Is this the prototype that Dr. Ferry drove around?

Carrera is in for service, so I am in a Cayenne S for a couple days.

I like the Cayman a lot.  Always been a big fan of the mid-engine.

Not a huge difference in power to weight ratio, and I think the Cayman handles just a little better.

If there comes a time to replace the Carrera, it will probably be with a Cayman.

Panamera pics released....

Ok, this part is cool:

"The 'S' model will deliver 400 hp from a 4.8-liter V8, and the Turbo variant will offer an estimated 500 horses."

This part is not cool:

"The entry-level powerplant will be Volkswagen's 3.6-liter six-cylinder engine with 300 horsepower."  "According to Edmunds, the base car will come with a sticker price of $127,000."

A VW-powered Porsche with a base price of $127k, featuring a measly 300hp?  What the hell are they smokin' in Weissach?   [laugh]

Wow, didn't see that part. But look at it this way, why is their turbo 4.8 V8 putting out only 500hp when Nissan's GTR is putting out 480 (claimed, magazine tests have shown more) out of their turbo 3.8 V6? Granted, the Nissan is a twin turbo, but come on. This is Porshe we're talking about...

You won't be paying 127 for a VW powered Porsche.  It will be considerably lower than that. Probably start around 60 or so and go up from there.  The Porsche is a twin turbo also.  If the horsepower figures don't impress you then start comparing torque.  I haven't compared the two myself but would expect a huge difference.

http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/coupes/112_0803_2009_nissan_gt_r_dyno_test/index.html

Here are 3 dyno pulls
"430.6 hp @ 6700 rpm & 425.3 lb-ft @ 3900 rpm
425.8 hp @ 6000 rpm & 433.1 lb-ft @ 3800 rpm
435.8 hp @ 6800 rpm & 439.1 lb-ft @ 3900 rpm"

Here's what they estimate drivetrain losses equal:

                                                                              Crankshaft horsepower assuming
Weather corrected dyno figures  15% loss  20% loss  25% loss
Horsepower                             430.6                        506.6       538.3       574.1
Torque                                    425.3                        500.4       531.6       567.1

Explanation:

"A new study has found that German sports car maker Porsche earns an incredible average of $28,000 in profit on every vehicle it sells. The figure â€" printed in Germany's Welt am Sonntag newspaper, citing a study by B&D Forecast â€" dwarfs the per-car earnings of virtually any other automaker.
Comparatively, luxury and sports car maker BMW makes about $3,200 per car. Audi nets a less impressive $1,580, and Chrysler and Volkswagen earn just $900 and $400, respectively."

I'm not so sure about that.  Here's what they say on the Edmunds.com website:

"Prices in Europe are expected to start at around $125,000 for the Panamera V6, ranging up to $195,000 for the Panamera Turbo. Sticker prices on the U.S. models could be slightly lower when it goes on sale in late 2009."

If this info is correct, the 500hp Turbo model is priced at double the MSRP of a CLS63 AMG.  That's just crazy.
