i've got a pair of those too (outdoor research)

a fashion statement they are not...
they do work well on winter treks with hiking boots though  waytogo

I wear a pair when I go do snow removal at the command. That way I can just wear jeans, but not have to worry about the bottom half of my legs getting soaked and then freezing.
