OK, so apparently the officer did not get back to her Monday night. In fact he just got back to her this evening and she saw us pull into the driveway after going to the store. She came up and told us that the officer told her what had happened. She was a bit upset that we didn't come talk to her, but after I explained my reasoning why, she understood. She said the kid was in the house crying his eyes out that he didn't do it. We asked her if she wanted to see the video, of course she said yes.
We invited her in and showed her the video and she said, yup, that's him. We talked for about 30 mins. I explained that I told the officer that I didn't want him charged or cited, but I wanted him to know that he could have been and just how serious trespassing and property damage is.  We also told her about him taking the sunglasses on the snowman (what he grabbed before he walked away) but that we didn't tell the officer he took them.

I told her how things were when I grew up and how my dad would have handled it. She told me not to worry, he was going to get it good.

I have no regrets on how I handled it and given the same situation again, I would do the same thing.
There are no hard feelings between her and us and she was very apologetic and said he would be over tomorrow to apologize to my daughter himself.

Do you ask Her what she does the 1-2 hours a day she is with her son?   

Your update is just evidence that you could have handled this by talking to her.

Well, maybe it was a bit of wishful thinking, but the mom has not come over. I expected her to do what I would have in this situation, drag his little ass over here and make him apologize. Maybe my standards and expectations are a little too high.  I personally would be thankful I didn't get a call from juvenile hall saying come pick him up if I was his mother...

I was with you earlier for a number of practical reasons but you've lost me now.  If you wanted to speak to the mom why call the cops?

You don't have the courtesy of talking to her first on the assumption that she'd just protect lil Billy and then you get all pissy because you again assumed she'd come over.   Maybe it's not Mom's behavior but your assumptions that need adjusting.

+1 sounds like your assumptions about Mom were unfounded as your update shows. 

Next time if you want someone to talk to you I suggest talking with them first as opposed to having your best friend talk to their best friend .....

I wanted the mom to come over, yes. But, as I have stated before, I feel the KID needed to be scared by the police for it to really sink in.

Also, the reason she isn't home much is because in addition to working, she goes to school as well...

is it really a good thing to intimidate a child with the police? I can't imagine that will build a healthy respect for either policemen or for property if he has the riot act read to him over a snowman. You can argue that it was the principle, but the cops did not show up over violating a principle (in the kid's mind), they showed up because he killed a snowman.

I totally got that you wanted to deal with vandalism, but to say you feel the kid NEEDED to be SCARED by the cops is disturbing.

Come on, disturbing? 

There is a difference between him not having a healthy respect for authority (police officers) because they give him shit about nothing, and the cop going over there and telling him in no uncertain terms that what he did was illegal and could result in his arrest.
