sorry to hear about alex, jud :(

hugs to you and tiffers

Thanks to you both.

I have been doing some thinking about possibly issues as to why Alex had gotten worse. I talked to some family members who are both MD's and Vet's.

Alex was initially diagnosed with a fungal lung infection. However, the test came back negative, but it was noted that the test is not that accurate at times due to the nature of the fungus. X-Rays of his lungs showed lots of black spots which led them to believe it was the fungus in there. Prior the results of the tests, they put him on some anti fungal med to get rid of it.

So the Vet rules it asthma / allergies for some reason and put him on a Pretnazone which is a steroid medication.

well.......that would speed a fungal infection into a god damn atomic bomb.

Why put him on that when you have an in accurate test?

I have a call scheduled with the Vet in the morning to discuss.

disclaimer: this is no way an expert opinion or autopsy result. Just some thoughts of family in the area of medicine.

God I hope this isn't the case, but we'll never know but does make sense.

Sorry for your loss Judd.

And speaking from the experience of having buried most of my family.....

there's some things there's just no good make the beast with two backsing reason for. It's best just to let it go-the answers are never satisfying. YMMV.
If the state had not cut funding for the mental institutions, this project could never have happened.

I know, I know.

I am just one of those people's that always wants an answer. It is a part of how I operate. Every thing that happens needs an answer why. I mostly likely have some sort of issue, but whatever, we all know I am probably not the most sane out there.

I guess it comes down to in this case is some closure. I want to know why Alex isn't sleeping on Tiffer's leg right and Greta next to me, but Greta is now comforting Mommie by laying on her.

Dogs are such amazing family members.

A few years ago our daughter and dog were staying with us.  The dog was a ...ummm...dunno, looked like Toto on steroids and incredibly strong.  One morning my wife took him for a walk.  He decided to chase a cat, forgetting he was attached to my wife by leash. My wife got pretty beat up from the fall, enough for a trip to the ER.  When we got back from the ER my wife was angry with the dog.  He came up to the bedroom later offering my wife a dog biscuit that he took from a box in a closed closet.  My wife refused the gift.  He tucked the biscuit under the mattress.

The same dog was playing with a ball.  The ball landed in his water dish.  Of course, when he tried to grab it it sunk, preventing retrieval.  He looked at it for a second or two, then drank enough water so the ball was no longer floating, retrieved the ball and went on his merry way.

Complex emotion and complex problem solving.  No wonder we become so attached to them.

You keep saying that...I don't think you're listening though.

Anger is pretty normal when related to a death.

Try to not take yours out on bystanders...

be they innocent or otherwise.

I am not going to yell or berate the Vet.

I just want to chat with him about his diagnosis of my animal which appeared to be incorrect.

Spoke with the Vet yesterday afternoon and we had a nice conversation.

We use Banfield located in a local Petsmart.

Our Vet is actually the owner of the clinic and an Ohio State Vet Grad, so he didn't go to a bootleg school.

He was very sympathetic and actually a bit shocked to hear the news.

Before calling me, he said he reviewed all of Alex's records for the past two years.

When we took him in for the issue, they took several X-rays of his heart and lungs, which (at the time I did not know, but know now), they got sent to a special Radiologist at Ohio State for reading. So my Vet and that Vet concluded over all the symptoms and tests it was Asthma.

So his only likely conclusion (outside an autopsy which is too late to be done nor something I would have had done to my little buddy) is Alex had a severe Asthma attack.

He suggested Stress as a possibility due to being in the kennel........but Alex was never stressful while there or ever once showed a symptom of it. He actually loved going to the kennel. He would get his only 5x5 stall. They have these little cots he would get, we'd put his doggy bed on top, then a few fleece blankets. He loved it. He of course had his favorite little quackers (a stuffed duck) with him. I'd even put towels on the floor so when he got up, his feet wouldn't get cold.

No way was it a stress induced attack.

Well, so that is that. We finally put away all his belongings in a special box last night.

Valentines Day 2009, we got both our dogs actual paw prints inked on our left wrists (ink pad + dog paw + placing paw on white paper = pain in the ass!!!).

We are going this weekend to speak with our Ink guy to brain storm some ideas of how to close out the tattoo as a tribute to our fallen friend.

Carry on with all the beautiful dogs...........

We are not done with them. We will get another one. Just not right away. Time needs to heal from having lost Alex.

Greta seems to be doing well. She is sad, you can definitely tell, but she is doing well.

wow man.

sorry to hear about your little buddy. thats pretty sad :(

well, to attempt to change the direction of the thread, it snowed (again) the other morning, and shiba dogs love them some snow.

Wife and I decided last night that Greta needs a playmate.

We are going to get another four legged friend in August (We are going to Germany for 2wks in July, so timing right now doesn't work with a puppy as young age is pivotal in the development and I don't want the new pup to live 2wks in a kennel during developmental stage).

We are going to get Greta a little boy Doberman.

We've been looking at Hoytt Doberman's for a while and decided on that. They are a bit pricey, but a great history of breeding and beautiful dogs.

We are going to get her a brother.

we just can't, at this time, get another little dog.
