (or at least the tail end of it) on the Daytona.  Any takers?  ;)

Machts gut!!  Wunderbar!

Anyway, now that I have come back to my senses and remembered that I am not in der Fatterland: I am open, but most likely a Saturday would be best.

That's right, he doesn't have many tools does he?

I could possibly bring the dremel (after I replace the part that we burned up).  Who else has a hack saw?

You might want to wrap that pipe when it's cold. Just a suggestion.

Oh I know.  But just figure this, it took us about two-three hours to core my cans, I figure all we need is a few more beers in the process to make sure my pipe is cold by the time we start wrapping it.  ;)

What mods did you have in mind Ben?  In one of the posts somewhere I thought you said something about flush mount turn signals.  Wrap the pipe too?  Let me know & I will bring stainless wire & safety wire pliers.

Dang it ...... Actually everyone of these threads is a "say anything" thread. You wackos.

Title: Re: DIY V2
Post by: DRKWNG on May 21, 2008, 12:53:01 PM
For me it will pretty much be installing the flush mount flashers (which I intend to pick up from the post office today) and wrap the header/exhaust.  R-Lo had said something about wanting to core his pipes too, but haven't heard anything back from him lately.  Other than that, I wanted to open the door and see if anyone wanted to try and do some work on their bikes too.

Were you going to be bringing the stuff from your house or shop?

Or do you speak of someone else?  Someone who rides the baconmonster by chance?

That would be a pretty intensive mod, and I am not sure if we could pull it off at my garage, but I am ready and willing to pitch in.  Dare we beg Mac to volunteer his shop?  ;)

Title: Re: DIY V2
Post by: teddy037.2 on May 21, 2008, 10:35:55 PM
my original thought was to do the install at the same time I do my rear, but I still need to order one.

prolly going w/the penske... I seriously doubt I would know the difference in feel an ohlins unit would offer.

The house. Why?

Just curious.  I was going to say that we could meet at the shop if you had all your stuff there, but never mind.

I got the turn signals along with a another (a spare I guess) carbon tank pad and another set (also a spare?) of paddock stand bobbins in the mail today.  Need to see if I got double charged for the spare parts...

I don't think Ohlins vs. Penske, etc. is so much about feel but rather range of adjustment.

The only advantage my shop could offer on the front forks is that I have a nice crane that could hold up the front of the bike as opposed to putting some sort of stand under the engine. I definitely have the rear shock swap out thing down. Between my monster and some other friends I've done about seven remove & reinstall/replace jobs. The crane works great for that.

as for the rear, I'm sure anything will be better than the stockie... meh, we'll see. I gotta start shoppin'

Your house, the shop... it's all the same to me except I'd prefer one project at a time in the shop. It's more manageable that way.

That's cool.  I am sure I could manage the indicators on my own down there while also being able to lend a hand on Teddy's forks.  But I guess the best part about doing it at my house is the fact that there is beer in the fridge, and also the proximity of HideAway for an after mod run.  ;)

Question about the forks. Will they fit into the triple clamps or will those have to be changed as well?

they're the monster showas, should fit right up. I just need to drill my axle for access to some adjuster thingy on the bottom.

I think Tristan was going to do a brekky run on Saturday, but Mac wasn't going to be able to make it.  Thought we might get max participation if we modded saturday afternoon, then went for the ride Sunday morning...  But then what about Monday?

I thought the glorious day of infamy, of the great sit & roast, was 4th of July or Labor Day.  Shoots, I'll have to look in the archives of TOB or go back through digital photos for the date. The very first DML ride, such as it was.

Ok, time to get this back on track again.  Teddy has suspension work to be done.  I still want to wrap my header.  I'm sure there is at least some other person that has some other thing (legal and moral please) that they want to do.  So, when shall we do it?  Well, I invited Mac over to my place this Saturday to watch the prologue stage of the Tour and he suggested that we do the wrap that day.  Anyone feel like bringing over an engine lift so we can do Teddy's bike at the same time?  ;)

It be morning now.... I only had 2 1/2 glasses of Marzen at Gordon Biersch last night. That's not enough to really get me but it was the lack of proper food and a high stress afternoon that must have put me over the edge. Not a drunk edge actually but a pissed and irritable edge. Try to live with hiccups that last for hours and you'll see. I ended up going to sleep with them last night. When I woke up today they were gone... until I stood up and then they were right back.

