Highest HP Enduro (on a budget)?

I'm just curious if anyone knows what the highest horsepower, lightweight Enduro that's come out of Japan in the last few years is?

I'm toying with the idea of building my own lightweight, street-legal supermono and am looking for opinions on what's the best (also cheap) platform to base it on.

The hope is I can find a salvage titled one, and work up from there.

So... Any suggestions?

I don't think a thumper would be well suited for a super mono.  But if I were to make one out of a single I would go with a 2006 or newer Husky SMR450.  They are counter balanced, have a six speed tranny, weigh about 260 lbs, and put out 53 hp at the wheel.  Plus you would already have 17" wheels and street rubber.

If i had my choice it'd be the husky hands down

if you need it really cheap may look for a dr650
I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where I needed to be.

Did I mention cheap?  This kinda rules out the Husky...  ;D

Plus,  what would I build a supersingle out of if not a thumper?

Well you can find a late model in the $3-$4k range these days.  Yes the original super mono was a single but it had the balance of a twin.  One of those Aprilia sxv engines would be perfect.  Maybe you can find one of those on the used market.

Good question...

Total build price of around 5K. But starting at around 2-3K for the "Donor" bike and another 1K to get something in running shape. From there I'd be looking at spending another 1K or so to really finish it.

The Ducati SuperMono was named that because it is a single.  In other words - Super Single...  Mono... Get it? ;)

The idea behind the supermono was a very light sportbike that performed like a twin.  Riding a true single (not a converted twin with perfect primary balance) the way a supermono was intended to be ridden is a very different experience.  The single is running out of wind and vibrating like mad.  The little Aprilia twin would be the same weight and provide the performance characteristics of the original supermono.  Get it?   ;)

I realize the Aprilia will make more power and probably make a better all-around bike, but I really am looking for something with the true power delivery of a single.

Otherwise, why aren't we all riding inline fours?

I guess it all depends on what you like about the original.  The only way to really do it would be to lop a cylinder off a Ducati twin and add the dummy con rod.  If not you have to decide if it is about weight, smoothness, low end power delivery, or the frequency of a thumper.  The Ducati single was fairly short stroke for a thumper and the power delivery and smoothness would be on par with the SXV twin.  As far as the weight goes, either the SXV or the Husky single would be about the same.  Then there is the frequency which only the single will duplicate.

Why aren't we riding inline fours?  Because we have taste man!!   ;D
