hello folks,
my friend's little chihuahua has been in labor almost 12hrs. i've been reading up on the web but we've never had this experience before so we're both very nervous and anxious.
she's a tiny little thing and she's all restless and panting. we think she'll have it within the next 12hrs.
the only things is, i don't know what a contraction should feel like. she seems to shiver sometimes but i don't really feel anything coming from the belly area. she let out one big yelp at one point that sounded painful. i'm sure she's fine but just to confirm, i WILL know when she's about to give birth...right? and are the contractions something i will obviously know?
here's a pic (not pregnant)

Call your vet or one that's open at night.
Find out what the Vet will cost first.
Are there any problems associated with that breed during puppy birth? Check into it. If not..you can handle it!!
If so, I'd go to the Emerency Vet.
Dogs have been giving birth without human intervention for a few years now
might be the best thing you can do is stay hands off

[laugh] you think you are being funny
two fires ago
initial attack crew came out a window with thier "rescue"
and rushed over to rehab
I forget what I was doing but I got tapped on the shoulder to head to rehab and help with the "victim"
When I got over there three guys were working furiously on an unresponsive Malmut(sp?)
it now resides with one of our Lt's

If it's "your" vet, most won't charge you for a question or two over the phone. Mine sometimes doesn't even charge me for a visit.

Thanks
but
I had nothing to do with it
I was in shock, I rushed over to help and then
my brain locked up...saying "really?...
Really?"
and I just watched them work on this dog
I thought it was sad and hopeless and then the little dewd started breathing on his own
He was out of it for a few days since it was a grow house
little dewd was high as kite for a couple days
hehehe...well the humor has certainly eased my mind a bit [laugh]
All females are born with the whole birth giving scenario in their head. THey know what to do, otherwise we'd all be dead. She will pant and breathe heavily and possibly roll around a bunch of times and try to walk. All you need to do is make sure there is a good nesting area for her to bring her children and lots of water and food nearby because she will not leave sight of her young for a few weeks. Other than that, just sit back and let nature take its course.
holy crap...one black puppy just popped out!!!
[beer]
pics fro my phone to follow

Great, more chihuahuas. Just what the world needs.
And did she crap out a golf ball in that pic??
here's the 1st one...we think there's one more in her

hey folks,
so my friend's dog , "peabody", gave birth early this morning to a healthy, tiny little puupy boy... [thumbsup]
she gave birth within 45 mins of me starting this thread last night. Dave and i were both a bit worried that she wasn't able to push out the pup. it was going on 12hrs and she had all the signs but nothing was coming out.
i posted up and a few people gave a bit of advice, best one coming from "mother" who said let nature take it's course and a bit of humor added in. then suddenely i heard a little wimper and i walked over and saw blood, then i noticed the little thing was halfway out. Peabody was exhausted and wasn't pushing anymore, so dave gently helped the pup out. she plopped out and peabody immediately started eating the sack and chewed the cord right off. unbelievable!!!
we thought there might be another one in there but alas, it's an only child. pea is only 6lbs and the father (a yorkie) is only 4lbs.

Glad the pup seems OK.
So did you purposefully breed you Chi with a Yorkie?
Awww, cute baby puppy. Glad everything went okay for the mom.
I'm curious how the pup will look when it gets bigger. That's an interesting combo.

yes, dave bred the two on purpose. he tried the last time she was in heat but i guess the little sperms didn't make it.
this new breed is called a chorkie :P
not a fan of these names of the mixed breeds but she sure is cute.

Well, I'll refrain from a rant on the purposeful creation of mutts, and the current state of affairs of our animal shelter system (i.e. there are over 200,000 dogs needing adoption).
Your buddy should get his dog spayed...she'll live a longer and healthier life because of it. Same goes with the Yorkie getting neutered. Please don't breed "Chorkies" for money.
Anyway...I'll butt out now...glad the pup & mom are doing well. :)

I should do, as to do otherwise will most likely get me a PM from Nate. Suffice it to say, that the breeding of mongrels is not good for anyone. Please stop. It is irresponsible, plain and simple. A "chorkie" is NOT a breed, it is a mutt. Period. Because you think it might be cute, is no reason to bring pups into the world; it is stupid and selfish.
I'm not done, but I will stop. I'll make my wife (who is a saint) listen to the rest of my rant...or maybe I'll decide to return Triple J's Dremel and rant at him... [laugh]

i appreciate your concern TJ...but money is not the intention of dave. he's the biggest animal lover you can meet as well as i. he'll end up staying here or with the father. he and i (seperately) have rescued a few animals in the past. i agree with spaying/neutering. i haven't talked to him about it yet but i was going to ask him about it.
thanks

It is irresponsible. Don't do it. In this case, you are mixing two high prey-drive dogs. Recipe for problems? Maybe. You say your friend is an 'animal lover'? Doesn't sound like it.

hey sinister, i'm not going to make a habit out of this. i have no interest in breeding anything...well except for maybe breeding my own children one day ;)
i meant that i've just recently heard about this cross breeding thing, not that i'm just "getting" into it.
well, he IS an animal lover and i don't believe he had any bad intentions when he did it. i'll have to defend him as he's not here to defend himself... :)
anyways, sorry to ruffle any feathers...
peace
