Whey are these on ebay for more than $500 (16g version)

Some have BIN's for $600+  :o

AT&T store sells them for $499

What am I missing?

People are charging ~$100 to crack and activate them - which is a rort 'cause it takes less than 10 minutes to do... I guess if you're not confident about getting a newly bought one working on some non-AT&T network yourself it _might_ be worth that sort of money to you (and the fact that some of them do sell at those prices means it is for some people... That or they're all just stupid - which is a somewhat more likely explanation ;) ) Remember the $499 Apples charges is _really_ "$499 for the phone then $70 per month for 2 years to AT&T"

Does that still apply if my employer is covering the cost of the phone?

The 16GB version is increasingly difficult to find. I think production has stopped on both versions and the 8GB is the only one they had signifigant stocks of.

And yes, there is to be a new version at a rumoured AT&T subsidized price. Look for it in June or July.

It sucks because the keyboard on it is impossible to use at a respectable speed. Its main feature that i like is the large screen and direct youtube/google earth capability. Does it have GPS?
But yes, if i cant type as fast as a blackberry, or sidekick it sucks. i think i could beat myself with an oldschool predictive text phone.

It has the same 'GPS' that every cell phone has, guessing location based on cel towers.  I don't think you could cram a real sat-based GPS into a cell phone yet and not have it bulk up considerably.

I've got an IPAQ (windows CE based) phone with a built in GPS. It's slightly larger than a comparable crackberry.

My hope is Apple wll get their software / bluetooth support with the iPhone un-suckifed, maybe then it'd be able to support any one of the blue-tooth based GPS devices out there.

I own several motorcycles. I have owned lots of motorcycles. And have bolted and/or modified lots of crap to said motorcycles...

From what I've read they're cramming a gps in the 3g one coming out, I'll be getting one of those when it comes out to upgrade mine.
I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where I needed to be.

i have a full GPS on my cell phone. Its real time live tracking, down to 3 meters. When i dont get a fix on a GPS signal, it turns into the regular cell phone tower tracking. which is usually within 500 feet.
If the Iphone had a button keyboard, real GPS, then it would be one hell of a phone. Same goes true with sidekick. If they finnaly made a new one, (the LX doenst count, its just a high def screen) with GPS, a new homescreen with 3g AIM, it would be one sick phone.

my iphone works really well for me because i unlocked it myself and i have app's galore
if thay hadn't come out with an iphone
i'd be getting a nokia N95 8gb
no other smart phone comes close to browsing the internet as the iphone does (thats what i mostly use it for)
but there is no one cell phone for the world (thank god)
everyone has there own needs weather it be texting viewing E-mail's or browsing the web
and there are cell phone that meet those need better than others
and IMO the iphone is not worth 600 not even with all the free apps in the world
$155 at best  [thumbsup]