I digress, sorry.

Teddy -- you are welcome to bring your parts down to my shop, the new shop on Kawaiahao St.. Then come by with the bike on a Saturday and we'll hoist it up and get it done. Just a suggestion. The shop makes it so much easier.

So it is prologue and header wrap tomorrow, or work at the shop?

Title: Re: DIY V2
Post by: MadDuck on July 04, 2008, 12:55:07 PM
My first guess is that it's the prologue and wrap deal.  Unless Teddy has figured out how get the bike and the parts down to the shop at the same time. One plan was to drop the parts off separately ahead of time and then get together on a Sat.  If he could work out something where someone else drove down in a car with the parts and he came on the bike that would work too.

Nevermind, I found it. The other day you were saying it had a stock clutch cover and pressure plate. It sure doesn't look like that in the picture.  Looks like polished or chromed cover with open vents & a big hole in the side so you can watch a deep dark blue pressure plate spin.

Well, I went down and talked to Shawn after work on Friday; gave him an idea of what he was up against.  Let's just put it this way, the bike I am looking at has the full Termi/DP kit on it and will go for below MSRP after it is shipped down here.  But, I just have to sell off one, if not both, of my current bikes to get it and that is something I am not all that motivated to do.

See, I understand that too.  A point of view that would validate the situation that both of us are in would be that, in a sense, we have the best of both worlds. Each of us has a large displacement air cooled Ducati that is a bad boy hooligan in each of their own ways.  [thumbsup]  Then we have screaming and reliable sportbikes for all those other moments.  [evil] Could an 848 do dual duty? Maybe, maybe not. After getting stuck on the Pali Sunday afternoon I was sure glad I was on the Monster.  [moto]

We can start about 9 or 10 if you want. You bring the SC. I'll bring the 240D. That way if we don't finish for some reason I can give you a ride home and we'll finish up on Sat. How's that? I'm not taking the 848 in on Friday as Will is doing warranty work on outer islands. Phooey!

I haven't looked inside the front axle box for a while so besides the axle and the end nut did you get all the spacers and washers that go along with the axle when fitting a wheel?

Title: Re: DIY V2
Post by: DRKWNG on July 01, 2009, 10:56:03 PM
There was one small washer that came with the lock nut, but that is the only one that I saw. What other spacers would be needed? Did you take a look at the wheel itself? Did it look like it had the right spacers?

Title: Re: DIY V2

The wheel has spacers. I guess we'll see if everything is the right set up. All the parts I have are at the shop now.

The biggest and most important pieces did but the small pieces needed to do the job didn't. Boo!  I'm still going down to the shop tomorrow with the bike to do some shop work and maybe check out some things on the bike but I don't think the main work can be done yet. Made some Mark I tube holders tonight out of a 2x4 using a radial arm saw. They'll work fine & I can always make Mark II's later. Come on down in the late morning for a look see and maybe a test ride.  [thumbsup]

if those wheels are the same axle dia as your bike, that's a good start.

I have heard that the steel swingarm will have clearance issues when going to a wider rear, and the al arms are made for it...

Title: Re: DIY V2
Post by: Xerxes1769 on December 10, 2009, 05:00:40 PM
So the problem would be the tire and not the rim?  The wheel will have the same axle diameter (i believe...)...could I just buy a smaller tire say a 170 (would that even fit)?

Title: Re: DIY V2
Post by: eltristo on January 05, 2010, 05:48:59 PM
Possible caliper development:  There's a set of 05 620 calipers for sale with rotors - black brembo.  They'll fit, but are they drastically different than the goldlines?  Are they goldlines painted black?  If they are inferior, would I still be better off with two of those vice the one I've got?

