When vets are down on their luck in Bakersfield, they know to toss a sick or injured animal (any species will do) in close proximity to Saint BP.  They'll know he'll take them in for some fixing up!

I wouldn't let him "hang out" in it. I'd put it outside next to the real grass. Then I'd wait for the whine at the door to go outside (assuming he already does that) and take him to the pool setup. Then just move it a bit closer over a few days until it's inside or wherever you are planning to keep it.

Pics were moments after I got the sod and mulch down.  Took him in it, he ate some grass, sniffed around and laid down.   How could I resist pictures?!   

He's definitely out now and won't be taken outside to do his business.  Just walking him into it now and I know eventually he'll go.  Will also pick up some scented stuff Somegirl pointed me in the direction of to entice him.

I have never seen a littler box for dogs. You could patent the idea, I know a lot of apartment dogs that would like that.

If you pee on it he will know what its for.

I had an extra piece of sod outside, so I had him pee on that a couple times last night.

Swapped it out with a piece in the pool/doggie litter box this morning, and bingo - he's using it!

I'm looking for some dog training advice, and where else would I turn but to Dogs of the DMF?

Here's the issue: In the past three or four months, our two dogs have gotten in the habit of waking us up three or more times a night begging to go out. It started with Fluffy, our 7-year old female Husky/Shepherd/Whatever mix developing a urinary tract infection that meant she HAD to go frequently, but after two weeks of antibiotics & rechecking a couple of times she's got a clean bill of health and should be able to go the night without going outside.

I'm pretty sure the pattern goes like this: Fluffy wakes up, she's bored and wants company, so she goes and wakes up Ruffles, the 15-year old male Shar-Pei who's mostly blind, mostly deaf and counts peeing on things as one of his greatest remaining pleasures in life. That, and killing the skunks that occasionally get into the back yard at night (last Saturday was the first in a long while, and the memory lingers on both dogs despite multiple washings). Once he's awake, he'll start barking & scratching at the bedroom door & won't let up until one of us gets up & lets them out.

We've got to find a way to break the pattern with one of the dogs; unfortunately a dog door isn't an option because of the indoor-only cats who've never had to deal with the neighborhood coyotes & because Fluffy's a big girl and any door big enough for her to go out is more than big enough for an ill-intentioned human to come in.

Any ideas?

I was informed prior to my own variation, that there are indeed indoor "litter boxes" for dogs available online.  The few that I saw required the dog to step up onto it.  Not a big step by any means but our vet put the fear in us that Brian is not to take any step whatsoever during his recovery.  So my McGuyver gene kicked in!
