Car Question: Install a Car Alarm with Starter Cut Off on a Carbed Motor?

I'd like to install a car alarm with starter cut-off/disabler, but my car is carbureted, not injected.  Do the starter disablers only work with fuelies, or can they work with carbed motors as well?  I would guess no, but I'm not sure.

Not really sure, But I don't see why not. Does it interface with the ECU or do you just splice it in to the wiring? Most Carbies don't have an ECU but I know of a few GMs from the 80's that did.

They actually had these electronic controlled carbs...Kind of silly. But those were just a flash in the pan one or two year thing.

What kind of vehicle?

If it interfaces with the ignition system, it might work, but like Dave mentioned, most anti-theft systems to work with the ECU on modern cars ~

Lots of carbed cars had an ecu

mostly mid to late 80's

GM, Ford, Jeep...ones I have actually seen

the ECU was/part of the ignition module and disabler/imobilizer should work just fine...in theory

That's the problem - no ECU.  And I assume (I don't know) that starter disablers need an ECU?

Most likely it will work, most simply use a contact point relay to interrupt the wire to the starter solenoid.  Got a wiring diagram?

I had an '85 Oldsmobile Toronado. Basically the test car for all the crazy shit they put on the Eldorado of those years.
Car had some nice features, especially its highly sought after computer controlled carb (CCC) system. Alot of guys are taking the 4-Barrel Rochesters off this car and putting them, and the computer controls as well.

It just so happens that i also tried putting a remote starter / keyless entry on this car as well.
It worked fine... Sorta.

The remote starter/keyless worked perfectly with the ignition system and everything. All the lights worked right, etc. etc...
Only problem is, it's a carbed car. An OLDER carbed car. You gotta pump that pedal a few times before you crank it, or else it just wont have the fuel in place for starting. It would crank and crank and crank... but never start. If it was after i had already started, and it would be like in a restaurant parking lot, i could start it up. That was nice. I would even get lucky in the mornings sometimes and would start on some leftover fumes or something in the carb...

so... YES, it will work with the ignition system.
and... MAYBE it will start.

Alot of remote starters can patch right into the ignition wiring under your column, no ECU needed. You just need to find your HOT ignition lead, and your STARTER lead, and patch the remote starter unit between them according to it's instructions. It will supply power to the starter via that connection when you tell it to.

I have over 20 years in the car electronics field and you can do a starter kill/cut off on a carbed vehicle. In fact, being carbed has nothing to do with a starter kill. Usually the starter kill circuit is done directly at the ignition harness. It's done there if the install tech is being lazy, or even worse he doesn't know what he's doing. I always spend the time to follow the harness from the ignition cylinder to where it is less likely to be found easily such as up near the firewall. I always solder the connection and tape it up to make it appear as if it's factory.

If the security system you're using has the starter kill circuit built in it's easy. If not, you can use a relay and get the same effect. The security system should have a wire labeled "ground when armed" or something similar and you can use that wire to trigger the relay and break the circuit from the wire coming from the ignition cylinder.

If you let me know what the make and model of the vehicle is I can get you the print out of the wires you will need including polarity and location of the wire if you plan on doing the install yourself. I also have access to wholesale pricing on all car electronics so if anyone needs anything just ask.

Now if we were talking about remote car starters, this would be a different conversation. I have done Remote start systems in carbed vehicles in the past and made them work rather well. The trick is a trunk pop actuator attached to the throttle linkage under the hood. There is a way to use it to effectively "pump" the accelerator before the vehicle remote starts. I had an 83 Z28 that was carbed and I did it to that vehicle.
