Sorry I missed this thread earlier.  When working with the side stand I insert washers all the way down the spring while the stand is down.  When you put the stand up the spring is unable to compress so you can just lift it off.  Reverse the procedure to reinstall.  Made life simple for me, had to do it a couple of times on my other bike before I got the stand to the right length.  If you're really rich use quarters.

 Good suggestion! I just made a small spring puller to do mine, after years of vicegrips.
