FYI: Do new windows, insulation, and a fire stove help?

After buying a new home, I got R42 insulation in the attic, got all new windows (triple pane, high R and low U) and put in a wood insert in the downstairs fireplace (we got LOTS AND LOTS of wood)

Heating bill for the prior occupants last year ranged between 250 and 350 per month for the coldest months.  Our gas bill last month was $39, and we keep the thermostat at 72 day and night.

I think the biggest contributor was the wood stove.  That thing puts out heat like a locomotive, but the floors are noticeably warmer than before the windows were swapped.

Yes, wood stoves help a ton.  I don't have to ever use my heat pump and I have a very plentiful source of firewood.

Good windows and high R insulation are a great investment.  Just wish my apartment had those things.  I think this place bleeds warm air faster than the heater can produce it.

If you have a source of free wood you'd be nuts not to use it - if you don't mind the labor involved.
I love my woodburner - even if it's an antique and requires constant feeding and monitoring to adjust the temp. I'd love a newer one that isn't so labor intensive but it'd take 10 years to pay for itself.
I'd also love a source of cheap wood!
