I like to use passive solar to assist my heating/cooling.  Summer months have the blinds drawn when they sun on up, helping to keep the heat outside.  I then open them at night to let the cooler night air in and close them back in the morning.  I do just the opposite in the winter.  Blinds open to let the sun help warm the house, then close them once the sun goes down ~

All this talk of cold reminds me of sitting in my classroom...  My A/C unit is of the over-achieving type, the valdictorian of cooling if you will ~