Title: Re: DIY V2
Post by: DRKWNG on January 05, 2010, 10:32:37 PM
I believe the black ones are the same that I have laying around from the SC, also the same calipers that came stock on the S2R800.  If that is the case then they are no where near as nice and I would hold off until you could get your hands on the actual 4p2p calipers, like Teddy has.

Title: Re: DIY V2

Yeah, that's what the left side is, but finding a used right side caliper has proven quite unlikely over the years.

Title: Re: DIY V2
Post by: DRKWNG on January 07, 2010, 05:25:26 AM
Hey question (I know I can search but I'm lazy)...what's the best number of teeth to go up/down when replacing the sprockets?

Are you planning on doing front or rear?  If front, I would not go anything more than one down, if at all.  There are lots of folks of the thought that altering the number of teeth on the front can throw off the crankshaft balance and make your motor go all wonky.  As far as rear goes, you could get close to the same effect as going -1 on the front by going +3.  The one possible complication with this is that you have to make sure you have enough chain length to support the change, assuming you are not replacing the chain at the same time.

Title: Re: DIY V2
Post by: teddy037.2 on January 07, 2010, 06:01:12 AM
there are probably an equal or greater number of folk who say 14t is the best mod ever.

so many have done it, that I imagine if it were bad, it'd be known by now

mike- R-Lo's had it on his 695, forever... you could ask him about it

Title: Re: DIY V2
Post by: DRKWNG on January 07, 2010, 06:14:33 AM
Hell, I've got a 14t on the SC.  Just saying that there are quite a few people (people that know a thing or two about engines) that will warn against it.

Title: Re: DIY V2
Post by: MadDuck on January 07, 2010, 06:25:32 AM
The deal with the 14T counter sprocket has not so much to deal with engine balance as it does with tightening up the turning radius for the chain. Some folks believe that a 520 or 525 chain shouldn't have to bend that tightly. I'm one of those folks. Since the sprocket is on a transmission output shaft it will in no way affect any crankshaft balance. I prefer going up 2 or 3 teeth on the rear sprocket ,and yes, a longer chain may need to be installed to make that work. That said, lots of folks run the 14 tooth front sprocket with zero problems. My friend Wally has a 14 front and a 42 (?) on the rear of his Monster 900. Definitely lost some top end and the engine buzzes more on the freeway but he can pull the front end up at will and hold it there.  [evil]

The oil cooler will help to a degree (pun intended) but may not be as significant as you might think. Ask Teddy. He put one in his 620 a few years ago. In stop and go traffic you might only notice a 5* cooler difference or so, if that. I think I remember Teddy saying that it helped but didn't make as big a difference as he was hoping for.  Of course it works better at speed but the whole air cooled engine is working better at speed as well.

And yes, Teddy, I thought about the oil filter bypass piece too as soon as I didn't see it in the first picture but if you click on one of the thumbnails it shows up.

Title: Re: DIY V2
Post by: Xerxes1769 on January 19, 2010, 09:53:30 AM
My "plan" is to get the engine painted (block...whatever else is not flat black) and while the engine is out probably get the frame/wheels powdercoated and see about getting the exhaust done (ceramic...)...now from what I gather from the responses this might not be something I want to tackle myself...so than the question is who does that around here and any ideas on prices?

Title: Re: DIY V2
Post by: DRKWNG on January 19, 2010, 09:57:32 AM
I imagine you would be looking at spending a pretty good amount.  You have to account for the time required to strip the bike down, store all the parts (this would take up a good amount of space) while the paint work is being done and cured, then the time to put the bike back together again.  I might be way off with this, but I guess you'd be looking at spending at least two grand, including labor, paint and storage fees?

Yeah with the money I've dumped in parts/labor I could have traded in the bike and gotten a newer/bigger bike but where's the fun in that...

My point exactly. Spend all the cash personalizing to only realize that you still want more of a particular thing the bike can't give you. In my case it's more of a comfortable back, and not being able to foresee getting blown up while deployed.
