Forgive me if this has been addressed before. I went to check out a 696 and inquired about the 7500 miles service. The dealer said other Monsters previously required service every 6K miles, but now it's at 7500 miles. He also said the maintenence usually runs around $500 and comparable Japanese bikes run around $350 (dealer cost). I just wanted to check if this sounded accurate.

I realize owning a Duc will require more money for maintenance and I'm willing to pay it. I just wanted to prepare myself now before I take the plunge.

The dealer was prepin' a red one and said it could be mine if I wanted it. Unfortunately, I can't ride for another month due to an accident, so I didn't want to buy it and have it just sit there. :'( My thoughtful friends all offered to keep it running for me until I recover. :)

the maintenance has been pushed out to 7500k. while the cost will most likely be more than a UJM, the actual number seems to vary greatly. some dealers are sticking it to their customers pretty hard.

others are not...

7,500 Service is going for about $375 at my dealer in NY. I got quoted $240 for the 600 mile service. I like to work on my bike and can't justify spending $240 for an oil change and chain check. Might do it myself and need to figure out how to get rid of the wrench maintenance reminder.

Wow...  I'm glad I do all my work.  I don't have a wrench reminder though, my bike's too old.  It's not terribly difficult to check the valves & change the belts.  Most other things are easily learned ~

that valve adjustment price is around what you should be paying , it might be less or more by 100 or so dollars butnot much different, they are probably charging you something like 3.5-4 hours labor at 90$ hour, then maybe 1 or 2 shims that are adjusted at 10-20$ per shim and then oil and filter and crush washer are costing you the remaining 50-70 dollars.  so its around what most ducati dealers charge.

now if he estimated it was going to cost around 800 or more then that would sound a little too high.

I normally do most of the work on my vehicles... but my dealer had a service plan for $1500.  3 year unlimited miles, includes 1 battery, 1 set of tires (equivalent price of stock tires) and to top it off I do a lot of miles.  Bought my M696 in mid july and it already has 7k on it.  so I will be getting my money out of that plan.  My dealer it is $400 for a 7500mile tune, but that does not include parts/oil; only labor.

Thanks, everyone! It is interesting to see the prices do vary. Looks like NY has the best price. Lucky you! [thumbsup]

But this isn't going to stop me from getting the bike. If I'm not willing to pay, then I shouldn't get one. I'll check if they have a service package here, too. I haven't checked out other dealers in the SF bay area yet. I should probably slow down a bit since it'll be a month before I can ride again. Good time to check out other dealers.

Anyone have any fav dealers out this way? I only checked Munroe Motors in SF.

that 1500 dollar 3 year unlimited mileage thing is a great deal, if like you said you actually ride the bike, for people that put on 9-10k miles a year that will more than pay for itslef after the 3rd service in labor.

Yeah, I read here in Colorado that the average motorcycle owner puts 3k miles on a bike a year (granted I think a lot of owners own multiple bikes).

Simple thing about DUC 2 valvers. They can be seen on extreme ends of the maintenance ladder.

1) They are ducati's which means shorter intervals. For the normal "Joe the Motorcyle Onwer" who doesnt do squat for maintenance on their motorcycle, owning a ducati is an expensive yet enjoyable proposition. This is why you see so many ducati's for sale w/ 6k -7k miles on them. They ride em till the maintenance kicks in.

2) BUT on the opposite end, you have "Joe the grease monkey mechanic". For this person, owning a 2V ducati is a no brainer. Think about it, this technology was invented in the friggin 60's. How complex could it be? Fact is, its not at all. This is no lie. I have 16k on my S2R and I've paid a total of about 100 bucks for actual maintenance. If you include the splurge to get EMS ducati collets, then its 250. I expect to have this bike for at least 50k. If you consider ducati related maintenance (valve adjustments, timing belts) as the only difference between a jap bike and a monster, all other maintenance costs being equal (clutch, brake pads, oil changes, etc). I'm only dishing out another 200 bucks. Over the long run, i'm easily making that up from the lower amount of depreciation when I sell the bike.

Bottom line, ducati's are a mechanics DREAM. Their's always 2 sides to each coin.

Holding breath here.  Just dropped 09 696 Monster for 7500 service. Quoted $425/$450.  TOLD to bring it in COLD, day before or trailer that morning.  We rode it in yesterday.   Next, told 5 hour wait likely, so will pick it up at end of today or in morning.
Will see how happy I am then.  In Central FL, we have now only 2 choices for the service:  Ocala/Melillimoto with EXCEPTIONAL reputation/qualifications, 110 miles round trip-to be done TWICE for drop off, now pick up.  Or Daytona HD dealership-no more comments.  Similar distance, never bothered to get a quote.   Of course, I could drive the 4 hours to Miami also  [roll]  The last on the list shut down last month-previously Cycle Riders, Ride Now purchased and now closed!!  let them do my 600 service since so simple. They were only maybe 25 miles round trip and could wait for it on this service.  They LOST one of my brand new custom valve stem covers however. Replaced after many emails n weeks however.

Will update when we get my Beastie Boy back.

I've dealt with Sebastian several times, if he actually does the work himself you will be very happy with him.
