Jeez, July 11th??  I was ready to head out to the Apple store today!  Still not that impressed after seeing the specs.  I was really hoping for a better camera and at least 32 gigs.  16 gigs can't replace my ipod, which was the only reason I was going to buy an iphone.

They could do better.  I'll sit here and watch my apple stock fall for the next month I guess.

I was a little surprised that there was no 32 gb one either.  We actually got a donation of Apple stock at work today.  I'm curious if the guy did it in conjuntion with the WWDC or if it was just a coincidence.

I'm disappointed that I'm going to have to wait until at least the 11th to get one.  I say "at least" cuz I don't plan on camping out in line so I'm sure I won't get one on the actual 11th.

What are everyone's thoughts on it being plastic and not metal?  I think it's a good way to reduce weight but OTOH I've heard a lot of stories about people dropping theirs so it makes me worry a bit.

It has the same 'GPS' that every cell phone has, guessing location based on cel towers.  I don't think you could cram a real sat-based GPS into a cell phone yet and not have it bulk up considerably.

Try this out to see an example:

http://www.themobiletracker.com/english/index.html

Having spent 3.5 years testing the "guessing" GPS system for several companies, I would have to say that as an example, 1 call out of 1700 calls while made testing Nextel in Indianapolis locking in at a fix greater than 1 meter margin of error versus my in car GPS seems a little bit better than guessing.

This is off topic and I apologize, but phase 2 E911 uses actual satellite fixes and not triangulation associated with anticipated GPS coordinates. And every phone that is compliant(every phone on the market per federal regulations by 2008) is GPS capable. The software interface with the GPS is where some phones shine over phones that have no user interface with the GPS.

I have to say that with some free software and an upgrade to the OS from 5 to 6, I am very happy with the GPS functionality of my Motorola Q.
But I also had alot of fun playing with a friend's IPhone...

just to clarify.  Z's reply is in response to specs that were outdated with today's revision.  The 3g iphone is A-GPS. (Assisted GPS: real gps + cell tower triangulation).

From what I understand, no.  That's the price, straight up.  Apple will probably make a killing on their 30% rake on the sale of the third party apps, that's where they are planing on making the bulk of the $$.  By having a lower hardware price, Apple can get the 3g iphone into more people's hands and those people are going to be buying 3rd party apps and content from itunes(which is almost pure profit for apple)

Anyone think there's a chance a 32 gig model will come out in a few months?  I know apple likes to keep things fresh, and if I bought a 16 gig on 7/11 I'd be really pissed if a 32 gig came out a month later.

Wolverine

From what I've read around the Internet, a 32Gb version should come out later this year, around Nov. or Dec., right on time for Christmas.
But, again, nothing's for sure yet...  :-\

actually, yes, 2 year contract for the 3g at 199.
furthermore, they now require that you sign the contract before purchase thereby negating the possibility of using it on another network; i.e., though it will probably still be technically possible to crack the firmware, if you've already signed the contract, there's not much motive.
